“New Trojans look to Honor those of Old” By Lena Clerici, Elizabeth Studebaker, and Kolton Bittner

"Change your opinions, keep to your principles; change your leaves, keep intact your roots.” -French Poet, Victor Hugo

It has been a decade since the last newspaper was distributed at North Catholic. In that time a great deal has changed at our school. As the newspaper editors and sta% writers prepared for our re#launch, another change became the topic of debate. The debate centered around the title of our newspaper. Homecoming Wrap-Up by Maggie Bartony & Brooke Horton

Homecoming was a memorable experience for all grades. The whole school can thank Miss Skirtich and Mr. Flecker for their hard work in planning this year’s homecoming! Freshman Katie Santamaria says, “I didn’t know what to expect, but I loved homecoming. I had so much fun and I cannot wait until next year. Homecoming was lit.” Mr. Flecker said, “students were not the only ones having fun, though.” Mr. Flecker brought his new bride, and the two also danced the night away. “My wife and I had a blast at homecoming. In our vows, we promised to have more fun than students at dances. Our mission was accomplished!” Everyone had a great time at homecoming.

Photography Club by Isabella Haberstock

The photography club was founded and is run by Ms. Bonsmann. Miss B has had interest in photography since she was in grade school. Now, she wants to spread her love for photography to the students here. Miss B’s main goals for the club are “for all members to grow creatively and technically as photographers though application” and move beyond the “selfie” to a more sophisticated technique. Miss B said she wants to teach students how to take a meaningful picture. She said that a meaningful picture is “capturing a specific moment naturally,” and pictures that are too staged are not genuine. She also said that candid photos have lots of personality and make you want to know the story behind the image. Ms. Bonsmann is very knowledgeable about photography, and she will make sure her students use the proper techniques to capture special moments for the school.

Art Club by Isabella Haberstock

The art club at CWNC is run by Mrs. Bucci along with Ms. DeNardo. Currently the art club is working on origami. They want to make the Thousand Cranes and hang them in the front entrance of the school. Mrs. Bucci wants the cranes to be a symbol of hope and peace that we can spread to others. Other activities for the club include making tie-dye shirts and fabric blankets for each member. She also wants to make paintings for the Seven Days of Creation and hang them up outside of the chapel. Mrs. Bucci will make sure the art club’s creativity and talent is shared

Christ Stefanick Reboot! by Lena Clerici

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” – Saint Augustine

Chris Stefanick is “one of the most engaging young defenders of the Christian faith on the scene today,” Archbishop Charles J. Chaput claims. On October 8, Chris Stefanick visited Saints John and Paul Parish in Sewickley.

During REBOOT LIVE, Stefanick discussed the question: “What Am I Worth?” Stefanick states, “My net worth is one Eucharist. God the Son to God the Father is my net worth.” He continues to say that our value is not defined by how much money we have, by relationships, by accomplishments, by our talents, or by our worst failure, but by something else. We are defined by the person whose love is so perfect. He came down and became one of us only that He would die to save us. He came and died, not for the whole world, but for each and every individual person who has and will ever live. We are defined by Christ Jesus.

Stafanick went on to explain that the same person who died for us, made us to be great. We may feel small compared to the physical world, but we are more than any mountain, ocean, or galaxy. “Can a mountain know someone? Can an ocean love? Can a galaxy change directions? But you can,” he claims. Most importantly, we were created in the image and likeness of God. “He had you in mind before the Big Bang. God had you in mind when He created space and time. He had you in mind when He entered space and time to save us. He had you in mind when He hung on the cross. He had you in mind when He rose from the dead.” Yes, compared to the physical world, we are tiny, “but spiritually, you’re kind of a big deal.”

These are just two of the many topics Chris Stefanick, founder of Real Life Catholic, touched upon during REBOOT LIVE.

November 2015 RELIGION 5

Reflection of the Month by Drew Linarelli

Pope Francis said, “These days there is a lot of poverty in the world, and that’s a scandal when we have so many riches and resources to give to everyone. We all have to think about how we can become a little poorer.” In this quote, Pope Francis explains that it is scandalous to have so many riches and not give any to the people in need. Pope Francis explains that we should think about a way to give to people and be unselfish and kind about doing so. There is a lot of poverty in today’s world. Even though we personally cannot make a major impact, we can still spread the love that God intended for all of us.

Interview with Father Levi Hartle by Kolton Bittner and Father Levi Hartle

Reverend Levi Hartle is Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s newest Chaplain, replacing Reverend Chris Donley who was moved to St. Raphael Parish in Pittsburgh. Father Levi first

thought seriously about the priesthood in 7th and 8th grade. After some prayer and conversations, he put it on the back burner until his senior year of high school. A few months into senior year, a friend asked Levi if he wanted to attend a retreat, and he agreed to go. While he was there, God spoke very clearly to him saying, “I am calling you to the priesthood.” After that, Levi attended Grove City College for music education, all the while knowing that he would eventually become a priest. During his senior year of college, God again directed Levi to the right people and got him in touch with the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Father Levi’s family was surprised that he was going to be a diocesan priest, since he grew up in a Capuchin parish, but they were always very supportive.

Five Questions with Father Levi: 1) What led you to priesthood?

“God made it clear to me that he wanted me to be his priest through the circumstances I described above.”

2) Did you have a backup plan if you didn’t enjoy priesthood?   “No.”

3) What were your family’s thoughts on your decision to become a priest?

“At first they were surprised, but they have been supportive and now love it.”

4) What are you most excited for this year at CWNCHS?

“Getting to know everyone and building a strong Catholic culture.”

Baskeball Preview by Brooke Horton

Basketball is a very popular sport at Cardinal Wuerl and has been for many years. Last year, the girls’ basketball team made it to the Elite 8 of the state in Class A championship tournament. It was the Trojanettes’ 40th consecutive season that the team has qualified for the WPIAL Playoffs, which is a continuing state record. Both the boys and girls teams have been attending open gyms and preparing for this upcoming season. Sophomore player John Fukon says, “We are gonna go out there and try our hardest and get the “W” every week. We will especially try to beat Vincentian and make it to Hershey.” This year will hopefully be successful and lead both teams to another post season opportunity.

Crew Team Prepares for Spring Season

by Rylee Kopchak

Although the crew season does not officially start until the spring, our CWNC team is busy preparing for this upcoming year. The team has recently begun practicing at Three Rivers Rowing in Pittsburgh. There, they will continue conditioning throughout the fall and winter inorder to get in shape for when racing begins. When asked about training; junior Jonathan Dunham states, “I believe it will be difficult starting out as a new member of the team. However, once I practice more and more, it will become easier and I will be ready for the spring season.” The team usually heads downtown in the vans after school in order to practice rowing on the river. Their practices usually consist of rowing a few miles as a team. If you are interested in joining the crew team, there is still time and anyone is welcome!

Girls Soccer Update by Maggie Bartony and Katie Santamaria

The girls soccer team has a record of 5-4-1, and the team still has four more games to play. These four games will determine whether or not the girls soccer team will advance to the playoffs. Their motto is “Commitment to excellence.” Head coach, Jon Miller, states, “The girls are committed to excellence and have been working very hard and we know that our hard work will pay off !” Junior captain Rachel Donlan expressed her excitement about the team saying, “The team has been working great together and we have become a family. No matter what happens I know that we will have each other’s backs!” The girls soccer team has had a great season and we hope that it will continue by making the playoffs. The best of luck to the team for the remainder of the season!

Crew Preview by Jess Kochik

The North Catholic crew team was established in 1991. Crew is a very fun and competitive water sport that, like all sports, requires commitment. There are a lot of crew scholarship opportunities; nearly 2 billion dollars in partial or full college scholarships are given out each year to rowers. If you are interested in joining the crew team, please contact Coach Sands by accessing the crew team page on Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s website.

On Sunday October 4th, the crew team competed in its first race of the fall season. The team competed in the Head of the Ohio Race in Pittsburgh Team, which was 3 miles long. A men’s four and a women’s four competed. The men’s four finished 8th place out of 9 teams racing. The women’s four finished 7th place out of 13 teams racing.

November 2015 SPORTS 8

Football Update by Drew Linarelli

This year our Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic Football team has come out of the gates at a rapid pace, leading the division with a winning record of 5-0. Under the coaching of former Steeler, Jason Gildon, the Trojans look to succeed in their goal of playing in the State Championship at Heinz Field. Sophomore standout, Seth Benson, said, “Our team has roasted everyone so far. The offense has been scoring points and the defense has been getting stops. To win football games you need more points than the other team.” Also, our sophomore superhero, Ryan Maziarz, who is currently leading the team with four interceptions stated, “Coach Gildon and his staff really have a firm grasp on the team.” The Trojan’s season started off with a big win against Riverside with a final score of 65-3. Mario Latronica came out of the game with 101 rushing yards in 17 carries with one touchdown. CWNC fan, John Fukon, said, “The games are great and bring our school closer together. I enjoy going to the games to watch the other teams get destroyed.” So far this year, our Trojans have been off to a great start and look to become even better as the season progresses.

Cross Country Season Wrap-Up by Rylee Kopchak

The 2015 cross country season has been one filled with excitement! Since the cross country team’s first race in early September, each runner has improved and they continue to work hard as the season comes to an end. One of its biggest accomplishments this year was hosting its first-ever home meet on the CWNC campus. The team has also attended several large invitationals, in which up to seventy teams attend. On October 3rd, the team ran at the Central Catholic Invitational at Schenley Park. The team did spectacular, with three girls and two boys receiving awards! Rylee Kopchak won the A-AA Girls race, with her teammates Brooke Carmazzi placing 25th, and Jessica Cannon placing 28th. In the A-AA Boys race, Joey Schmitzer was awarded 24th place and Chris Virostek finished in 29th place. Coach, Stacey Kopchak, is confident the team will finish out the season strong stating, “I look forward to WPIALs and believe that our runners will have a strong showing and put forth their best effort. They have been training since the beginning of July, and I know they are prepared to do well at their last race of the season!” The team looks forward to continue growing and welcoming new runners in the off season.

Golf Season Wrap-Up by Rylee Kopchak

One of the new fall sports available here at CWNC is golf. The team had an outstanding first season, finishing the year 5-8 (4-8 section play). Some of its season highlights included: winning their first match in program history against Valley, competing at the Speidel course in the Oglebay Invitation Tournament, and having five players qualify for the WPIAL Sectional Championship (Tre Bartony, Joe Alampi, Jake Miller, Adam Cruttenden, Shea McTighe). In addition, Tre Bartony qualified for the WPIAL Golf Championship at Allegheny Country Club. Coach Jonathan Hoffman reflects on the season stating, “Our first year was fun to say the least. Going in, we were unsure of what to expect from ourselves as a team and what the level of competition was in our section. As a coach, you always hope to see improvement in your players as the season goes along, and we did. We played a lot of golf this year in a very short period of time. The team did a great job every time we teed off for a match by supporting each other and always trying to beat a previous score.” Heading into next year, the team feels that it will only get better and continue to improve. Its goal is to add a few more team wins to its standard record, and make the WPIAL playoff for golf.

Cooking with Katies by Katie Santamaria and Katie Lynch

Pumpkin Spice Latte Cupcakes Ingredients: For the Cupcakes: • 1 spice cake mix (15.25 oz.)• 1 can of pumpkin puree (15 oz.)• 3 eggs• 1/3 cup of oil• 1/3 cup of brewed coffee, cooledFor the frosting: • 2 teaspoons of hot water• 2 teaspoons of instant coffee granules• 6 oz. of baking white chocolate squares, chopped• 1/4 cup of heavy cream• 1 cup of butter, softened• 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar• 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

Instructions: 1. Combine the cake mix, pumpkin, eggs, oil, and

coffee in a mixing bowl. Mix throughly. Spoon into 24 cupcake liners. Bake at 350 degrees for 18 minutes. Cool completely.

2. Stir the hot water and instant coffee until dissolved. Set aside. Heat the white chocolate and heavy cream until melted and smooth. Let cool for 5-10 minutes

3. Place the butter and coffee mixture into a bowl and beat for 1-2 minutes. Slowly pour in the melted chocolate mixture and mix until creamy. Slowly add the powdered sugar and cinnamon and beat until thick and fluffy. This will take about 5 minutes. Frost cupcakes. Keep refrigerated. Makes 24 cupcakes.

Baker’s Notes: Katie and I had a blast baking these pumpkin

spice latte cupcakes! They are based off of Starbucks’ famous Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and are just as tasty in cupcake form. When fall comes around, everyone should mix up his or here regular dessert choices. That is why these cupcakes are the perfect treat!

Katie and I learned some things our first time baking this recipe. For instance, when making the icing, be sure to mix the ingredients in order according to the recipe. We accidentally switched the order around and the icing was too thin. If the icing comes out too thin, place it in the fridge for at least 20 minutes, and be sure to spread it onto the cupcakes once they are completely cool too!

Seasonal Fashions by Katie Santamaria and Katie Lynch

’Tis the season! The leaves are changing colors and falling; football is played every weekend; your mom is getting Halloween costume magazines in the mail; and Starbucks comes out with their signature Pumpkin Spice Latte. With a new season of the year comes a new line of style. If you are looking for some fall fashion inspiration, you have come to the right place.

To start, you can never go wrong with boots. For example, combat-boots, ankle boots, and Uggs look great paired with jeans or leggings. To complete the look, throw on a pair of boot socks (Yes, the things that look like leg warmers). These can be found at various shoe stores and usually come in neutral colors.

Additionally, infinity scarves will infinitely be in style! When your oversized sweater or cardigan seems to be missing something, add a scarf. It will immediately improve your look, and it keeps you warm on cold autumn nights.

Overall, when the temperature drops and Halloweentown comes on TV, you will now know how to dress. These chic tips will provide you with a complete fall look for any occasion: bonfires, haunted houses, hay rides, and anything in between.

Lana Del Rey - Honeymoon by Ryan Hickey

Lana Del Rey has recently released her fourth studio album, Honeymoon. The album is composed of 14 tracks, including an interlude and a cover. She is able to take similar themes from her previous albums and incorporate brand new R&B and Jazz influenced tracks into this album. Del Rey opens the album with the title track, “Honeymoon”. “Terrence Loves You”, which is one of Del Rey’s personal favorites, really shows off the jazz sound. “Freak” and “Art Deco” transitions perfectly and make the album more cohesive. “Art Deco” sounds very reminiscent of Del Rey’s debut album, Born to Die, and even samples a song from it. Salvatore is very unique to the rest of album, but I believe that it is the strongest song on the record. “The Blackest Day” is also a great addition to the album and showcases Del Rey’s vocals. Del Rey closes the album with a cover of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” a song recorded by Nina Simone in 1964

I would give the album four out of five stars, because I believe that this is one of Del Rey’s best works. The tracks on this record really allow for her unique vocals to be presented on an album that is put together very well. Although the album lacks up-tempo songs and only has one unique song, I believe that the lyrics make up for this.

Destiny The Taken King Review by Nathan O’Donnell

Destiny The Taken King is a MMO/shared world shooter for the PS4, PS3, Xbox 1, and Xbox 360. Destiny is a loot based game that requires upgrading your gear to progress. There are many ways to obtain this loot. Player vs. Player (PvP) activities have a chance of dropping loot. When playing the game’s Player vs. Environment (PvE), or the game’s AI, loot is rewarded more, but may not be as powerful. In this review I will discuss PvP, PvE, and things I feel need to be improved.

Before I review the game, I want to explain the character system. When choosing your Guardian, you can choose from 3 classes. They are Warlock, Titan, and Hunter. Once you pick a class, you must choose your Guardian’s race. The three races are Human, Exo, and Awoken. For PvP, I would recommend the Stormcaller Warlock, Gunslinger Hunter, or the Hammer of Sol Titan.

Destiny’s PvP is phenomenal. There is a variety of maps, game modes, and special events to play. For example, Trials of Osiris is a 3v3 game mode that is only playable on the weekends. Winning 9 matches in a row will grant you and your team access to the Lighthouse, a temple on the Planet Mercury. Here you can open a chest to be rewarded various weapons and armor pieces, all with a unique paint job. Even if you might not be the best player, normal PvP, or Crucible, can grant rewards equally beneficial.

Destiny’s PvE isn’t for everyone. But for those who do enjoy it a wealth of content is available. Activities range from Raids to Nightfalls to Strikes. Raids are 6 player battles that require team work and are loads of fun to do. My favorite thing to do in Destiny is to Raid. Currently, there are three raids. Only one gives rewards that are currently viable though, which is unfortunate. Nightfalls are more challenging versions of strikes with different modifiers that change the way you and your fireteam play. Despite my praise for Destiny, the game has some major flaws. First of all, there is no in-game LFG. This means you can’t use in-game features to find people to play with. My next issue with the game is there is lag and other connectivity issues in the Crucible. My third problem with the game is that some sub-classes, such as the ones I recommended for PvP, are not fair to fight against while their super is activated. My last major qualm with the game is that some weapons aren’t good in PvP and some weapons from the beginning of the game aren’t in the new expansion.

Destiny The Taken King Review

My rating on Destiny is an 8.5 out of 10. I would definitely recommend getting this game, especially if you don’t usually play MMO style games. Destiny can be a great game to get yourself accustomed to the genre.
