BAB IV
The salinity of seawater is controlled by local variations in the rate of water transport through the
hydrological cycle. These variations are largerly due to temporal and spatial variations in insolation.
Insolation varies over time due to changes in sea state, cloud cover and distance from the sun.
insolations is greatest at low latitudes, where the angle of the sun highest. This causes the temperatureof the surface seawater to increase with descreasing latitude. Variations in insolation also drive
geostrophic and thermohaline circulation. Thus insolation also influences the vertical profiles of
temperature. At low and mid latitudes, three temperature regimes are present, the mixed layer,
thermocline, and deep zone. Due to low atmospheric temperatures and strong winds, the water column
is isothermal at high latitudes.
The larger the difference between surface and deep-water temperatures, the steeper the density
gradient, or pycnocline. Density stratification inhibitits vertical mixing. As a result, deep water masses
tend to retain the temperature and salinity they acquired when they were last at the sea surface. The
path of advective flow of deep water masses can be traced from these unique temperature and salinity
signatures until turbulent mixing with adjacent water masses homogenizes the waters. Since the mixing
is conservative, the source waters of the deep-water masses can be identified from T-S diagrams.
The salinity of surface seawater varies with latitude as a result of shift in the relative rates of water loss
through evaporation and water gain trhough precipitation. Since net evaporative water loss is greatest
at mid latitudes, this is where surface water salinities are highest. Salinity does not increase uniformly
with depth. This is due to the relatively low salinity of the high latitude surface waters that are the
source waters for most deep-water masses. Temporal variations in salinity are largerly restricted to the
sea surface and coastal regions due to the influence of rainfall and river runoff.
Despite short term local variations, the heat content of the atmosphere and ocean remains constantover time scales of years. This steady state is maintained by the net transport of heat from low to high
latitudes by western and eastern boundary currents.
The relatives rates of vertical advection and eddy diffusion in the deep ocean can be calculate from
temperature and salinity gradients using mathematical model . this information has been used to
calculate rates at which nonconservative substances are added or removed from the deep sea.
BAB IV
