(Commencement, cont.)divides people into winners and losers. With his newly conferred “doctoral magic dust,” Dubus said his wish for the graduates was, “to go out there, suffer a little bit, get great growth and find great joy.”

Dubus was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by the school. He is the author of “House of Sand and Fog” (a Finalist for the National Book Award and an Oprah’s Book Club selection which was made into a major motion picture), “The Garden of Last Days”, “Bluesman” and “The Cage Keeper and Other Stories”. He teaches cre-ative writing at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

Southern Vermont College conferred associate’s degrees and bachelor’s degrees to 74 students on Sunday afternoon, a class that has achieved “remarkable successes,” according to President Karen Gross. Prior to the keynote address two SVC students, Sarah Hersey of Bennington and Lynn Reingold of Concord, N.H., offered their classmates parting remarks. Bennington Chief of Police Richard Gauthier, SVC Class of ’91 and an instructor in criminal justice at the college, was given the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award, in recognition of his contributions in his career, community service and personal achievements.

Eight graduates earned valedictory and salutatory honors. The tra-ditional baccalaureate degree Valedictorian was Melissa Sweeney of Arlington, Vt. The nontraditional baccalaureate degree Valedictorian was Sarah Hersey. The traditional baccalaureate degree Salutatorian student was Lindsay Baker. Nontraditional baccalaureate degree Salutatorian was Mary Lewis of Troy, N.Y.

In the associate degree program, the traditional Valedictorian student was Ann Driscoll of Bennington. The nontraditional Valedictorian associate’s degree program student was Lynn Reingold. The traditional salutatorian was Susan Heaney of Merrimack, N.H. The nontraditional associate’s degree Salutatorian was Philip Bushey of East Wallingford, Vt.

Three traditional awards were presented to graduating students. The William A. Glasser Award, honoring a student for achieving outstand-ing personal and academic growth while at the College, was given to Jessica Fonner of Washington, Vt. The Lynda Curry Memorial Award, honoring the graduate who best exemplifies the fulfillment of the College’s mission, was given to Krystal Poulen of Readsboro, Vt. The Edward H. Everett Award, acknowledging numerous contributions to the Southern Vermont College community, was presented to Leslie Surdam of Hoosick, N.Y.

Hoosick Falls Girl Scout Troop #1313 is holding a car wash and bake sale on Saturday, May 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the People’s Gas & Oil Company, Route 22 in Hoosick Falls (north of the Village). Each wash will cost $5. Baked goods and bottled water will also be for sale. The troop is raising funds for a trip to Washington, D.C., in August. TriState Pennysaver News Launches New “Five to Revive” Program to Help

Boost the EconomyDuring these tough economic times, there is an all-too-thin margin

between success and failure. Many good businesses have been caught up in the recession and have had to close their doors. The TriState Pennysaver News does not wish to sit idly by and wait for things to get better. We want to be an active part of a solution for the communities we serve. It is in this spirit of community activism that we propose the “Five to Revive” campaign. This campaign, with everyone’s participa-tion, will help consumers save money and motivate people to get out, start shopping and revive local business!

The campaign revolves around the “V” symbol, based on the Roman numeral five. It also symbolizes the moment the economy stops its decline and the recovery process begins.

Here is how “Five to Revive” works: The “V” buttons are for sale at the TriState Pennysaver News office for $5 each; shoppers wear the button while shopping at participating locations (indicated by a V decal in their store window) with those merchants providing a 5% discount on goods or services. TERMINATOR SALVATIONIn this fourth installment of the

durable Terminator series, the year is 2018, and a nuclear holocaust has effectively ended civilization as we knew it. With Terminators snapping up what little remains of the human race, a small group of survivors have gone underground in an effort to battle the control-ling organization Skynet, which shocked the world by triggering the apocalypse. Standing up against all odds is John Connor, the one man who knew this was going to happen, and Marcus Wright, a death-row inmate who’s about to be executed when he’s given a new lease on life by Dr. Serena Kogan, a scientist with big plans for this dead man walking. Though Connor is highly suspi-cious of Kogan’s creation, he forms a precarious bond with the resus-citated Marcus as the two search for a way to infiltrate and conquer a very imposing enemy.

“How’d they do that?” is the question that’ll be stuck in the minds of “Terminator Salvation” audiences as soon as they get a glimpse of the film’s most surprising guest stars. Not only does the original Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, turn up to menace stars Christian Bale and Sam Worthington in the film’s third act, he looks exactly like he did when he first took on the role.

No, the 61-year-old action star-turned-current California Governor didn’t blow the state’s budget on plastic surgery – in fact, he never even showed up on the set. The effect was achieved by using a digital image of Schwarzenegger mapped onto the computer way back when by Terminator’s original FX guru, the late Stan Winston, along with previously existing footage and the body of another, younger Austrian bodybuilder, Roland Kickinger.

Whipple City Festival Set for June 19-21The 17th annual Whipple City Festival will be held June 19-21 in the

beautiful setting of the village parks in the historic village of Greenwich, New York. The festival honors Job Whipple, who settled on the banks of the Batten Kill River to prosper this community in 1791.

The festival will kick off with the Bicentennial parade at 6 p.m. on Friday and will feature free live music, great food, a craft fair and carni-val games, including laser tag and a dunking booth, all weekend long.

“The Whipple City festival hopes to be bigger and better this year, with a brand new, affordable family carnival and a return performance by Live Radio Disney,” said Kathy Nichols Tomkins, executive director of the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, which is organizing the event.

Families will also enjoy free horse and wagon rides Saturday and Sunday, music from Captain Squeeze and the Zydeco Moshers on Friday and Greenwich’s own Bob Warren on Sunday afternoon. The village gazebo will also be the stage for special children’s programming by Radio Disney on Saturday afternoon.

Other highlights include the annual 5K Walk/Run on Saturday morn-ing and a wildlife and animal display in Dorr Park all day Saturday.

Class Day Recital: A Recital by Williams Department of Music Seniors

The Williams College Department of Music proudly presents their graduating seniors in a concert on Saturday, June 6, at 11 a.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall on the Williams College campus. This free event is open to the public.

This hour long morning of music will represent all ranges of music including classical and jazz. Free workshop on Legal Issues for Caregivers at the

Bennington Free LibraryThe Bennington County Caregivers Coaltion is pleased to

announce an upcoming workshop, Legal Issues for Caregivers, at the Bennignton Free Library on Thursday, June 4th from 5-7 p.m. Dan-ielle D. Fogarty, Esq., a partner in the local law firm of Donovan and O’Connor, LLP and member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys, will identify the important legal documentation care recipi-ents should have in place as their care needs increase. Durable Power of Attorney for Financial Matters, Health Information Privacy Act (HIPA) authorizations and Medi-cal Advanced Directives are some of the topics that will be addressed at this workshop.

Blue Hand Luke to Rock HoosickArea band Blue Hand Luke will kick off the summer season as they

bring their seven member band to Hoosick Falls to play at the Town of Hoosick Skating Rink on Saturday, May 30, from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Blue Hand Luke is well known for knowing how to keep a dance floor full. If you like The Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughn and The Doors, then you will love Blue Hand Luke. The band is led by saxophonist Luke McNammee, keyboardist Tony Perrino, drummer Peter Vumbaco, Joe Mele on guitar and Mick Jagger’s cousin, vocalist Tommy Love. Luke himself played with The Cobras, one of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s early bands. He toured in 1979 with the international recording act Roomful of Blues. The band has decades of experience on the local rock scene.

Tickets are $10.00 and are available at Thorpe’s Pharmacy, the Town Office, The Ice Kreme Kafe and at the door the night of the show. Beverages will be sold. Pancakes Improve Sight and Hearing When you come and enjoy the pancakes, bacon and Vermont maple

syrup the NorShaft Lions will be serving up on Sunday, June 7, you will not only have a great breakfast but you will be helping the Lions support their Sight and Hearing programs.

Lions have restored sight to 7.5 million people through cataract sur-geries, prevented serious vision loss for 30 million people and improved eye care services for hundreds of millions. Lions also take an active role in promoting hearing loss prevention and assisting those who are deaf or hearing impaired. Proceeds from the NorShaft Lions Pancake Breakfast will go towards helping the sight and/or hearing impaired right here in our local community.

The NorShaft Lions Club’s Third Annual Pancake Breakfast is Sunday, June 7 from 8 a.m. to noon. The breakfast includes pancakes, bacon, sausage, Vermont maple syrup, juice and coffee, tea or milk. The fee is $5 per person. There is no charge for children under 8.

The breakfast is being held at the Shaftsbury Elementary School (Buck Hill Road, South Shaftsbury, VT).

Berkshire Bank Foundation Announces Scholarship Winners

Berkshire Bank announced today that it has selected 18 high school seniors to receive $2,000 scholarships through its new Berkshire Bank Foundation Scholarship Program. Six of the winners are from Berkshire County and were awarded their scholarships at an Awards Ceremony held today at Berkshire Bank’s Executive Board Room on West Street in Pittsfield. The ceremony was attended by the recipients and their parents, school officials and Bank personnel.

A total of 32 employees and 10 community leaders reviewed more than 100 applications to select the winners. The winners all live in regions served by Berkshire Bank. In addition to Berkshire County, the recipients come from the Pioneer Valley, the Albany region and south-ern Vermont. The scholarships were awarded to students who have

exemplified community service through their volunteer efforts, have been successful academi-cally and have a demonstrated financial need. Only high school seniors attending high schools in communities served by Berkshire Bank were eligible to apply. The scholarship program highlights the foundation’s support for edu-cation and the bank’s commit-ment to promote volunteerism in the community.

The six Berkshire County recipients are: Joseph Delmaso, Pittsfield High School; Andrew Caffrey, Wahconah Regional High School; Brandon Rousseau, St. Joseph Central High School; David O’Neil, St. Joseph Regional High School; Dwight Kelly, Monument Mountain Regional High School; and Nancy Quizhpi, Monument Mountain Regional High School.

Foundation Executive Director Peter J. Lafayette said, “We were pleased with the quality of the applicants for the first year of our schol-arship program. They represent the best of high school seniors who have made a positive difference in their schools and communities. By targeting these scholarships to these young leaders, we hope to encour-age volunteerism among young people that will lead to a lifetime of

community service.” In 2008, Berkshire Bank began

a bank-wide Employee Volunteer Program in which employees participate in group projects that benefit non-profit organizations and the community. The bank believes that promoting vol-unteerism at an early age will benefit both the volunteers and communities and will hopefully lead to on-going community involvement.

Fish Fry to Benefit Relay for Life TeamRelay For Life Team Charles’ Dahls will sponsor a Fish Fry Dinner on

Wednesday May 27, at the Bennington Elks on Washington Ave. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the price of the dinner is $10. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

Old-Time Baseball Tournament Dust off your baseball glove! This is your chance to be a part of

History! The NorShaft Lions Park Renovation committee is looking for recent and not-so-recent Little Leaguers (or other interested players) to play in an old-time tournament at the NorShaft field on July 18th (Rain date: July 19th). This tournament will be the last game played on the Little League Field before the renovations begin.

All proceeds from this fundraising tournament will go toward the cost of the renovations of the entire park including making the Little League field eligible for regulation play, new playground equipment, skate park equipment, updated concession stand, and a new band stand area to offer concerts in the park. Some of these renovations are already underway. The new skate park equipment has been ordered and installed. Playground equipment is on order and should be on site in the early summer. We are close to reaching our goal but need your help to do so.

So, take out that glove and head up to the Park on July 18. We are looking for as many local Little Leaguers and baseball players as pos-sible to participate. Whether you are twenty, thirty or seventy, join fellow teammates and friends in a terrific event that supports your local community. If you are in contact with former Little Leaguers that are no longer in the area, please pass the word along. This fun-filled day will be complimented by a concert sponsored by Lake Paran and is expected to be an event for the whole family.

■ WEEKLY ALMANAC ■ Dead Man’s Hand and Chocolate??? PAVE is proud to once again present an evening of decadently

scrumptious chocolate desserts and a “whodunit” murder mystery on Saturday, June 6.

Doors open at 7 p.m., when you’ll get to enjoy a virtually unlimited selection of chocolate desserts created by chefs and chocolatiers from Bennington County’s finest restaurants and shops.

At around 8 p.m., the murder mystery, “Dead Man’s Hand”, begins. Two couples are lured to a remote location to be murdered one by one. Who is the murderer and what do those about to be murdered have in common? Sound familiar? Maybe, but are you really watching what you think you’re watching ... and does the title really mean what you think it means? Don’t believe everything you see. Expect the unexpected. Who committed murder?

Tickets for the evening are $25 for adults and $10 for children under 12.Tickets are available at the South Street Café, the Bennington Bookshop, Whitman’s Feed Store, the Northshire Bookstore or by call-ing PAVE at 442-2370. The event takes place for one evening only at the First Baptist Church, 601 Main Street, Bennington.
