Community Meals in CambridgeThe next dinner will be served at First Baptist Church in Cambridge,

New York on Saturday, Feb. 28 from noon to 1 p.m. This month’s menu will be spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad, garlic bread, make-your-own sundaes and beverages. This month’s meal is sponsored by the Green Mountain Antique Car Club. The monthly meals are organized by First Baptist Church of Cambridge, with the assistance of commu-nity churches and organizations such as 4-H clubs, scouts and so on. There have been as many as 80 people served at these dinners.

The meals are free and open to all. The First Baptist Church is located on West Main St. between Glens Falls National Bank and the IGA store. Reservations are not necessary. Takeouts will be available at 1 p.m. (bring containers) if there is food available at that time.

Any organization or individual wishing to help is asked to call 518-677-3327. The next community meal will be held on March 28.

Fish Fry Dinners Available During LentSt. Mary’s Academy of Hoosick Falls, New York and the Knights of

Columbus will be collaborating during the Lenten season to sell fish fry dinners. Dinners will be sold every Friday from February 27 to April 3. The fish fry dinners will be sold out of the Immaculate Conception Church located on Main Street in Hoosick Falls between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dinners are also available for takeout. Mystery of Salem, MassachusettsM.E. Kemp, writer of historical mysteries, will talk about Salem,

Massachusetts in 1692 at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting on Monday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center on Garfield Road in Stephentown, New York. It is free and open to the public.

Kemp used witch trial era Salem as the setting for her book Death of a Bawdy Belle. She did extensive historical research on the details of the period, including costume, foods and manner of speech. She will tell how she gathered this background information as well as what that time and place were like. Her mysteries feature widow Hetty Henry acting as detective in Boston, Massachusetts and Albany, New York.

Celebrating Lincoln WomenWomen’s History Month and the Lincoln 200th birthday will be

commemorated at the Solomon Wright Library in Pownal, Vermont this Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m. Guest speaker C.J. King will present a program on “The Lincoln Women”

Author of Four Marys and a Jessie, King lives in Jamaica, Vermont with her husband, Ben Williams, and has been a professional writer for 25 years. She has written articles in newspapers and magazines, teaches and holds a B.A. in journalism from Ball State University and an M.F.A. from U. of Mass-Amherst.

Reviewers have said King’s research is a fascinating read and has “brought these women to life.” A question and answer period will follow and refreshments will be available.

The world “vinyl” might con-jure images of any number of protective materials and prod-ucts. But for Hal March, owner of Toonerville Trolley Records in Williamstown, Massachusetts, it’s a sacred reminder of the past — and present — of his unique business.

In the late 1970s, March start-ed selling vinyl records out of the back of a Boyertown Step van. His primary markets were college campuses such as Bennington and Middlebury, Vermont. Then in 1978, he decided to make a go of a permanent site and settled on 131 Water St., where he still operates today, just south of the Williams College Campus.

“The aim has always been as wide a range of music as possible,” March said. “We have indy rock, small-label folk music, classical and jazz — our specialty. You can also find punk, hardcore, obscure industrial noise, ’50s doo-wop, techno, bluegrass, world music. You name it; we try to carry — or special order — it all.”

Toonerville has thousands of out-of-print records — many still sealed — both LPs and 45s. March stocks many rare collectibles and hundreds of bargains at $1 apiece or less. In keeping with the times, the store carries new CDs and a

good supply of used CDs for $8 or less, plus an always interesting and worthwhile $2 sale bin. One can also find guitar strings and whatever used stereo equipment March is able to acquire.

So if you’re a serious collector, Toonerville wants you to visit. It’s much better stocked than the back of March’s old van.

One-Day Family Yoga WorkshopThe Hubbard Hall Dance and Movement Program in Cambridge,

New York is offering a “family time” opportunity — a one-day Family Yoga Workshop. Parents and children (ages 6 and up) can learn ways to use yoga postures and breathing techniques to enhance relation-ships within the family. Absolutely no yoga experience is necessary. The workshop will be taught by Zaidee Bliss, a certified yoga instructor who has taken, among many others, workshops in yoga for children.

At Risk for Heart Attack and Stroke? Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, kill-

ing almost 700,000 people each year. A stroke can be deadly or cause life-altering side effects. What are the risk factors?

The Wellness Connection of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) and Bennington Cardiology are presenting a Heart Attack and Stroke Risk Screening this Friday, Feb. 27 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) in Bennington, Vermont. Screenings will be done by appointment only; call 802-447-5076.

Registered nurses will be available to check blood pressure, choles-terol and blood sugar level. Participants will have their pulse rates evalu-ated and get electrocardiogram (EKG) tests. The screening includes a wallet-sized information card showing baseline EKG and a private consultation with SVMC staff to discuss test results and determine personal heart attack and stroke risk.

The screening fee is $20; a sliding fee is available to those who are uninsured. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for all screenings. No fasting is required.

Gardening Forum Series Continues with “Starting Seedlings”

Hubbard Hall Projects presents the next program in its Gardening Forum series on Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m. in the Beacon Feed Building behind Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, New York.

Share ideas and successful techniques for starting seedlings for the garden with “show & tell” of trays, lights, timing and varieties, as well as soil, compost and mixes. All programs in the Gardening Series are free and open to all interested. This program will be of special interest to the beginner.

Lenten Activities at St. Peter’s St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington, Vermont will offer the

Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 25, at services at 8 a.m. (said service), noon (with organ and congregational hymns) and 7 p.m. (with organ and choir).

During Lent, the Stations of the Cross will be observed every Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the church. The Stations of the Cross simulate a pilgrim-age along the 14 last incidents in the life of Christ from Pilate’s house to Christ’s entombment. Prayers and meditations are offered at each of the 14 stations. Morning Prayer will be read Monday through Fridays at 8 a.m. in the Lady Chapel. Meditation will be held on Mondays at 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at 5:30 p.m.

Rotary Four-Way Test Speech ContestBennington, Vermont area high school students have an exciting

opportunity to tell people what they think and win cash prizes. The Bennington and Catamount Rotary Clubs are holding the Four-Way Test Speech Contest on Wednesday, March 11.

High school students in grades nine through 12 living in Arlington, Bennington, North Bennington, Pownal, Shaftsbury and Woodford, Vermont are eligible to enter. Prizes will be awarded to the top three speakers; $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third. The first place winner will be eligible for the District competition in April.

Students choose their own topics and deliver short five to seven-min-ute speeches on their chosen topics. Speeches must address the values of the Rotary’s Four-Way Test. The contest will be held in the Rotary Room of the Bennington Free Library from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Lincoln as Commander and ChiefOn Thursday, Feb. 26, nationally renowned Civil War historian and

award-winning author Craig L. Symonds will deliver the second lecture of Hildene’s 2009 Winter History Series. The focus of this year’s pre-sentations is the complexity and character of the 16th president in this 200th anniversary year of his birth. Symonds will speak on “Lincoln as Commander in Chief,” a subject in which he is well versed.

Each lecture takes place at 7 p.m. in the Beckwith Room. The 45-minute presentations are followed by 30-minute question and answer periods, and all are free and open to the public. The final lectures will be “Lincoln the Lawyer.” and “Lincoln: A Study in Character.”

Hubbard Hall Projects in Cambridge, New York will offer a series of ten voice and musi-cianship classes for children and adults taught by Steven Marking on Saturday afternoons beginning February 28.

Voice and Musicianship Class for ages 8 to 16 will meet on Saturdays from noon until 1 p.m. from February 28 through May 9. Students will learn healthy hab-

its for singing. This class estab-lishes musicianship skills with sight singing exercises and works on presentation through perfor-mance of songs. The total cost of the course is $100.

In Voice and Musicianship Class for Adults (ages 17 and over), par-ticpants will learn to sing more efficiently and learn healthy vocal production through structured lessons. The ten-week session will

age or decay? How can a pristine piece be kept that way? Bring items (of reasonable size) to the presentation, and Franklin will address specific issues as they pertain to each piece.

Richard Myers Richard Myers, age 82, a resident of Bennington, Vermont died on

Saturday morning, Feb. 14, 2009 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a long illness.

He was born in Bennington on December 8, 1927, the son of the late John and Jennie Elle (Stratton) Myers. He received his education in local schools and was a graduate of Bennington High School. Myers also graduated from St. Joseph’s Business School and from Castleton State Teachers College. In earlier years, he taught in North Adams, Massachusetts and various local elementary schools.

For over 25 years Myers was a bartender at the former Paradise Restaurant in Bennington and had also managed the Paradise Motel.

He served in the Navy during the time of the Korean War. He was an avid cook and gardener and loved vacationing in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee at Dolly World. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales parish in Bennington.

Myers is survived by: one sister and her husband, Marie and Robert Townsend; two brothers, James Myers and Robert and his wife, Edith Myers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial contribu-tions may be made to the support of the poor, through the Reverend Michael DeMasi, at Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, Vermont 05201.

Patricia Martin Mrs. Patricia M. Martin, 68, wife of Leo Martin and a resident of

Bennington, Vermont, passed away at home on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009.She was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on February 20, 1940, the

daughter of the late Edmund and Geraldine (Sullivan) Elger. Martin received her education in Pittsfield and later became a paraprofessional, working at Catamount School in Bennington. She was devoted to help-ing children learn and succeed.

Martin enjoyed doing handmade crafts, Mahjongg puzzles and, most of all, spending time with those that she loved.

Survivors include: her husband, Leo Martin; a daughter, Lori Kaley-Wilkins and husband, Mark; her step-children and their spouses, Sharon and Al Stubbs, Tim and Robin Martin, Shauna and Stephen Spiewak and Tracy Martin; two grandchildren; many step grandchil-

Katherine A. FoucherMrs. Katherine A. Foucher, 92, died peacefully February 17, 2009 at

her home (which was also her birthplace) in Bennington, Vermont with her children around her.

Foucher was born on the 24th of April 1916, the fifth of seven children of Edward F. P. and Jessie Mary (Aldrich) Whitman. She was educated in the Bennington schools. She married Walter D. Foucher at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.

Foucher was always devoted to her family and her children. Due to the time and necessities of life, she was unable to be a stay-at-home mother. She worked at various mills and factories around Bennington, including the Allen-A, E-Z, National Carbon/Union Carbide and Tansitor. But her children never felt neglected. In addition to as much of her time as she could give them, she had her mother, Jessie, and her sister, Mary, to help raise them.

Shortly after World War II struck, Walter enlisted in the Navy and she and the children moved out of their small apartment on the corner of Safford St. and Carrigan Lane to live at 224 Grove St., the fam-ily homestead. Her love and devotion to her children became more encompassing as her grandchildren and great grandchildren were born. She extended this love to her 15 great grandchildren and was a favorite of them all.

One of Foucher’s great-great grandfathers was Welcome Luther, one of the early settlers in Bennington, appearing in the 1810 census as a blacksmith and also in the Harwood Diaries.

Foucher was a member of the Bennington Senior Citizens Club and a former member of AARP. She was a convert to Catholicism and a mem-ber of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church. She also volunteered with the Meals on Wheels Program.

The family wishes to give special thanks to dear friends Harold and Lois Weaver and caregivers Joann Conklin and Joyce Burgess. Many thanks to VNA and Hospice and the volunteers for their support.

Survivors include: her children Walter Jr. and Mary Ellen Foucher, Diane Leary and Thomas and Carla Foucher; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Cecile Mary RoyCecile Mary Roy, 88, a resident of North Bennington, Vermont, died

Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation fol-lowing a long illness.

She was born in Bennington, Vermont on June 6, 1920, the daughter of the late Levi and Bernadette (Pinnsoneault) Roy. She received her education in Bennington and graduated from Sacred Heart School. She later attended the Austin Beauty School in Albany, New York.

Roy owned and operated the Towne Beauty Salon on Main Street in Bennington for many years, retiring in 1985. She was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women in Bennington. Her home and family were her main interests. She also enjoyed knitting and reading.

Survivors include: her brother, Francis “Pete” Roy, and his wife, Diane; her nieces, Denise Short and family, Annette D’Amico and family and Patricia Pleasant and Jay and family; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins. If friends desire, contributions may be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter through Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, Vermont 05201.
