THE BOOKSTORE DRAWS FROM THE SAN ANTONIO VERNACU-LAR THROUGH THE SELECT USE OF REGIONAL COLORS AND MATERIALS IN THE SUR-ROUNDING LANDSCAPE. RED (BRICKS), YELLOW (OAK), AND GREEN ( GREEN WALLS/ ROOFS + TREES) THAT CONNECT IT TO NEARBY ARTPACE. THE SPACE CONTAINS A CAFE AND ACTS AS A CULTURAL LANDMARK IN THE COMMUNITY WITH ITS ROOFTOP TERRACES, OUTDOOR AUDITO-RIUM, AND VARIOUS MEETING ROOMS THAT LET THE SPACE BE USED FOR ART, DANCE, SCULP-TURE, MUSIC, ETC.. THE BOOK-STORE CAN BE SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE STRUC-TURE BY THE USE OF A LARGE FOLDING GLASS PARTITIONS ON BOTH LEVELS MAKING IT AVAILABLE AFTER HOURS FOR OTHER EVENTS. NORTH-SOUTH ORIENTATION OF THE STRUC-TURAL MEMBERS ALLOWS THE SPACE TO BE COMPLETELY DE-VOID OF VERTICAL ELEMENTS LEADING TO A MORE SPACIOUS AND GRAND SPACE.

LHI VISITOR CENTERLOCATION:LAND HERITAGE INSTITUTE; SOUTH OF MEDINA RIVERSAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

LOCATED CENTRALLY ON THE SITE, THE VISITOR CENTER IS PUSHED UP AGAINST A SLOPING CREEK SIDE THAT IS LINED WITH DENSE VEGETATION. THE VOLUMES ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE MAIN DATUM ARE IN “COMPRESSION” BEING LITERALLY PUSHED OUT OVER THE CLIFF AND EN-VELOPED BY A DENSE CANOPY. THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE MAIN DATUM SLIDES SEAM-LESSLY OUT INTO AN OPEN FIELD OF NA-TIVE GRASSES AND WILDFLOWERS. THE ORIENTATION MAXIMIZES AIR FLOW AND CIRCULATION THROUGH THE SPACES.

THE CENTER GUIDES THE OCCUPANT THROUGH A SERIES OF SPACES PUSHING THEM INTO COM-PRESSION AND TENSION AS THE MATERIALS BECOME HEAVIER/ L IGHTER AND THE SPACE NARROWER/ WIDER. THROUGH THIS JOUR-NEY THE OCCUPANT PASSES AMONG MANY MATERIALS ON THE WALLS AND FLOORS AS WELL AS IN THE GARDENS THAT EVOKE A SEN-SORY RESPONSE. FURTHERMORE, THE STRUC-TURES BY BEING EMBEDDED IN THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE AND UTIL IZ ING MAN-MADE AND NATURAL MATERIALS, BLUR THE L INE BETWEEN THE BUILT AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.

THE VOLUMES ARE COMPOSED MAINLY OF EARTH-LY MATERIALS SUCH AS OF CEDAR AND RAMMED EARTH WALLS THAT ARE PAIRED/ CONTRASTED WITH THE EXTENSIVE USE OF STANDING SEAM METAL ROOFS. THEIR ANGULAR AND DRASTIC SHAPES DE-FINE THEM AGAINST THE LANDSCAPE AS THEY REACH OUT INTO IT. THE EXTENSIVE USE OF PORCHES AND OUTDOOR PAVILIONS ALLOWS A PLEASANT AND COMFORTABLE ATMOSPHERE THROUGHOUT THE CENTER. THE LARGE LANDMARK TOWARDS THE EN-TRANCE TERMINATES THE MAJOR DATUM WHILE TIE-ING THE CENTER TO THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE.STANDING SEAM SHADING DEVICE PERSPECTIVE |2|

SEAHOLM INTAKE COMPETITIONLOCATION:AUSTIN, TEXAS

THE DESIGN GOAL WAS TO PRESERVE THE CHARACTER OF AN AUSTIN ICON WHILE CREATING A SPACE FOR PUBLIC ENJOY-MENT. ARCHITECTURAL CHANGES TO THE STRUCTURES WERE DONE IN SUCH A WAY AS TO EMPHASIZE AND ENHANCE THE FEEL OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN AS WELL AS TO MAKE IT MORE ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC. PUBLIC SPACES FOR EVENTS AND ART, SUSTAINABIL-ITY, PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SOCIAL INTER-ACTION ARE KEY ELEMENTS IN THE DESIGN.

ORGANIC MODULAR SYSTEMPROTOTYPE IN: BARCELONADESIGNED FOR ANYWHERE

AS THE NEEDS OF ARCHITECTS EVOLVE WE DEPART FROM TODAY’S “STATIC” ARCHITEC-TURE TOWARDS A FREE AND ORGANIC AR-CHITECTURE THAT WAXES AND WANES DE-PENDING ON THE IMMEDIATE, FUTURE, AND LONG TERM NEEDS OF ANY GIVEN REGION.

THE STRUCTURE IS COMPOSED OF ALUMI-NUM SCAFFOLDING PIPE WELDED TOGETH-ER WITH STEEL PLATES AND A SERIES OF LASER CUT “BEAMS” AND “COLUMNS” WITH SNAP IN PANELS THE STRUCTURE UTILIZES THE HIGH STRENGTH TO WEIGHT RATIO OF ALUMINUM, ALONG WITH DIVIDING STRUC-TURAL ELEMENTS INTO MULTIPLE SMALLER ELEMENTS, THE STRUCTURE BECOMES EX-TREMELY RIGID AND STRONG, YET INCRED-IBLY LIGHT.

UTILIZING ALUMINUM THE STRUCTURE CAN BE ENDLESSLY UP-CYCLED TO CREATE NEW AND IMPROVED STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS OR TURNED INTO OTHER PRODUCTS AS THEIR DEMAND INCREASES.

FOUNDRY FITNESSLOCATION:

PORTLAND, OREGON

POSITIONED BETWEEN THE LADD AND BROOKLYN NEIGHBORHOODS THE PROJECT EXISTS ALONG A MAJOR TRAN-SIT CORRIDOR. DIVERSITY AND RHYTHM ARE PREVELENT IN OUR LIVES; THESE THEMES ARE COMPOUNDED IN GYM-NASIUMS. THE GYM’S WALLS ARE DE-FINED BY THE RHYTHM OF LAP LANES THAT CREATE A STRONG VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL PRESSENCE THROUGH THE SPACES. A MULTITUDE OF VARYING SIZED SPACES FROM INDIVIDUAL WORK-OUT ROOMS TO LARGE OPEN SPACES TO A CAFE ALLOW A DIVERSE RANGE OF DEMOGRAPHICS TO INHABIT AND USE THE SPACE. THE MATERIAL PALLETTE SEEKS TO BLEND WITH THE INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE OF THE SITE.
