“We love because He first

loved us”. 1 John 4:19

Dear Family in Christ Jesus,

May the joy of the Lord be

your strength and the heart of

your ‘native language’. As

October arrives there is an air

of joy and thankfulness all

around us. In part this is the

because in October we, as

Canadians, celebrate a

National Day of

Thanksgiving. Our

neighbours to the south catch

up to us in November with

their thankfulness and praise

to God. I remember the first

time I realized this was a

North American holiday

alone. I was shocked; I was

also in my forties! How did I

go that long without knowing

this? Well in part I had not

done much world travel, and

in part it just did not make

sense in my heart, my being,

my way of life to not

celebrate Thanksgiving!

Does the rest of the world

not love Turkey and

pumpkin pie as much as we

do? Do they not enjoy

harvest? If you follow these

questions you will see again

that I had not done much

world travel and I saw things

through the lens of my life

experiences and through my

‘native language’! There is

that term again. What does it

mean? English? No.

Canadian? No. It is more than

that – it is the language of my

life. I learned it at an early age

speaking from what I

experienced and was taught

and lived out each day. We

have a language that we speak,

and that we interpret the

speaking of others by – a Love

Language if you will. More

on that in a bit.

It is fascinating to me that we

also each have our own

‘geography’ developed within

us from our earliest memories.

I am a water and trees kind of

girl. What are you? It is more

than just loving water and the

smell of trees. It is a spiritual

geography in that I am filled

up, renewed, strengthened to

carry on when I can hear

water, walk barefoot in the

waves and smell trees! If you

would like to explore this

concept of spiritual geography

I recommend Kathleen Norris’

book “Dakota”. I can live in

other geographies but need to

connect with my own in order

to stay grounded and strong.

In the same way I speak and

understand according to my

‘native’ language. What am I

talking about? We are

making use of Dr. Gary

Chapman’s book “The 5

Love Languages” in our

FIREPROOF Your

Marriage Study. In his

book Dr. Chapman

identifies five basic

languages people use both

to speak love, and to hear

love spoken. He says we

learn, develop and use our

own native love language

from early childhood. In

marriage it becomes

necessary to know and

understand how each

partner speaks love and

hears love spoken. He has

identified five basic ways

that happens with many

dialects possible within

each way. It is

fascinating and there are

much deeper truths in this

concept than one first

imagines. I have been

pondering and studying

what this means in how

we live out our lives in

other ways using our

‘native’ language of love

and life. I now realize

that when I first learned

that Thanksgiving was not

celebrated all over the

world it was like hearing

a ‘foreign’ language!

What were they saying?

Continued from page 1

How could this be? (I

knew about the Puritans

and the first

Thanksgiving, I just

never imagined it hadn’t

caught on all over the

world!)

So where am I going

with all this talk of

languages and

geography? Well for

three weeks in October

we are going to dive into

a Sermon Series on

“Love Languages”. We

will study God’s Word,

considering the richer,

deeper meanings of the

word ‘Love’ as found in

the original Greek. We

will explore what

‘storge’ love taught us as

young children, how we

grew when we

experienced ‘philos’ love

and when we

encountered ‘eros’ love.

What do they all mean in

how we live out our

callings as children of

God, as husbands and

wives, as parents and

children, as friends and

co-workers? Above all

we will delve into the

meaning and application

of ‘agape’ love and how

it winds through each of

the above expressions of

love making them

possible in the first

place.

As our Thanksgiving

worship throughout the

month of October we

will be challenged to

look at love not as the

world looks at it and not

in the blithe and trendy

words of our culture and

society today, but rather

in the depths of this truth

from Scripture, “God is

Love” (1John 4:8).

What does that mean for

me? For my family? For

our church, community,

world? Consider these

words in 1 John 3 & 4,

“See what love the

Father has given us, that

we should be called

children of God; and

that is what we are.”

“Little children, let us

love, not in word or

speech, but in truth and

action.” “In this is love,

not that we loved God

but that He loved us and

sent His Son to be the

atoning sacrifice for our

sins.” And “We love

because He first loved

us”. As your Pastor I am

asking you, even

begging you, to make

worship a commitment

for yourself and for your

family so that you may

gather to receive and

hear the life changing

Word of God which

changes us, which

continues to shape and

mold us into the people

God would have us be so

that we may be light for

the world.

Two things I know for

sure. Christ Jesus loved

us to the point of death.

Christ Jesus loves us so

much that He gives us

life – abundant life! This

is truth to explore, pray

about, give thanks for as

we live it out each day.

Come find your ‘native’

tongue and learn how to

use it to the Glory of

God, giving thanks

through Jesus Christ!

In the powerful, precious

name of Jesus, Happy

Thanksgiving!

Sometimes Church

is Hard

By Arianna Freelen

I sat in a meeting. The

discussion was heated.

The conversation heavy.

Hearts were burdened.

Chests were puffed.

Sorrow, pain, arrogance,

curiosity, humility, fear,

courage, and forgiveness

sat together in a single

room.

As I looked around the

church, I just kept

thinking—

Church is hard.

Church is hard for the

person walking through

the doors, afraid of

judgement.

Church is hard for the

pastor’s family, under

the microscope of an

entire body.

Church is hard for the

prodigal soul returning

home, broken and

battered by the world.

Church is hard for the

girl who looks like she

has it all together, but

doesn’t.

Church is hard for the

couple who fought the

entire ride to service.

Church is hard for the

single mom, surrounded

by couples holding

hands, and seemingly

perfect families.

Church is hard for the

widow and widower with

no invitation to lunch

after service.

Church is hard for the

deacon with an estranged

child.

Church is hard for the

choir member

overwhelmed by the

weight of the lyrics in

that song.

Church is hard for the

man insecure in his role

as a leader.

Church is hard for the

wife who longs to be led

by a righteous man.

Church is hard for the

nursery volunteer who

desperately longs for a

baby to love.

Church is hard for the

single woman and single

man, praying God brings

them a mate.

Church is hard for the

teenage girl, wearing a

scarlet letter, ashamed of

her mistakes.

Church is hard for the

gays, adulterers, liars,

cheats, and slanderers.

Church is hard for the

sinners.

Church is hard for me.

It’s hard because on the

outside it all looks shiny

and perfect. Sunday best

in behavior and dress.

However, underneath

those layers, you find a

body of imperfect

people, carnal souls,

selfish motives.

But, here is the beauty of

church—

Church isn’t a building,

mentality, or expectation.

Church is a body.

Church is a group of

sinners, saved by grace,

living in fellowship as

saints.

Church is a body of

believers bound as

brothers and sisters by an

eternal love.

Church is a holy ground

where sinners stand as

equals before the Throne

of Grace.

Church is a refuge for

broken hearts and a

training ground for

mighty warriors.

Church is a converging

of confrontation and

invitation. Where sin is

confronted and hearts are

invited to seek

restoration.

Church is a lesson in

faith and trust.

Church is a bearer of

burdens and a giver of

hope.

Church is a family. A

family coming together,

setting aside differences,

forgetting past mistakes,

rejoicing in the smallest

of victories.

Church, the body, and

the circle of sinners-

turned-saints, is where

He resides, and if we

ask, He is faithful to

come.

So even on the hard days

at church—

The days when I am at

odds with a sister. When

I’ve fought with my

husband because we’re

late once again. When

I’ve walked in bearing

burdens heavier than my

heart can handle, yet

masking the pain with a

smile on my face. When

I’ve worn a scarlet letter,

under the microscope.

When I’ve longed for a

baby to hold, or fought

tears as the lyrics were

sung. When I’ve walked

back in, afraid and

broken, after walking

away.

I’ll remember, He has

never failed to meet me

there.

FYI You have an opportunity

for service to our church

family at TLC.

We would welcome

anyone interested in the

preparation of coffee after

Sunday worship or the

clean-up, to come into the

Kitchen to become

familiar with the routine.

Mission Ministry

Launches a New

Initiative

For several years in the

Fall, the Mission

Ministry Group has

coordinated the

collection of socks

towels and blankets

which we have

distributed locally to the

Women’s Shelter and in

Calgary to Inn from the

Cold, the Mustard Seed

and Calgary Rehab and

Drop-In Centre. The

support from our

congregation has been

amazing, with well over

2500 pairs of socks for

all ages, lots of towels

and blankets donated.

For this we say, “Thank

You!” for your support.

This year, we have

discovered that there are

many ways that people

in Calgary provide the

same support to these

organizations, and

although the need

remains, it is being met

by generous donations

from Calgary and

surrounding areas.

With this in mind, the

Trinity Lutheran

Mission Ministry has

decided to go in a

slightly different

direction. We have

been in conversation

with the Brooks

Women’s Shelter and

with the Champions

Centre, who would

appreciate our support

locally. They have

provided us with a wish

list of items that are in

constant need for their

organizations and we

are hoping that our

congregation can look

at these lists, choose

items that we are able to

provide, and assist these

very important services

in our own community.

We will start collecting

donations during the

third week of October

and will conclude the

last week of November.

The lists will be posted

for your reference, and

gathering bins will be

available in the church

lobby where you can

drop your donations.

The Mission Ministry

will regularly deliver

donations to the

Women’s’ Shelter and

Campions Centre.

Please prayerfully

consider how you can

help with this project, a

way to assist those in

our community who are

in crisis and are in need

of our support.

Thank you!

GOT QUESTIONS??

Many people have questions about the

Bible, or Faith, or Jesus or Other

Religious Beliefs but do not always feel

comfortable asking their questions out

loud or in a group. It was suggested a

while back that we should start a

Question Box where people could put

their questions (with their name or

without). Our Pastors would then have

opportunity to do some study and choose

a question or two to answer in the Trinity

Times each month.

There is now a “GOT QUESTIONS?”

box on the table below the main Bulletin

Board. Please consider what you might

have on your mind and would like to ask

and put in a question or two. Watch for

the answers in coming Trinity Times

editions.

Jesus said, “ask, seek and knock”. Let us

each share our questions that we may all

grow in grace and wisdom.
