The Baptism of our Lord

Divine Service Setting 3 (LSB pg 184)

January 7, 2018 8:00 a.m.

AS WE GATHER Jesus began His work for our salvation when He became man at Christmas.

He began His active work shedding the first drops of redeeming blood at His circumcision. Now

He takes His place alongside all mankind as He stands in the Jordan River. At His Baptism, He

receives the Holy Spirit, and a voice from heaven declares, “You are My beloved Son.”

Beginning now, our Lord lives for us sinless under the Law of God as He does all the way to His

ultimate work of deliverance, shedding His blood on the cross. We take comfort that our Savior is

with us, right alongside, with His Word and Spirit to enable us to live holy lives by faith and with

the boldness of the cross, following Him. Our Baptism is for us the beginning of the new, eternal

life that unites us with God both now and forever.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING HYMN: “Light of Light, O Sole Begotten” LSB 914

INVOCATION

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God

our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us

forgiveness.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with

which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal

punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and

I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent,

bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and

merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant

of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the

command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

INTROIT

P: Behold my servant, whom I uphold,

C: my chosen, in whom my soul delights.

P: I will tell of the decree:

C: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.

P: Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,

C: and the ends of the earth your possession.

P: You shall break them with a rod of iron

C: and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

P: Now therefore, O kings, be wise;

C: be warned, O rulers of the earth.

P: Serve the Lord with fear,

C: and rejoice with trembling,

P: for his wrath is quickly kindled.

C: Blessèd are all who take refuge in him.

ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

P: Behold my servant, whom I uphold,

C: my chosen, in whom my soul delights.

P: Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River You proclaimed Him

Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized in

His name faithful in their calling as Your children and inheritors with Him of everlasting

life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy

Spirit, one God, now and forever.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Genesis 1:1-5

1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form

and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering

over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4

And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5

God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and

there was morning, the first day.

L: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE: Romans 6:1-11 1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means!

How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been

baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with

him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the

glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with

him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We

know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought

to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been

set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with

him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no

longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the

life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive

to God in Christ Jesus.

ALLELUIA

HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 1:4-11

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter.

John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism

of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all

Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river

Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a

leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached,

saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am

not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will

baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee

and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water,

immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him

like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I

am well pleased.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

About Holy Communion—The Lord’s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and

glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His

very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen

our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who

trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If

this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord’s table.

Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord’s Supper (I

Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in

the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you

would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord’s

Supper, please pick up a copy of “What is the Lord’s Supper?” at the Information

table in the entryway.

Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for

those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires gluten-

free wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service.

Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions.

In Holy Baptism, the Triune God Reveals

Himself and Recreates Us in His Image “In

the beginning, God created the heavens and

the earth” (Gen. 1:1). Then, as “the Spirit of

God was hovering over the face of the

waters” (Gen. 1:2), God spoke His Word:

“‘Let there be light,’ and there was light”

(Gen. 1:3). In the same way, “the beginning

of the gospel of Jesus Christ” (Mark 1:1)

brings about the new creation through the

waters of Baptism by the same Word and

Spirit of God. When John the Baptist came,

“proclaiming a baptism of repentance for

the forgiveness of sins,” Jesus also came

“and was baptized by John in the Jordan”

(Mark 1:4, 9). Although He had no sins of

His own, He took His stand with sinners in

His Baptism and took the sins and mortality

of the world upon Himself. He was

baptized into His own death, by which the

heavens are opened and the Spirit is given

to us. God the Father is well pleased with

His beloved Son and raises Him from the

dead. As we share His Baptism and are

“united with him in a death like his” (Rom.

6:5), we also share His resurrection unto

“newness of life” (Rom. 6:4).

snacks. Some of the meals are prepared by

groups but individuals are also needed.

Host/hostesses are needed to serve 5 hour

shifts for overnight supervision/security.

This is a labor of love as our “Social

Ministry” fund will be used to purchase all

the food. If you would like to donate to

that fund, checks can be made payable to

We are glad you are here! If there is a time during the Worship Service that you feel your child (or you) needs a “time out,” please feel free to

leave the service. If you leave the service, you can go to the lobby or use the large conference room across from the church office. The

conference room has speakers and one-way glass so you can still participate in Worship. During the Sunday school hour, (9:15am – 10:15am) and during the 10:30am worship service the nursery is staffed for children 0-3 years old. The nursery is in the preschool on the north end of the building. It is the first classroom on the left as you

enter the preschool parent lounge area. There are also speakers in the nursery so you can listen to the service.

Activity bags for young children to use are in the plastic tub outside the church office.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, WE OFFER THESE AND OTHER SERVICES: Large
