Together

Black Cloister Meetings

Join Pastor Love and fellow members in studying the Book of Concord from 5:00—6:45p.m. at the Black Cloister Brewing Company at 619 Monroe St., Toledo (Corner of Erie & Monroe). Bring your Book of Concord (if you have one) and your Bible. Copies of what we will be reading will be available if you don’t have a copy of the Book of Concord. You will be able to order dinner from an area restaurant and eat while you are studying. Our final session is August 28th—don’t miss it!

Bob & Kathy Harpel have donated a Chausible for Trinity in memory of Pastor Timothy Carr. Memorials have been given to the Howard Drager Scholarship Fund in memory of Michael Harrison (grandson of Henry Schaadt) and Bob French by Mike and Jean Thieroff.

Memorials have been given to the Trinity Altar Guild in memory of Ruth Klein by Ruth Haynes, and in memory of John Plock by his wife, Kathryn Plock. Memorials have been given to Trinity in memory of Bob French by: Richard & Leora Stainbrook, Carl & Carol Williams, Don & Joan Wilms, Jim & Polly Malohn, Dell & Chris, Roger & Ruth Ann Schlade. Memorials have been given to Trinity by Richard & Leora Stainbrook in memory of Victor Keller. Memorials have been given to the Trinity Lutheran School Music Program by the Dougherty Family, the Kunstmann Family, and the Eiben Family in memory of Joy A. Dougherty.

The first gifts that we read about in Scripture are the offerings made by Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. In Genesis 4:2-4 we read, “…Now Abel kept flocks and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.” Cain and Abel brought offerings or gifts for the Lord. Because one worked the land and the other raised animals, their gifts were different. We read that Cain “brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering,” whereas Abel “brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.” While Cain was not concerned about giving the first or best of his crop, Abel brought in his best in the “fat portions of the firstlings.”

God looked with favor upon Abel’s offering. God looked into the hearts of both Cain and Abel as He looks into our hearts. He saw Abel’s humble faith. By his gift, Abel showed his sincere gratitude for all that God had done for Him.

We need to understand that it’s not the size of our gifts and offerings which makes them acceptable to the Lord, but rather it is the attitude of our hearts and minds toward God. God wants our gifts to be an expression of our love for Him. He wants us to give cheerfully rather than grudgingly. He wants us to give out love through faith.

May this story of giving by Cain and Abel help us to examine our attitude toward giving. May God grant us all faithful, loving, and giving hearts.

Dear Trinity Family of Faith, When this August newsletter goes to print I will be on a vacation with my wife Ruth Ann, our children and their spouses, and grandchildren celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. I thank God for my loving wife, my best friend, my confidant. My weaknesses are her strengths, and her weaknesses are my strengths and together with Jesus, we have had a very good life. I thank God for her every day because He is our one true strength, our promise for salvation and eternal life. With that said, we will be missing church here at Trinity for two weeks. Keep us in your prayers and know we will keep you in ours during our absence from each other. So, why am I relating my private life to you all? It’s to get to a point of discussion. About a year ago we signed an electronic withdrawal form from Pat, our bookkeeper at church. The form allows us to make our weekly pledge from our bank account to Trinity Lutheran Church. It’s such a convenient way to make sure we show our appreciation to our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ for all His blessings to us and to make sure we keep our pledge promise up to date. With vacations and absences from worship, it’s so nice to know we are helping to keep the lights on at church and the AC going so we are all comfortable during services. It’s after all, one of the “Why’s” we are here. My point is, if you’re looking for a way to help keep things on a more even “keel,” it is really a nice way to do it. It’s a very easy thing to do. Just stop in the church office and give Pat the information, and she will take care of it. You can increase your giving at any time, and you can cancel it as well. All you have to do is remember to deduct it from your records each week. And, you save the expense of writing a check each week. On special services, like during Advent or Lent, we still write checks for those services, but we save the expense of about two full check pads per year (an added bonus). God bless you all as you consider all your blessings. God loves a cheerful giver and, as I’ve said in the past: “ He who gives while he lives, also knows where it goes.” May God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit be with you all until we return. In His Service Together, Roger Schlade, President Trinity Lutheran Church/School PH: 419.265.5626

FRIENDSHIP CIRLE NEWS

Friendship is a precious bond, so fragile, yet so strong It’s nurtured by our deeds, and thoughts, and soothes when things go

wrong.

Friendship is companionship: the joy of sharing fun, Of food, fellowship, and notes we send, that keep us on the run!

Friendship, also, shares the times when sorrows come our way. To have dear friends, who really care, makes “gray days” more less

gray!

Friendship never can be owned, or chained, or bought or sold. It’s a special freely-given to treasure, and to hold.

Friendship is a lovely gift; a special gift from God To bring us happy memories as life’s long path, we trod.

Mary B. Conn

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- The Friendship Circle is a group of friends who are members of Trinity (or their friends). We are not limited by age but because the group meets in the afternoon, the members tend to be retirement age. Lunch is either a meal at a local restaurant or one served in the Luther Room. The lunch is then followed by an event, such as a speaker, entertainment, celebration, games, or to an adventure off site from Trinity. Friendship Circle meets the second Thursday of the month, September through June. Each month's activity can be viewed in Trinity Lutheran's monthly newsletter or the weekly News and Notes. Mark your calendar: Thursday, September 8, 2016, as the new schedule of events begins! Baked Potato Bar (with all the toppings) and “Meet Trinity’s New Staff Members” is the program. More to follow next month! Please come!

LUTHERAN WOMEN’S MISSIONARY LEAGUE MITES and MISSIONS

LWML Mite Ingathering is Sunday, August 21st. Bring your gifts, whether they are coins or “quiet money” and place them into the large Mite Box in the narthex or near the gym door. Checks should be made payable to Trinity LWML. Our gifts for LWML missions totaled $99.50 in July. New Mission Grants for the 2016-2018 biennium were selected at the LWML Ohio

District Convention held in June and are listed in the article below.

LWML WOMEN MEET IN WEST CHESTER, OHIO The Twenty-sixth Biennial Convention of the LWML Ohio District has come to a close. The ladies of the Cincinnati Zone hosted the convention at the Cincinnati Marriott North Hotel, in West Chester, Ohio on June 24-26, 2016. The theme of the convention, It Only Takes a Spark was based on Luke 24:32. The convention was chaired by LWML Ohio District President, Ann Marie Bollas. The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), is the official women’s auxiliary of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. The LWML focuses on affirming each woman in her relationship with Jesus Christ to enable her to be in ministry among the people of the world. The organization has been encouraging and equipping women to live out their Christian lives in active mission ministries and to financially support global mission projects since July 1942. The ladies who attended were inspired and uplifted by their time at the convention. They accomplished the work of the Lord during the business meetings. They praised the Lord through singing and laughter. The ladies worshipped, prayed, and meditated (out loud) through Bible study and devotions. No one was “hiding under a bushel!” The ladies received greetings from LWML Vice President of Christian Life, Eden Keefe and from Ohio District LCMS President, Rev. Terry Cripe. Both commended the LWML Ohio District for their mission work and devotion to the Lord and encouraged us to continue in the work of the Gospel. They left us with the message to “Keep the Spark” alive as we return home after the convention and to “pass it on.” The Rev. Kristopher Whitby from St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mt. Prospect, Illinois, was the proclaimer at the Friday evening opening worship/communion service. He inspired us with his message on Luke 24:32. During the worship service, we also enjoyed music by the 40 plus voice convention choir. The banner procession by the zone presidents, each carrying a banner depicting the convention theme and made lovingly by ladies from their individual zone, was as beautiful as ever. Pastor Whitby stayed with us throughout the convention. He was also our humorist interrupter. Brad Bukowski, a.k.a. Pastor Whitby, brought us lots of laughter as “Brad” came to realize what LWML stands for, how and why we work and meet together. He also did mime, which we really enjoyed. The Rev. Keith Witte, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Liberty Center, Ohio, was the Bible study leader. He explained how to “Meditate Out Loud.” While reading selected scripture passages, including the theme verses, he led us to a better understanding of the Word and gave us the tools that will enable a closer relationship with our God. Our keynote speaker, Tim Hetzner, president of Lutheran Church Charities, Chicago, Illinois, told us the reasons why and how the Comfort Dog Ministry began. He showed us videos and pictures of the work that is being done through the Comfort Dog Ministry to bring comfort and show God’s love to those who are hurting. Entertainment provided by the Forest-Aires Women’s Chorus, Bhutanese Dancers (their thank you for having received an LWML grant some years ago), and the Juggler for Jesus, followed a delicious banquet meal. A highlight of the business meeting was the selection of ten mission grants totaling $92,500 for the 2016-2018 biennium:

Military Veterans and Family Member Counseling, Care Programs & Services $10,000 Ohio District Student Aid & Recruitment Committee (Seminarian Grant) $15,000 Concordia Theological Seminary Food Co-op $10,000 Ohio District Student Aid & Recruitment Committee (Church Worker Grant) $15,000 Veterans of the Cross (LCMS) $ 2,500 Project Hope for the Homeless, Painesville, OH $10,000 Ohio Branch Orphan Grain Train, Napoleon, OH $ 7,500 Sharing the Love of Christ with Detained Immigrants, Centers in Ohio and Kentucky $ 7,500 The Bridge Ministry, Prince of Peace Lutheran, Cincinnati $10,000 Comfort Dog Ministry “Anna”, Atonement, Columbus $ 5,000

Elected to office to serve for the next four years: Jeanne Schimmelmann, President; Julie Gresko, Vice President of Human Care; Beth Christopherson, Vice President of Servant Resources; Judy Sonnenberg, Financial Secretary; and Rev. Daniel Herb, Pastoral Counselor. Elected for the two year term on the nominating committee: Vivian Nelson, chairman; Barbara Berner; Eileen Stough; Jean Moffitt; & Gloria Schumm. The three offerings received at the convention were for: LWML Mites, $3,283.23; the Dressing Room, Ashland, Kentucky, $1,838.79; and $2,494.44 for Reaping the Harvest Ministries, Cleveland, Ohio. The LWML Ohio District Human Care Committee reported that during the servant events on Friday of the convention, mission dolls, cards of encouragement to missionaries serving throughout the world and tray cards to be used in Cincinnati area assisted living, rehabilitation or nursing home facilities were made by the ladies. Containers overflowed with the following items brought by those attending the convention: eye glasses, prescription bottles, braces, crutches and ace bandages, used paint and cancelled postage stamps. A prayer of dedication was led by the chairman of the Human Care Committee, asking God’s blessings on the giver and receiver of these recycled items. The opening and closing worship services, Bible study, prayers, songs of praise, speakers, and interest sessions featuring Ohio missions, encouraged all participants to “Keep Their Spark” lit for Jesus. The 2018 convention will be hosted by the Central Zone on June 22-24, 2018 at the Embassy Suites, Dublin, Ohio.

LWML Toledo Zone WORK DAY is scheduled for August 13, 2016 at Trinity, starting at 9:30. Bring a bag lunch. We will complete fleece blankets for Ronald McDonald House, quilts for Orphan Grain Train, mission dolls and witness bracelets for missionaries to take on their trips. We hope you will join us for fellowship. Bring scissors; a thimble; colored markers, small pieces of fabric, and/or glue sticks for the mission dolls. Thank you to Thrivent Financial for providing Action Team funds with which we were able to purchase fleece to make the blankets. Donations of 1.5 yard lengths of fleece will also be appreciated. Questions? Please call Grace at 419-893-6763 or Lillian at 419-893-2951.

To the saints of Trinity Lutheran Church, called to be the "Children of God" by Christ's Holy Spirit whom He graciously pours out upon us;

Greetings to you all in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! By the grace of God, I am your baptized brother in Christ, and it is in His service that I begin my time with you in prayer,

"Heavenly Father, continue to lead me and all your children in the way that we should go. Please bless me with fruitful labor among the saints at Trinity Lutheran Church this coming year, that I may serve them by Your Holy Spirit, so that we all might be fruitful and pleasing in Your sight. All this I ask in Your Holy Name and according to Your perfect will, made known to us through Your Son Jesus Christ, who died and yet now lives! Amen!"

Beloved in the Lord, as your baptized brother in Christ Jesus, I humbly come to you as one who is in constant need of Christ's Body and Blood, given and shed for us for the forgiveness of sins. And yet, I also come to you as one who has been called into Christ's service as a vicar under the administration and oversight of your Pastor, Rev. Mark Love, while under the supervision of the professors and staff of Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The practical training which I intend to receive this next year among you is designed to further my formation as one who seeks to serve Christ as a pastor in the Office of The Holy Ministry.

As Pastor Love's vicar for these coming twelve months, I shall serve in his stead as I teach the 6th grade Catechesis class, and the 7th grade Religion course at the school. I will also lead and preach during some of the non-communion services on Sundays and Wednesdays throughout the year.

I willingly and joyfully take on this task set before me in the hope that one day I may be ordained as a called minister of Christ to the saints throughout the world; for it is through God's service to the saints by means of His Office that I myself have been set free, and by which He sets us all free to be the children of God and fellow heirs of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I ask that you continue to pray with me, and for me, that I might continue to be formed into a mature man, according to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. All this I ask so that I may be of greater service to you and to all the saints as we, together, build up one another and the whole church of God according to His Love, which has been made known to us in and through His Son, our Crucified and Resurrected Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen!

Your Brother in Christ,

Vicar Zachary Thomas Viggers

ANNA’S COMFORT CORNER   Unrest in our Country:  I have been hearing about the devastating acts of violence that have been happening across our country.  It is hard to think of much else.  I am trying to visit police when I can.  I went to one of the Police in the Park events and to the memorial service for one of the Ottawa County police dogs.  I also participated in a walk to honor K‐9 Officer Falko who died in the line of duty last year.  Everywhere I go, we thank the officers for what they do and let them know that we are praying for them.  We also continue to pray for the victims of violence and for my Comfort Dog friends who have been deployed to various locations to offer prayer and comfort to those in need.    UTMC:  I would like to tell you about a 38‐year‐old friend of mine named Steve.  I met Steve’s mother (her name is Susan) at UTMC one day while she was waiting to see her son.  You see, Steve had to have one of his legs taken off and has some other health problems.  Susan and I visited for a while, then a week or so later she contacted me to set up a visit with her son.  I went to the hospital but Steve was so upset about his leg that he really didn’t want to see anyone.  A couple weeks later, my Top Dog received a call from one of Steve’s

nurses saying that he had been talking about a golden retriever.  This time Steve was feeling up to visiting with us.  We stayed for a long time, talking to and praying with Steve.  This was on a Thursday, and the following Monday, UTMC was giving me a party in the cafeteria.  Well, we decided right then and there that Steve should come to my party.  He had not yet been able to get into a wheelchair, so his nurse made it her mission to contact physical therapy and ask them to work with Steve all weekend to get him ready for the party.  He had a goal!  And you know what?  He made it!!  We were all so excited for him, Susan and many of my handlers even cried happy tears!  Now we get to visit Steve in the rehabilitation hospital.  I know he is going to be just fine and I’m so glad I am helping!

Party:  Last month was my birthday and I couldn’t have asked for a better party.  Thank you to everyone that made it happen and to my friends that came to celebrate with me.  I appreciate all of you!  I hope you had a good time – I know I did.

Restore us, O Lord God of hosts!  Let your face shine, that we may be saved.  Psalm 80:19

God’s Blessings, Anna Comfort Dog Psalm 62:8

GERMANY — AUGUST 16–31 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) began working with the Selbständige Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche (SELK), our partner church in Germany, in 1972. The two church bodies regularly work together to share the Gospel and bear Christ’s mercy to the least of these.
