On Monday 20th July our very excited year 5 students started their adventure to Ballarat at 6.15am. The students spent most of the week at Sovereign Hill learning about the historical events and the people who lived there in the 1850’s. The students spent two days in the costume school living the lives of students on the goldfields. They spent time learning to speak and act appropriately, how to sew, maintain a household and even made butter! Students watched the excellent sound and light show ‘Blood on the Southern Cross’ and learnt even more about the Eu-reka Stockade. The show was particularly interesting as students had been learning about the Goldfields and the Eureka Stockade throughout term 2, and were able to bring some background knowledge to what they saw. The students visited Ballarat Ceme-tery to see the graves of Peter Lalor, James Scobie and those who died in the battle of the Eureka Stockade. Principal CONNECT Mrs Cheryl Bartel

Thank you to all of our parents who responded to the Independent Schools Victoria LEAD School Opinion Survey. The distri-bution of the survey was also a test run of our new web based school management system, TASS. While there are still a few glitches to iron out, the migration of data seems to have been successful. During this semester we will prepare for the intro-duction of TASS Parent Lounge for 2016. This is a secure parent portal through which we will communicate to parents, per-sonal details can be checked and various permissions can be given, to name just a few of the features.

This is a busy term for the remaining year level camps as well as the year 1/2 concert and the year 3 to year 6 concerts. There are also many other activities for students as well as some for parents including the annual dress up Book Parade. All of these activities provide valuable learning experiences for the students whilst covering a broad range of curriculum areas.

We are pleased to announce that after a review by College Council of our sibling discount, the following discounts will apply from 2016: 2nd child = 20% (an increase from 10%); 3rd child = 50% (an increase from 15%); 4th child = 70% (an increase from 20%). We are an all inclusive College and we are currently preparing more detailed documents of what is included in the composite fee for each year level at the College. The Fees Policy and Charges for 2016 will be sent to families at the end of Term 3.

Our class devotion and chapel theme for this semester is people of faith and the spiritual values that they demonstrated. One text that sums up their faith and their absolute trust in God can be found in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, ”declares the Lord, “plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” We can often feel insecure about what God wants us to do and I remember when sharing this thought with an older, wiser teacher, he handed me a rosebud and told me to open it without tearing off any petals. What could this possibly have to do with wanting to know what God wanted for my life? I tried to unfold the rose but it was an impossible thing to do. He noticed my struggle and shared this poem with me:

It is only a tiny rosebud, a flower of God’s design; But I cannot unfold the petals with these clumsy hands of mine. The secret of unfolding flowers is not known to such as I. God opens this flower so sweetly, when in my hands they fade and die. If I cannot unfold a rosebud, this flower of God’s design, Then how can I think I have the wisdom to unfold this life of mine? So I’ll trust in Him for His leading each moment of every day. I will look to him for guidance each step of the pilgrim way. The pathway that lies before me, only my heavenly father knows. I’ll trust Him to unfold the moments just as he unfolds the rose.

Blessings Cheryl

Sean Choolburra Entertains @ Trinity On Wednesday 29th July Trinity students were treated to a dynamic and thoroughly entertaining presentation by Sean Choolburra, an Aboriginal performer. The prep to year 5 performance included traditional stories, artefacts and dances, and a couple of students even made fire! The year 6 to year 10 students had a different presentation and heard about many stories - often hilarious - from Sean’s life in a blend of music, dance and monologue. What a great way to learn more about indigenous culture! Here are some student reflections. “Today we watched a performance by a man called Sean. He has travelled all around Australia. He played a didgeridoo today and I liked it a lot because they were very old songs. We did ‘Gangnam Style’ and it was so funny because he did some cool moves. I had a really good time.” Lucy Kuhl (year 2) “Today an Aboriginal man came to TLC. His name was Sean. He was funny. He played the didgeridoo and made a fire with sticks. I loved the end of the show the most.” John Blake (year 2) “I thought he was a very funny man and had a great story to tell.” Kieren Robinson (year 9) “I thought that he was really good and he engaged with the audience well. His didgeridoo skills were amazing.” Livpreet Kaur (year 9)

Geographers Investigate the Farm

The year 9 students recently travelled to a farm in the Millewa to complete a geographical investigation of biophysical processes. The students explored how an understanding of these processes contributed to sustainable management as part of the Aus VELS unit on food security. Students completed a transect and a slope profile. They also took photos to illustrate the changing innovations in farming. The data gained on the excursion as well as research completed in the classroom were combined in the assessment task the students submitted. The students enjoyed getting out of the classroom even if it was a bit windy!

Project Ice Team Talks to Students

On the 4th of August, the year 9 & 10 students attended a presentation about the damaging effects that the drug ice has on our community. We had a member of the police come to speak to us, Patrick Bell, and a member of the Justice department, Vanessa Dyke, both of whom are part of Project Ice, a community awareness group. The meeting was very informative. We learnt how the drug can give us serious long and short term damages as well as how it can lead to personal tragedy and issues with the law. Perfect success! Earlier this year, many students from yr 7 to yr 10 participated in the Education Perfect Languages and Social Sciences com-petitions. Our students competed with students from around the world and were challenged to extend their knowledge of Italian and humanities topics through questions and quizzes. Trinity came 1st globally in our category for Languages and 1st in Victoria for our category in Social Sciences. In Languages, George Tryfonopoulos (yr6) achieved the highest point score in the school. In Social Sciences, Jack McGinty (yr9) received the Elite Award and an Education Perfect pin, the highest achieve-ment. We congratulate all of our students for their efforts in these competitions. The first of the ICAS competition results are being received by the school. Congratulations to our Digital Technologies and Science distinction students who were presented with their certificates last Monday on assembly.

Students Engineer FUN

Students’ engineering skills were put to the test as they were judged on their model bridge de-signs. Dr Timothy Wong has been visiting the Year 2 EnQuest group giving them tips on creating a sturdy bridge. Students used drinking straws to construct their bridges and there were many guidelines which the bridge must comply with.

Reflections on year 5 camp ... ‘I liked camp because it was cold and I liked mining and I also loved free time and coming back home!’ – Seb Stewart ‘In Ballarat we had to act like 1854 kids. We went gold panning. We went in 2 mines. It was awesome. It was a really good camp!’ – Harman Grewal ‘My favourite thing on camp was everything. It was so fun! But the thing I liked the best was the food!’ – Declan Brown ‘I really enjoyed going to the school. I thought it was fun! I also enjoyed doing red faces and that was also quite funny. Something I thought was annoying about camp was Mr Jackson singing every morning!’ – Isabel Oldham

6A Welcomes Tonya and Banjo

Tonya and her guide dog, Banjo, visited our school and spoke to us about the everyday routine of someone who is blind. She showed us a variety of implements that she uses on a daily basis. She shared with us stories about how she gets around the town and how she buys clothes. Banjo was provided by Seeing Eye Dogs Australia. We appreciated the opportunity to hear from Tonya.

Interschool Boys Football

On Wednesday 29th July, a team of boys from year 7 to year 10 participated in the Intermediate Boys Aussie Rules Championship at the Aerodome Ovals. Led by Jakob Heinrich, Paddy Keogh and Lewis Etherington, the boys played three tough 30 minute games against Irymple, Merbein and Coomealla College. The absence of points in the wins column didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the team. Throughout the day they approached each match with endeavour and tenacity displaying a supportive team first attitude.

Regional girls soccer

On Thursday 23rd July a very talented group of year 7s and 8 girls woke up bright and early (3:00am) to jump on a bus to Echuca to compete in the SSV Loddon Mallee Region Football (Soccer) Finals. Their first game and the first win was against Echuca College, who had home ground advantage. The girls started off strong with Julia scoring our first goal of the day. The team came back onto the field for their second game determined to make the Melbourne finals. Their dream was in reach when Hayley scored a goal against Bendigo Catholic College. Their finals hopes were alive and they were pumped. An unfortunate turn of events saw brave Lizzie facing a strong BCC striker in a penalty kick. It was now 1-1. The girls knew if they kept the scores even, percentages were in their favour and they would be heading to Melbourne. Even with the GREAT defensive line consisting of Ella, Phoebe, Eden and Claudia, a fantastic play from BCC allowed them to score their second goal. The girls worked hard and played strong all day.
