Participación 20%Participation includes coming to class prepared, being on time and staying until the end of the class, being respectful and, most importantly, actually speaking and engaging in the activities. If I do not see you using the language, I can not grade you. Attendance is part of the participation grade. Absences will only be considered excused if your professor received proper documentation.

Pruebas 20%There will be tests every Wednesday. All tests will be partial and based on the material covered. However, keep in mind that language builds on itself. Therefore material can reappear in tests. Tests will be done within Moodle, Socrative or on paper. In case of listening quiz, you need to bring headphones.

Orales 30%Some oral exercises will occur in class and others you will be able to do them from home. There will be four required presentations during the semester. Topics and all requirements will be posted on Moodle. At least one presentation will be a group exercise. Group members will evaluate each other.

Escritos 15%Escritos may include journals and essays. I will give you comments and offer ideas for making it better. These written exercises will be assigned and finished during class time.

Tareas 15%“Tareas” literally means “tasks”. They include, but are not limited to, grammar drills, vocabulary drills, online homework and more. “Tareas” will always appear on the left side of the chalkboard. Your professor may add tarea as she sees fit. 4

“Tareas” also include attendance to 2 cultural activities offered by different departments and organizations during the semester. After attending the event, you must turn in a 150-word reaction paper (typed and double-spaced) including your selfie during the event. You must turn in the paper WITHIN ONE WEEK OF ATTENDING THE EVENT during the time of the class. Your professor will offer suggestions of possible activities, but suggestions of any that interests you and seems relevant to the class are also welcome. Check calendar for due dates.

*** ALL GRADES WILL BE AVAILABLE ON MOODLE. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ASK ME ABOUT IT. IF YOU WISH TO TRACK YOUR PROGRESS, JUST CLICK “GRADES”.

** PARTICIPATION, ESSAYS, AND ANY CLASS ACTIVITY IS GRADED BY RUBRIC. RUBRICS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON MOODLE.

* ALTHOUGH THE FINAL GRADE IS CALCULATED USING PERCENTAGES, INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITIES ARE GRADED BY POINTS. POINTS ARE ADDED BY CATEGORIES.

PLAGIARISMTo really learn the language, you have to be honest with yourself. The main purpose of written exercises and homework is developing your skills by regularly practicing and getting immediate feedback. Assignments will be related to topics discussed in class. The level and length will vary from short and simple sentences at the beginning to longer and more advance vocabulary and grammar at the end. On papers and exams, doing your own work is absolutely essential.

You cannot cut and paste text from the internet or the textbook into your papers and pass it off as your own writing. You cannot turn in a paper that someone else has written or that you have bought or downloaded online. Plagiarized work is cheating and it is an automatic zero on the assignment and may cause you to fail the class. Please familiarize yourself with and follow the Trinity College policy on Intellectual Honesty in the Student Handbook. [http://www.trincoll.edu/sitecollectiondocuments/studenthandbook.pdf]

You may: Consult with your instructor during the office hours. Write notes or questions on your drafts about particular doubts or problems with expressions that you may have. Consult dictionaries and grammar reference sources. Use a Spanish spell checker (e.g. with a program such as Microsoft Word).

You may not: Ask a friend or your tutor to read your composition and correct the errors. Turn in a composition that translates your writing from English to Spanish. Use automatic translation devices from Internet or other sources (machine translation is easily identifiable).

NO PIERDAS LOS PUNTOSPlan ahead: Work must be submitted on the due date. I will not grant extensions or allow late submissions. This includes printing/sending after class on the same day it is due, which is not permitted. I am happy to read and comment on late work but it will not receive credit.

Pruebas cortas: Some quizzes will be announced, others will not. They will be administered at the very beginning of the class. There will be no make up quizzes. Therefore, make sure you are not late for class, and do not leave before the class ends. Should you be absent, make arrangements with your professor in advance.

MOODLEThe calendar, exams, quizzes and other activities will be ported on Moodle. Make sure you check it before coming to class and stay up to date with assigned tasks. Dates on the calendar are subject to change. Keep up with class announcements for more details.

GRAMMAR VIDEOSRegularly, your professor will post grammar videos on Moodle or assign them on Connect. You are responsible for watching these videos before class. You may be quizzed or your professor may ask you to use this grammar during class time.

CELLPHONES, COMPUTERS AND TABLETSYour professor is tech friendly. You may use cellphones, computers and tablets as long as it is connected to class. Should your professor find you texting, twittering, snapchatting, facetiming… this privilege will be revoked for everybody in the class, and your participation grade will be lowered a full grade.

Important informationACCOMMODATIONS

Trinity College and your professor comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. If you have a documented disability and require academic accommodations, please present your accommodations letter during my office hours within the first week of the term. If you do not have a letter but have a disability requiring academic accommodations, or if you have questions about applying for academic accommodations, please contact Lori Clapis, Coordinator of Accommodation Resources, at 860-297-4025 or at [email protected].

HELP & RESOURCESIf you are feeling lost or overwhelmed...

1. Speak up in class.

You may not be the only person with the same question, concern, issue, stress… and we all benefit from working questions out together. Don’t be shy. Language is all about sharing and speaking.

2. Make an appointment with your professor.

You are welcome to email or sign up for an appointment to meet during my office hours, or better yet: just drop in. Can’t make it to office hours? No problem, just let me know and we will set up a different meeting time. Many questions and issues can be easily resolved this way. I understand sometimes you need a more personalized help, and I will be there for you.

3. Use Moodle.

On our webpage, I will post useful online resources, including practice exercises, videos and much more. Check daily. Some assignments and reviews will also be posted there. Syllabus disappeared? No worries, there will be a copy of it there too.

4. Use Hartford and Trinity!

Have you noticed how many Spanish-speakers are around you? Dare to speak with them. And bring your questions to class. We can talk about your interactions. There is much to learn outside of the book and the classroom. Watch Spanish TV, listen to Spanish singers, read Spanish newspapers, drink a Spanish coffee… Dare to see all that’s around you!

TUTORS

Need some extra help?

There are tutors available. Most are Spanish majors or minors. Some are native speakers. Ask your professor to pair you with one. This is a free service. All you need to do is set up the time with the tutor.
