IntroductionItismypleasuretowelcomeyoutoTrinityCollegeDublinandtheMScinGlobalHealthclassforthisacademicyear.Theaimofourprogrammeistohelpstudentsfromarangeofbackgroundstofurthertheirskillsincriticalthinking,analysisandresearch,inordertoaddresstheproblemsassociatedwithGlobalHealth,particularlyinlowincomecountries.Webelievethatthiscourse,withitsuniqueblendofSocialandHealthScienceperspectives,willequipyouwiththeskillstocontributetoimprovinghealthsystemsandhealthpracticelocallyandinternationally.OneofmyresponsibilitiesasCourseDirectoristoassisteachofyoutosuccessfullycompletethisprogramme.Pleasecontactmeoranyothermemberofstaffifyourequireanyinformationorassistanceduringthecourseofyourstudies.Ilookforwardtoyourparticipationandcontributionandwishyoutheverybestinthecomingyear.Thishandbookisanindispensablereferencedocument.Iencourageyoutoreaditcarefully–itcontainsanswerstomanyofyourquestions.Inaddition,thehandbook:
• SetsoutthedetailsofyourMSc.programmeandwillhelpyoufindyourwayaroundthechoicesthatareavailabletoyou;
• Containsessentialinformationaboutprocessesandproceduresthatneedtobefollowedifyouaretoderivemaximumbenefitfromstudyinginthisprogramme;
• DescribeswhatplagiarismisandhowtoavoiditbyreferencingappropriatelyusingtheAPAsystem;
• Liststhemembersoftheteachingstaff,andindicateswheretheyaretobefoundandhowtheycanbecontacted.
Asafull-timegraduatestudent,theUniversityofDublinTrinityCollegeexpectsyoutobestudyingforabout35-40hoursperweekoveratleastthe30weeksoftermtime.TheCentreforGlobalHealthexpectsyoutoparticipateintheMastersinGlobalHealthDegreeProgrammeonthatbasis.Ourexpectations,insettingandassessingwork,arebasedontheassumptionthatyouwillbeputtingthatmucheffortintoyourstudies.Wewillexpectyoutobeavailableforlearningopportunities,tutorialsandothercentre/universityactivitiesthroughoutthenormalworkingweek(9.00amto5.00pm,MondaystoFridays).Youmayalsosometimesbeexpectedtoundertakeindependentstudyduringuniversityvacations.Asapostgraduatestudent,youwillfindonlyasmallproportionofyourworkingweektimetabledforattendanceatlectures,seminarsorotherformallearningopportunities.However,weexpectyoutoundertakefurtherhoursofindependentstudyoneachofthestudymodules.Someofthatindependentstudytimewillneedtobespentoncompletingsettasks–preparingforclass/seminardiscussions,writingcourseworkessaysandpreparingworkforformalassessment.Theremainderisintendedforyoutoreadwidelyonthesubjectsyouarestudying,guidedbythebooklistsprovidedbystaff.Toachieveagoodunderstandingofyoursubjects,anddowellinformalassessments,youareexpectedtoreadwidelyaswellasparticipatefullyinthelearningopportunitiesoffered.You

areexpectedtomakefulluseofthevastresourcesavailableinlibraryandthroughotherresources.Wehopeyouwillfindthecombinationofformallearning,guidedreadingandgroupworkthatisatthecoreoftheMSc.Programmeuseful.Attendanceatlectures,seminarsandotherlearningopportunitiesisimportantinordertomakethebestuseofyourtimeontheprogramme.Youshouldaimfor100%attendanceatalltimetabledlearningopportunities.Pleasenotethatattendanceismonitoredthroughouttheyear.Inlectures,seminars,andstudygroupsyouareexpectedtoparticipateactivelyandmakeacontributiontobenefityourselfandthatofotherstudents.Thediversityofstudents’backgroundistoensurethattheybenefitmaximallyfromsharingexperiencewiththemselvesandwithstaffontheprogramme.Formostofthelecturesessions,youwillberequiredtodosomepreparatoryreadingand/orleadinadiscussionorotherexercise.Inallsessions,youwillbeexpectedtobeanactivecontributor.Itisimportantthatyoucometosuchsessionswellprepared–failuretodosocanimpairthequalityoflearningforotherstudents,aswellaslimitingwhatyoupersonallygain.Finally,whilstwerecognisethatitmaybefinanciallynecessaryforyoutoundertakesomepaidworkduringyourtimeherewewanttoensurethatitdoesnotimpactadverselyonyouracademicstudies.Wethereforeadvisethatfull-timestudentsshouldnotundertakemorethan15hoursperweekofpaidworkoverthecourseoftheacademicyear.Again,IwarmlywelcomeyoutotheMScGlobalHealthclassandlookforwardtoanexcitingandstimulatingyearahead.Ihopeyouwillmakegooduseofalltheinformationprovidedinthishandbookandthatyourperiodofstudyonthisprogrammewillbebothenjoyableandsuccessful.Prof.ShaneAllwrightCourseDirector

termforstudentstodeliberateonissuesthataffectthemontheprogramme.TheywillalsoberesponsibleforrepresentingtheclassduringCourseCommitteeandCourseExecutiveCommittee.Ifagroupofstudentswishestoraiseaconcernthataffectstheclasstheyshoulddothisthroughtheirclassrepresentative,whowillinturndiscusstheissuewiththeCourseDirectororCourseAdministrator.
StudentFeedbackStudentsshouldalwaysfeelfreetogivefeedbackdirectlytotheCourseDirectorandtherestoftheteam.Studentswillalsohavetheopportunitytoprovideconstructivefeedbacktoimprovetheprogrammeattheendofeachmodule.StudentfeedbackistakenseriouslyandisperceivedasvitaltothefuturedevelopmentofthisMScprogramme.Theseevaluationsareanalysedanddiscussedbyteachingstaffatcoursecommitteemeetingsduringtheyear.Studentsshouldbeawarethatevaluationsareusednotonlybythosedirectlyinvolvedinteachingontheprogramme,butmayalsobeusedbytheSchoolforstaffappraisalorinqualityassuranceexercisesoraspartoftheacademicpromotionsprocedure.

ProgrammeOverviewTheMScinGlobalHealthprogrammeaimstoprovidegraduateswithagreaterappreciationoftheglobalinterconnectednessofhealthproblemsandtoequipthemwitharangeofanalyticalandmethodologicalskillstoaddressthechallengesofglobalhealth.Designedforindividualsfromawiderangeofdisciplinesandprofessions,theprogrammeadoptsamultidisciplinaryapproachthatintegrateshealthandsocialscienceperspectivestoanalyse,design,implementandevaluatehealthprogrammeswithinaglobalcontext.Globalhealthisanareaforstudy,research,andpracticethatplacesapriorityonimprovingandachievingequityinhealthforallpeopleworldwide.Globalhealthemphasisestransnationalhealthissues,determinants,andsolutions;involvesmanydisciplineswithinandbeyondthehealthsciencesandpromotesinterdisciplinarycollaboration;andisasynthesisofpopulationbasedpreventionwithindividuallevelclinicalcare(Koplanetal.2009).∗TheMScinGlobalHealthaugmentstraditionalapproachestopublicandinternationalhealthbybringingtogetherperspectivesandinsightsfromarangeofhealthandsocialsciencesinunderstandingandresolvingthechallengesofglobalhealth.Theseproblemsmayarise,forexample,inreliefanddevelopmentprogrammesindevelopingcountries;inconflictandpost-conflictsituations;withrefugees,asylumseekersandeconomicmigrants;withtouristsandbusinesstravellers.Allcountriesgiverisetoinequitiesinhealth,wealth,educationandhumanrights,andtheinterconnectednessoftheseissueswillbeamajorthemerunningthroughoutthecourse.Thecoursealsolaysemphasison‘local'experiencesthatresonategloballyinthecaseofIreland.TheseincludetheinfluenceofpovertyandrapidsocialchangeonhealthandidentityinIreland;migrationandrefugeewelfare,theconsequencesofethnicconflict,thepeaceprocessandthechallengesofreconciliationforcreatinginclusivehealthservices.Thestrongestemphasiswithinthecourseisonhealthin‘developing’countriesandtheimpactofglobalisation.
ProgrammeLearningOutcomesTheoverallaimofthecourseistoequipstudentswiththeanalyticalandmethodologicalskillstoaddressthemultifacetedchallengesofglobalhealthwhethertheyareinhigh-incomeorlow-incomecountries.Onsuccessfulcompletionofthisprogrammegraduateswillbeableto:
1. Demonstrateknowledgeofcurrentperspectivesandinsightsfromarangeofhealthandsocialsciencestounderstandthebroaderandinterconnectingcausesoftheworld’shealthproblemsandinequities,andbeabletoproposeviablesolutions.
2. Applyarangeofanalyticalandmethodologicalskillstoaddressthemultifacetedchallengesofglobalhealthinanethicallyresponsiblemannerandtocontributeonabroaderscaletothedesign,implementationandevaluationofhealthprogrammes.

3. Applyknowledge,handlecomplexityandmakeevidenceinformeddecisions,
individuallyandingroups,whenfacedwithinevitablehealthchallengescreatedbydiversesettings,byutilisingleadershipandotherskills.
4. Effectively,andboldly,communicatethrougharangeofmediaandaudiences,andefficientlytakeresponsibilitytocompletecomplexhealthrelatedactivitiesindividuallyandingroups.
5. Demonstratetheessentialknowledge,skillsandcapacityforself-directedlearningtoadvanceprofessionallyinthefieldofglobalhealththroughfurtherstudyorworkincountriesatanylevelofdevelopment.

TeachingandLearningStrategiesTheprogrammeadoptsthefollowingmethodstofacilitateteachingandlearningamongparticipants:
• Teachingbasedonevidencefromcurrentresearch• Alearningmethodologythatstressesactiveparticipationofstudentsand
acknowledgementandutilizationofthevariedexperiencethateachparticipantbringstothecourse
• Teambasedlearningandteachingthatreflectstherealityinwhichpeopleworkintheglobalhealtharena
• Anassessmentstrategythatallowsstudentstodirectbothindividualassignmentsanddissertationstotheirowncareerinterestsandprofessionaldevelopment
• Anassessmentstrategywhichencouragesstudentstodevelopcriticalappraisal,analyticalandmethodologicalcapabilitiestoaddressthechallengesofglobalhealth
• Arangeofstrategiesthatencouragesself-directedlearningandindividualownershipandutilizationoflearningopportunities.
Studentsareexpectedtobeactiveinchartingthedirectionoftheirlearningandutilizationofavailablelearningopportunities.Basedontheabove,theteachingandlearningmethodsinclude:Self-DirectedStudySelf-directedstudyisamajorcomponentofthecourse.Withthismethod,participantsareencouragedtoutilizethewiderangeoflearningresourcesattheirdisposal,someofwhichareintroducedatthebeginningofthecourse.Studentsareadvisedtosetasidestudytimeeachweek,ideallyonThursdayandFridayswhichmaybelecturefreedays.Asassessmentisongoingthroughouttheyear,studentsneedtobedisciplinedinorganisingtimeforwritingassignments.Somestudytimehasbeenscheduledintothetimetable.Thisisprimarilytoallowstudentstosourcematerialinthelibrariesandworkinstudygroups.FormalLecturesThesefacilitateorientationtotopicsandissuesandpresentationofrelevantupdatedinformationandspecializedknowledgeinanorganizedmanner.AttheMasterslevel,lecturesprovideusefulbackgroundinformationthataidcriticalassessmentofmodulematerialsandself-directedlearning.InteractiveLecturesandDiscussionsThisisasituationwherethemodulecoordinatororamemberoftheclassleadsinthediscussionofissues,whichwereraisedduringpresentations.Participantsareencouragedtointeractandsharetheirknowledgewithothersinthegroup.Thisprovidesanopportunitytoexplorethevariedexperienceofparticipantswithinthegroup.SeminarsandPresentationsSeminarsandpresentationsgiveparticipantstheopportunitytoinvestigatetopicsandpresenttheirfindingstotherestofthegroup.Theyareusefulinthattheyenableparticipantsacquire

ProgrammeAssessmentStudentsontheMScprogrammeareassessedbyacombinationof:
a) Continuousassessmentsand/orwrittenassignmentssubmittedforallregisteredmodulesthroughouttheprogramme.TheoverallMScgradewillbeanarithmeticmeanacrossthethreeterms.GradesreceivedfromallmodulestakeninTerm1willform35ECTSoftheoverallassessmentfortheawardoftheMSc.InTerm2,studentsmusttakethreecompulsorymodulesandtwomodulesfromtheavailableoptions.ThetotalobtainablemarksfromTerm2moduleswillalsoform25ECTSoftheoverallassessmentfortheawardoftheMSc.Allmodulesmustreceiveatleastapassgrade(i.e.50%)forastudenttoqualifyfortheawardoftheMSc.
b) Aresearchdissertationofaminimumof10,000andamaximumof15,000wordsin
length.Thegradereceivedforthedissertationwillform30ECTSoftheoverallassessmentoftheMSc.
CriteriaforAwardofMasterswithDistinctionThepassmarkforallelementsis50%.Studentsmaybepermittedtore-submitafailedassignment,inwhichcasethemaximummarkthatcanbeawardedis50%.Compensationbetweenmodulesisnotpermitted.Assessmentoftheresearchprojectwillbebysubmissionofadissertationofamaximumof15,000words.Part-timestudentsmustachieveaminimummarkof50%ineachmoduleinthefirstyearinordertoproceedtothesecondyear.ToqualifyfortheawardoftheM.Sc.degree,studentsmustpassalltaughtmodulesamountingto60creditsandachieveapassintheresearchproject/dissertation.InordertobeawardedtheM.Sc.withDistinction,studentsmustachieveadistinctionfortheresearchdissertationandobtainanoverallcredit-weightedaveragemarkforthecourseof70%orabove.Studentswhohavepassedtaughtmodulesamountingto60creditsbutwhodonotproceedto,orwhofail,theresearchproject/dissertation,maybeawardedthePostgraduateDiplomainGlobalHealth.Suchstudentswho,inaddition,achieveanoverallaveragemarkofatleast70%maybeawardedthePostgraduateDiplomawithDistinction.ADistinctioncannotbeawardedifastudenthasfailedanycreditduringthecourse.IMPORTANT:Allrequiredassignmentsmustbesatisfactorilycompletedbeforestudentsareallowedtosubmitthedissertation.Ifthestudentfailstosatisfactorilycompleteanyoftheregisteredmodulesintheprogramme,theycannotqualifyfortheawardoftheMSc.

AssignmentAssessmentandFeedback
ExplanationofECTSWeightingTheEuropeanCreditTransferandAccumulationSystem(ECTS)isanacademiccreditsystembasedontheestimatedstudentworkloadrequiredtoachievetheobjectivesofamoduleorprogrammeofstudy.Itisdesignedtoenableacademicrecognitionforperiodsofstudy,tofacilitatestudentmobilityandcreditaccumulationandtransfer.TheECTSistherecommendedcreditsystemforhighereducationinIrelandandacrosstheEuropeanHigherEducationArea.TheECTSweightingforamoduleisameasureofthestudentinputorworkloadrequiredforthatmodule,basedonfactorssuchasthenumberofcontacthours,thenumberandlengthofwrittenorverballypresentedassessmentexercises,classpreparationandprivatestudytime,laboratoryclasses,examinations,clinicalattendance,professionaltrainingplacements,andsoonasappropriate.Thereisnointrinsicrelationshipbetweenthecreditvolumeofamoduleanditslevelofdifficulty.TheEuropeannormforfull-timestudyoveroneacademicyearis60credits.1creditrepresents20-25hoursestimatedstudentinput,soa10-creditmodulewillbedesignedtorequire200-250hoursofstudentinputincludingclasscontacttime,assessmentsandexaminations.ECTScreditsareawardedtoastudentonlyuponsuccessfulcompletionoftheprogrammeyear.Progressionfromoneyeartothenextisdeterminedbytheprogrammeregulations.Studentswhofailayearoftheirprogrammewillnotobtaincreditforthatyeareveniftheyhavepassedcertaincomponent.Exceptionstothisruleareone-yearandpart-yearvisitingstudents,whoareawardedcreditforindividualmodulessuccessfullycompleted.

ResearchDissertationGuidelinesThesubmissionofaresearchdissertationisamajorrequirementfortheawardoftheMScdegreeinGlobalHealth.Theaimofthedissertationistodevelopindependentanalyticalthoughtonachosentopic,throughastudyinvolvingacriticalinvestigationofaphenomenonrelevanttoglobalhealth.UponcompletionofthetaughtcomponentoftheMScGlobalHealth,studentswillundertakeandcompleteaprogrammeofresearchleadingtothewritingandsubmissionofadissertation.Thedissertationmaybewrittenfollowingresearchand/orfieldplacementwithgovernmentdepartments,internationalagenciesandcivilsocietyorganisationsinIrelandorelsewhere.Adissertationmayalsobewrittenintheformofasystematicreview.Onsuccessfulcompletionoftheresearchcomponent,studentswillbeableto:• Independentlyplanandconductaglobalhealth-relatedresearchprojectinadomestic
