A short informative illustrated booklet on the Trinity Bellwoods Businesses
Citation preview
Trinity Bellwoods on Dundas Street -Do West- is within the beating heart of downtown Toronto.
Our neighbourhood retains an original, small street ambiance combined with a pioneering spirit, best appreciated by walking to uncover all its delights.
The street is home to a blend of family owned businesses and a burgeoning number of boutique businesses whose owners are connoisseurs in their field. Both old and new residents love the relaxed friendly environment. Locals in the know have long appreciated the wealth of amenities on the street which allow them to shop for all their daily needs. Social history, multicultural influences and independent spirit all converge in this dynamic, ever-changing neighbourhood, reflecting many of the positive attributes of Toronto and Canadian culture. Throughout the year, we host regular events with a unique focus that encompass the street and community.
Moored between Trinity Bellwoods Park to the west (ourbeloved downtown escape) and busy Bathurst street, Do West feels just off the beaten path. Culinary joy abounds with high and low flavours. You don’t have to go far to find a zingy cocktail or the right brew, be it coffee or beer and the perfect little place to savour it. Specialty shops and a vanguard of Canadian design businesses offer more to discover. Everywhere, you will meet locals who are passionate about their wares and eager to share their knowledge.
With guide in hand, explore the area and take note of all we
have to offer… Do send us a note!
INTRODUCTION:
A street full of small businesses with highly independent, refined visions, Do West offers many vital local experiences.
This compact community of owner/operators are invested in their vision while also understanding the pedigree of their neighbourhood, placing value on long term personal relationships with locals and visitors alike.
Do West as a street and community has gathered together both old and new by embracing the diverse, the creative, the quirky and the seriously good.

rinity Bellwoods Park is home to the
infamous white squirrel. Even though
most of us would like to believe
there is just one, there are in fact
several exploring the park, resident
back gardens and decks. Aside from
the regular white squirrel, we also
have many albino squirrels which can
be spotted by their red eyes. White
morphs are Eastern Grey Squirrels
with a white coat; a rare genetic
trait. Due to the lack of predators
in urban areas, the white squirrel
has been able to multiply in relative
safety.
T
Dundas Street wasn’t always one continuous
thoroughfare. Its many twists and turns are
the result of joining many smaller, parallel
but unconnected streets. The stretch of
Dundas Street that runs from Ossington to Bathurst, was
originally called Arthur Street. Post 1910, Dundas Street
West, coupled with the laying of new track for streetcars,
saw its emergence as a major artery, spanning the city from
east to west.
“ DO DESIGN IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO DIP INTO VENUES AND
EXPLORE THE STREET AS A GALLERY, ENGAGING WITH NOT
ONLY DESIGN, BUT MORE OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AS
YOU GO.”
Plan to visit a Public Opening Reception; hosted by
several storefronts along the street or plan to take part
in the Walk and Talk Sunday Tour for insider knowledge
of the area, with specific insights into the designs on
show. Pick up a map guide from participating venues
and enjoy Do Design exhibits at your own pace- day
or night.
As an integral part of Toronto design week,
Do Design highlights design culture in our
vibrant neighbourhood. For four days in
January, storefronts on Dundas St, from
Bathurst to Grace, will become temporary
showcases for the work of contemporary
designers.
Labeled as a “not to miss” event during
design week, this annual event is free.
Do Design is an opportunity to dip into
venues and explore the street as a gallery,
engaging with not only design, but more of
the neighbourhood as you go. This enjoyable,
communal aspect provides context for the
work and highlights the diversity of the
neighbourhood through a surprising array
of venues. As a unique event, each year
brings a new, refreshing and contemporary
design exhibit.

L Visitors to the neighbourhood love shopping
local because we have it all! Our stretch of
Dundas West is home to Canadian owned
and operated businesses from world famous
to mom & pop, gourmet to grocer, personal
wellness to pampering. Resident creative chefs,
designers and artists all contribute making
the street the go to place for handcrafted and
locally made goods.
With an ethos that thinks outside the big box,
the individual small businesses of Trinity
Bellwoods on Dundas tailor the differences
in their goods and services while building
relationships with their customers. Shop
local and sustain this distinct approach.
For the month of May, as part of the Scotiabank Contact
Photography Festival, the street hosts a quirky, snapshot
style photography exhibit. Do Photo has established itself
as the most friendly event around! All along the street,
in over 60 businesses, you can view images chosen to fit
a neighbourhood theme.
Do Photo: Nostalgia featured images from the Toronto
Archive alongside pictures from businesses illustrating
their own history on the street.
A recent theme: Urban Animal, featured pets and pests
proudly displayed in store front windows.
Enjoy a stroll along the street and let your curiosity take over.
Hmm what will next year’s theme be? Come by in May to
find out.
