“He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Isaiah 53:5

Charity has become a lucrative and ever expanding business in our country. From television benefits for victims of international disasters to the local donation buckets at stop lights, we are invited (or inundated) with pleas to help others. Don’t misunderstand me, as followers of Christ we are supposed to be ever eager and active in our efforts to aid and assist others in their troubles. Yet, have you paused recently to consider the larger reason for our charitable lifestyle? Have you grappled with the core motivation and inspiration for the good we seek to do for the benefit of others?

All our giving, all our caring, all our serving, all our sacrificing is designed to originate in Jesus Christ, flow from Jesus Christ, and seek the spread of the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Charity finds is mission and motive and means in Jesus Christ. Perhaps you are thinking this is a massive claim I’m making with a warehouse full of assumptions. How is it that one man’s life, and especially one man’s death, is the cause and catalyst of every act of charity? This challenge is particularly powerful when we consider that Jesus lived and died almost 2000 years ago.

In the verse above, do you see and hear the unearned, undeserved charity that is showered over us in the piercing, crushing, punishing wounds endured by Jesus Christ. His piercing was for our guilty state before God. His crushing was for our sinful heart. His punishment was for our peace before a Holy God. His wounds are the means of our healing, total healing…body, mind, and spirit. Or consider the words of the Apostle Paul, “…God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ…” (2 Corinthians 5:19) Jesus Christ is uniquely different and significant. Jesus Christ is God’s personified and active charity toward us. This makes Jesus Christ eternally relevant in every age and every situation in every person’s life. Further, as those whose lives are gripped by the grace of Christ, we are now positioned as God’s agents (ambassadors, ministers, servants, voice, etc.) of His Good News to the world.

During this reflective and repentant season of Lent, contend in your heart and mind with the glorious gift of God to you in Jesus Christ. And as the pains and problems of the world are splashed before your eyes on the television or collide with the comfort of your own home, know that Jesus Christ is adequate to meet every need, wipe every tear, mend every heart, and thwart every evil. That is the triumphant message of Easter in Christ’s cry, “It is finished!” That is the compelling call upon our lives as Christ’s people, to declare and demonstrate to the world, “It is finished.”

evangelism. . .

The Evangelism Committee would like to deeply thank the congregation for welcoming our guests to the February 15 worship service and visitor reception. It is so exciting to see each of us carrying out Trinity’s vision statement, which proclaims, “We are a welcoming church family, developing disciples who joyfully minister to others in the name of Christ.” Please continue inviting others to join us during this Lenten season for the many events and services surrounding Easter Sunday. Visitor gift bags are located in the narthex. If you are sitting next to a visitor or if you bring a guest, please feel free to give them a bag that includes a welcome gift and information about our church and our faith.

Planned giving. . .

The sounds of children marching as they act out the battle of Jericho;

The faces of young adults with autism creating their own art;

The laughter of a group of Sew’n’Sews collaborating on making healing blankets;

The clatter of dishes in the kitchen as the Fellowship Committee sets out a WoW potluck;

The grunts of exertion as rolling carts filled to overflowing with decorated shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child are wheeled into Fellowship Hall;

The delighted squeals of tiny children in the church nursery;

The beauty of a choir anthem being practiced;

The kidding around of a group of teens as they prepare bags of information

and a cross for our visitors;

The cheerful conversation, in Spanish, of a group of Hispanic moms;

The dulcet tones of hand bells as the children and the adult hand bell choir practice together…

These are just some of the sounds by which we can experience the ministry of Trinity as we stroll through the halls at various times. We all share the blessings we’ve received

through God to make this – and other – work happen. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Sunday, March 22 we will welcome Lisa Longo, Ministry Relations Officer of the Presbyterian Foundation, who will acquaint us with ways we can continue to support the mission of Trinity Presbyterian Church for the generations that follow after our earthly lives are concluded. Please join us in the Parlor after the 11 a.m. worship service for a brief informational session to hear how we can provide for Trinity in our wills and other ways that may also bring some tax advantage. Light refreshments will be served.

Remember the Christmas Bake & Craft Sale about three months ago? TPW has provided benevolences of $300 to each of the following charities as a result of your involvement:

More funds will be disbursed later in the year. As always, thanks for your involvement! Remember the Boo-Boo Babies our group Sew ‘n Sews have made? We continue to receive positive news from Wellstone Regional Hospital in Jeffersonville, IN about how much the nurses and patients appreciate them. The kids at the hospital haven’t seen anything like them before, and recognize them as soft and cuddly with interesting, attractive faces. The nurses have used the dolls not only to comfort, but also to gain cooperation from their young patients. One story was shared with us about an autistic child who had used markers to draw all over his body. The nurses were trying to get the child to take a shower, yet he patently refused to do so. A Boo-Boo Baby was presented as a reward should the child take that shower. Without hesitancy, the child went right into the shower in order to earn that doll. We will continue to make Boo-Boo Babies during 2015 for Wellstone. If you would like to stitch a few together, your help would be welcome. Pieces are already cut, and instructions are ready. In only four straight seams the first steps in crafting the dolls can be done. From there, we will pen the faces, stuff with poly-fill, and hand stitch the dolls closed. Please see Glenna Ogle, Sandra Hollensead or any Sew ‘n Sew gal to get started! Remember Special Events Schedule

• Support Services reported that there have been some recent instances where the church was found unlocked. Those with keys are reminded to lock doors when leaving the facility, take time to check the door handles and the doors to make sure they are secure when locking the church. Safety and security is everyone’s job.

• There was an overview of the 2015 budget at the recent congregational meeting. In the near future, copies of the budget will be available to the congregation with an avenue available for questions and answers.

• Special thanks to attendees at the 9am worship service on Sunday, February 22nd, Support Services and other members of the congregation for quickly addressing the rupture pipe in the area to the left of the front of the sanctuary. The leak was caught early and minimal damage is anticipated.
