Safety Information

2 Safety Information

This set is to operate on a 220-240V ACsupply only. Take care not to connect toomany appliances to the same power socketas this could result in fire or electric shock.

For environmental and safety reasons, it isrecommended that the TV is not left ifstandby when unused. Disconnect from themains. However, some TVs may havefeatures which need the TV to be left instandby to work correctly. The instructionsin this manual will inform you if this applies.

Never push objects of any kind into the setas this could result in a fire or electric shock.Never spill liquid of any kind on the set. Ifany liquid or solid object does fall through,do not operate the TV. Have it checkedimmediately by qualified personnel.

Do not open the cabinet and the rear coverof the TV. Refer to qualified servicepersonnel only.

To prevent fire or shock hazard, do notexpose the TV to rain or moisture.

For your own safety, do not touch any partof the TV, power lead or aerial lead duringlightning storms.

Do not cover the ventilation openings of theTV. For ventilation, leave a space of at least10cm all around the set.

Never place the TV in hot, humid orexcessively dusty places. Do not install theTV where it may be exposed to mechanicalvibrations.

Clean the screen and cabinet with a soft,lightly dampened cloth. Do not use any typeof abrasive pad, alkaline cleaner, scouringpowder or solvent, such as alcohol orbenzine, or antistatic spray. As a safetyprecaution, unplug the TV before cleaning it.

Pull out the power lead by the plug. Do notpull on the power lead itself.

Take care not to place heavy objects on thepower lead as this could result in damage.We recommend you wind any excess leadaround the holders provided on the rear ofthe TV.

Unplug the power lead before moving theTV. Avoid uneven surfaces, quick steps orexcessive force. If the set has beendropped or damaged, have it checkedimmediately by qualified service personnel.

Do not cover the ventilation openings of theTV with items such as curtains ornewspapers etc.

Do not place any objects on the TV. Toprevent fire, keep inflammable objects ornaked lights (e.g. candles) away from the TV.

Place the TV on a secure stable stand. Neverattempt to move the TV and stand together -always move the TV and stand separately.Do not place the TV on its side or face up. Donot allow children to climb on to it.

Follow steps 1 - 8 to install the TV and view programmes

Check that you have the following items:

• Always observe the correct polarity when inserting batteries.• Please dispose of batteries in an environmentally friendly way.• Do not use old or different types of batteries together.• To avoid battery leakage and damage to the remote control, remove the

batteries if you are not going to use the remote for several days. If any liquid that has leaked from the batteries touches you, wash it away immediately with water.

1. Connect your aerial lead to the socket labelled DIGITAL on the rear ofthe TV.

2. Connect the supplied RF lead from the socket labelled on the rear ofthe TV to the socket labelled IN* on your VCR.

3. Connect an RF lead from the socket labelled OUT* on your VCR to thesocket labelled ANALOGUE on the rear of the TV.

4. Connect the supplied scart lead from the socket labelled i3/r3 on therear of the TV to the audio/video sockets labelled TV* on your VCR.

5. Insert a pre-recorded tape into the VCR and press the ‘PLAY’ button.This enables the TV to locate and store the video channel during the‘Automatically tuning the TV’ procedure.

Connecting an aerial only

1. Connect your aerial lead to the socket labelled DIGITAL on the rear ofthe TV.

2. Connect the supplied RF lead from the sockets labelled andANALOGUE on the rear of the TV.

1. When you switch on the TV for the first time, the Sony logo is displayedon the TV screen, followed by the ‘Picture Rotation’ prompt. Sometimesthe Earth’s natural magnetism can cause the screen to look slanted.

a) If no correction is required, press B to select ‘Not Necessary’.

b) If some correction is required, press OK to select ‘Adjust now’.Press V or v to correct the slant. Press OK to confirm.

2. The ‘Autotune’ prompt appears on the TV screen. Press OK to select‘Yes’.

3. The ‘Region Set-up’ menu appears on the TV screen. Press V or v tohighlight your chosen region. Press OK to confirm.

The digital autotune display appears on screen and the TV starts tosearch for all the available digital channels. This may take some time,please be patient and do not press any buttons on the TV or remotecontrol.

If no digital or analogue channels are found, a message appears askingto confirm that the aerial is connected correctly. Check all the aerialconnections and press OK to start the automatic tuning process again.

When the digital autotune is complete, the analogue autotune starts tosearch for all the available analogue channels.

Once all available digital and analogue channels have been stored, theTV returns to normal operation, displaying the digital channel stored onchannel number 1. If no digital channels were found, the analoguechannel stored on channel number 1 is displayed.

The TV has now tunedin all the available channels

1. Press the DIGITAL/a button to switch between digital and analoguemode.

In digital mode, an information banner appears briefly on screen whenthe channel is changed.

In analogue mode, the channel number appears in green lettering whenthe channel is changed.

This TV has four picture mode settings, ‘Live’, ‘Personal’, ‘Movie’ and ‘Game’. ‘Live’,‘Movie’ and ‘Game’ are preset modes and only the ‘Contrast’ setting can beadjusted. ‘Personal’ mode however, also allows you to adjust the ‘Brightness’,‘Colour’ and ‘Sharpness’ settings.

This TV has four sound settings, ‘Personal’, ‘Dolby V*, ‘Dynamic**’ and ‘Natural**’

1. Press the MENU button on the remote control to display the TV menusystem on the TV screen.

2. Press the b button to enter the ‘Picture Adjustment’ menu.

3. The ‘Picture Mode’ option is highlighted. Press the b button.

4. Press the V or v button to highlight ‘Live’, ‘Personal’, ‘Movie’ or ‘Game’.Press the OK button to confirm.

5. a) If you have selected ‘Live’, ‘Movie’ or ‘Game’:Go to step 6.

b) If you have selected ‘Personal’:You can now adjust the ‘Brightness’, ‘Colour’ and ‘Sharpness’ settings.(Sharpness is not adjustable in digital mode).

Press the V or v button to highlight ‘Brightness’, ‘Colour’ or ‘Sharpness’.Press the b button. Press the B or b button to adjust the setting. Pressthe OK button to store.

6. Press the MENU button to exit the TV menu system and return to normalTV operation.

2. Press the v button to select the ‘Sound Adjustment’ menu.

3. Press the b button to enter the ‘Sound Adjustment’ menu.

4. The ‘Sound Effect’ option is highlighted. Press the b button.

5. Press the V or v button to highlight ‘Personal’, ‘Dolby V’, ‘Dynamic’ and‘Natural’ Press the OK button to confirm.

6. a) If you have selected ‘Dolby V’, ‘Natural’ or ‘Dynamic’:Go to step 7.

b) If you have selected ‘Personal’:You can now adjust the sound using the ‘Equaliser Adjustment’ option.

With the ‘Equaliser Adjustment’ option highlighted, press b to adjust.Press B or b to select the required frequency band. Press V or v to adjustthe frequency level. Press OK to confirm.

7. Press the MENU button to exit the TV menu system and return to normalTV operation.

Everyday useThis section explains the various functions and operations used during everydayviewing. Most operations can be done using the remote control.

1. Press the On/Off button (labelled !) on the front of the TV to switchon the TV.When the TV is in standby mode (the 1 indicator on the TV is lit red),press the TV I/1 button on the remote control to switch on the TV.

2. Press the PROG+/- buttons on the TV or press the PROG+/- orNumbered buttons on the remote control to select a TV channel.When selecting double digit numbers using the Numbered buttons, enterthe second digit within two seconds.

3. Press the 2 +/- buttons on the TV or on the remote control to adjust thevolume.

Additional operations

To Press

Turn off the TV temporarily (standby)...

TV I/1 on the remote control. When the TV is in standby mode the 1 indicator on the TV is lit red. Press again to return to normal TV operation.

Mute the sound... % button on the remote control. Press again to cancel.

Switch between analogue and digital mode...

DIGITAL/a button.If the TV is in digital mode an information banner appears briefly on screen when you change channels.If the TV is in analogue mode the channel number appears in green lettering when you change channels.

Change the Screen Mode... button. Refer to page 10.

Watch pictures from equipment connected to the TV’s front and rear sockets (video input mode)...

t button on the TV or t/ button on the remote control repeatedly until the picture appears. Refer to page 27.

z For example, if you wish to view pictures from a DVD player connected to the 2socket on the rear of the TV, press the t/ button repeatedly until the 2symbol appears on the TV screen together with the DVD picture.Please note, most equipment connected to the rear sockets, when activated, willsend a signal to the TV. The TV will automatically display the picture for you.

Screen ModeThe picture that the TV receives may be in one of several formats (e.g. conventional4:3 format, 16:9 widescreen format etc.). You can alter the TV screen modemanually to suit the broadcast you are watching*. (Alternatively, set the ‘AutoFormat’ menu option to ‘On’. The TV will automatically select the best mode to suitthe broadcast. Refer to page 22 for details.)

1. Press to display the ‘Screen Mode’ menu on the TV screen.

2. Press repeatedly (or use V or v) to select one of the following modes.

3. Press OK to confirm.

WideUse this mode for watching widescreen broadcasts (e.g. Digital / Satellite TV,DVD).

ZoomUse this mode for watching cinemascopic (letter box format) broadcasts (e.g.movies in letter box format). Due to the range of cinemascopic formats available,black areas may be visible on the TV screen. In ‘Zoom’ mode, parts of the topand bottom of the picture may be cut off. Press the V or v button to adjust theposition of the picture on the TV screen (e.g. to read subtitles).

14:9Use this mode for watching 14:9 broadcasts with the picture displayed in thecorrect proportions. As a result, black areas are visible on the TV screen. In‘14:9’ mode, parts of the top and bottom of the picture may be cut off. Press theV or v button to adjust the position of the picture on the TV screen (e.g. to readsubtitles).

4:3Use this mode for watching conventional 4:3 broadcasts (e.g. non widescreenTV) with the picture displayed in the correct proportions. As a result, black areasare visible on the TV screen.

Digital textSome broadcasters now provide a digital text service. Digital text services offer allthe familiar information that analogue (conventional) text services provide but withthe look and feel of a graphically rich website.

The appearance, content and navigation methods of all digital text services aredecided by the broadcaster. Most of the digital text services currently available usesimple navigation methods based on the following buttons:

Viewing digital textThere are two ways to view digital text, either while watching a digital channel or byaccessing a dedicated digital text channel.

a) Digital text from digital channels(depending on availability of service)

This form of digital text is accessed the same way as analogue text.

b) Digital text from a dedicated digital text channel(depending on availability of service)

Some broadcasters provide a separate channel for accessing their digital textservice.

Analogue textMost analogue TV channels broadcast a text service. The index page (usually page100) provides information on how to use the service. Please ensure that you arereceiving a good signal, or some text errors may occur.

FastextFastext allows you to access pages quickly and easily. When Fastext is available,four coloured items appear at the bottom of the text page. Press the correspondingColoured button on the remote control to access the page.

Page CatchingThis feature allows you to jump quickly from one page to another. When viewing apage that contains several page numbers (e.g. an index page), press OK. Press Vor v to highlight the required page number. Press OK to select. Your chosen pageappears on the TV screen.

The Channel Index menu The Channel Index menu provides a list of all the available digital channels, along

with information about the programmes currently being broadcast*. The currentchannel is previewed in the top right corner of the screen with it’s channel name andnumber displayed below it.

The Channel Index menu is only available in digital mode.

The Category pop-up listThe Category pop-up list allows you to display channels in the Channel Index menuby category.

The categories available include:

Favourite channelsThis feature allows you to create a list of your favourite channels. This list isdisplayed when the ‘Favourite’ category is selected in the Channel Index menu (seeabove).

To add a channel to the Favourite categoryWith the required channel highlighted in the Channel Index menu, press the BLUEbutton to add the channel to the Favourite list.

To remove a channel from the Favourite categoryAccess the Category pop-up list (see above). Use the V or v button to highlight the‘Favourite’ category. Press the OK button to display the ‘Favourite’ category. Usethe V or v button to highlight the channel you wish to remove from the Favourite list.Press the BLUE button to remove the channel.

WallpaperThis option allows you to customise the background pattern for all digital menus.

Parental ControlThis option allows you to set an age limit above which a PIN code is requiredbefore viewing is allowed.

PIN CodeThis option allows you to change your PIN code.

If you enter a wrong number, press the REDbutton to clear and start again. If you have forgotten your PIN code, please use9999. This Pin Code will always be accepted. Picture ModeThis option allows you to choose between four picture mode settings, ‘Live’,‘Personal’, ‘Movie’ and ‘Game’. ‘Live’, ‘Movie’ and ‘Game’ are preset modes andonly the ‘Contrast’ setting can be adjusted. ‘Personal’ mode however, alsoallows you to adjust the ‘Brightness’, ‘Colour’ and ‘Sharpness’ settings.

With the ‘Picture Mode’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press V or v toselect the required mode. Press the OK button to confirm.

Contrast, Brightness*, Colour*, Sharpness*, Hue**These options allow you to adjust the contrast, brightness, contrast, sharpnessand hue.

‘Brightness’, ‘Colour’ and ‘Sharpness’ can only be adjusted when the picture‘Mode’ is set to ‘Personal’. ‘Sharpness’ is not adjustable in digital mode. ‘Hue’ isonly available when viewing an NTSC colour signal, e.g. USA video tapes.

With the required option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press B or b to set thelevel. Press OK to confirm.

ResetThis option resets all picture settings to the factory preset levels.

With the ‘Reset’ option highlighted, press OK to restore default picture settings.

AI (Artificial Intelligence)This option monitors the picture and limits any sudden increases in brightnessand contrast.

With the ‘AI’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press V or v to select ‘On’ or‘Off’. Press OK to confirm.

Noise Reduction***Sometimes a weak signal can result in a ‘snowy’ picture (called Picture Noise).This option can help to reduce this effect.

With the ‘Noise Reduction’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press V or v toselect ‘High’, ‘Mid’, ‘Low’, ‘Auto’**** or ‘Off’. Press OK to confirm.

DRC-MF***** (Digital Reality Creation - Multi Function)This option allows you to enjoy higher quality pictures on your TV.

With the ‘DRC-MF’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press V or v to select‘Progres.’, ‘DRC1250’ or ‘DRC 100’. Press OK to confirm.

Colour ToneThis option allows you to alter the tint of the picture.

Sound Adjustment menuSound EffectThis option allows you to choose between four sound settings, ‘Personal’, ‘DolbyV*’, ‘Dynamic**’ and ‘Natural**’. ‘Dolby V’, ‘Dynamic’ and ‘Natural’ are preset andonly the ‘Balance’ setting can be adjusted. ‘Personal’ mode however, also allowsyou to adjust the ‘Equaliser Adjustment’ option.

With the ‘Sound Effect’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press V or v toselect ‘Personal’, ‘Dolby V’, ‘Dynamic’ or ‘Natural’. Press OK to confirm.

Equaliser Adjustment (Only available when ‘Sound Effect’ is set to ‘Personal’)This option allows you to customise the sound by adjusting five frequencybands.

With the ‘Equaliser Adjustment’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press B orb to select the required frequency band. Press V or v to adjust the frequencylevel. Press OK to confirm.

Virtual Effect (Only available when ‘Sound Effect’ is set to ‘Dolby V’)This option allows you to adjust the level of the surround sound effect whenlistening to a Dolby Surround Sound broadcast,

BalanceThis option allows you to set the balance of sound between the left and rightspeakers.

Auto Vol. ControlSometimes the broadcast volume level changes (e.g. adverts tend to be louderthan programmes). This option allows you to cancel out this effect, giving aconstant volume level.

With the ‘Auto Vol. Control’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press V or v toselect ‘Off’ or ‘On’. Press OK to confirm.

Dual SoundWhen receiving a bilingual broadcast, this option allows you to choosewhich language to listen to:

With the ‘Dual Sound’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press V or vto select ‘Stereo’ to listen to the sound in stereo, ‘A’ to listen to the firstlanguage or ‘B’ to listen to the second language. Press OK to confirm.

For example, to record from a camcorder to a video tape:Connect your camcorder to the 4 sockets (audio) and either the t4 or r4socket (video or S-Video) on the front of the TV. Connect a VCR to the i3/r3socket on the rear of the TV. Set the ‘AV3 Output’ option to ‘AV4’ (front sockets).Press ‘PLAY’ on the camcorder. The picture is sent through the i3/r3 socketto the VCR. Auto Tuning*All the available channels were tuned in when the TV was first installed. Thisoption allows you to repeat that process (e.g. to re-install the TV at an alternativelocation or to search for newly launched channels).

With the ‘Auto Tuning’ option highlighted, press b to select. The autotune promptappears on screen. Press OK to start the auto tuning process. When allavailable channels have been tuned the TV returns to normal operation.Programme Sorting*This option allows you to change the order in which the analogue channels arestored on the TV.

With the ‘Programme Sorting’ option highlighted, press b to display the‘Programme Sorting’ menu. Press V or v to highlight the channel you wish tomove to a new position, the press b to select. Press V or v to highlight the newposition, then press OK. The chosen channel has now moved to the newposition. Repeat to move other channels, if required.AV PresetThis option allows you to assign a name to any equipment connected to the TVsockets. Manual Programme Preset menu*

This menu allows you to tune in analogue channels, one by one.

Further Programme Preset menu*

This menu allows you to fine tune and set the volume level of an individual analoguechannel.

1. With the ‘Manual Programme Preset’ option highlighted, press b todisplay the ‘Manual Programme Preset’ menu.

2. Press V or v to select the channel number you wish to manually tune.Press b twice to select the ‘SYS’ column. Press V or v to select ‘AUS’ forTV broadcasts or ‘EXT’ for connected equipment. Press b to confirm andselect the ‘CH’ column.

3. Press V or v to select the required channel tuning (C for terrestrialchannels, S for cable channels or F for direct frequency input). Press bto confirm

4. You now need to tune the channel using one of the following methods:

a) If you do not know the channel number (frequency):Press v to select ‘SEARCH’. The TV automatically searches for thenext available TV broadcast channel or the VCR test signal. When achannel has been found, press OK to store or v to continuesearching.

b) If you know the channel number (frequency):Use the Numbered buttons to enter the channel number of thebroadcast you want or your VCR channel number. Press OK toconfirm.

c) For connected equipment (EXT):Press v to select ‘AV1’, ‘AV2’, ‘AV3’ or ‘AV4’, depending on whichsocket you have connected your equipment to. Press OK to confirm.

5. Press B or b to select the ‘LABEL’ column. This option allows you toassign a name of your choice (up to five letters or number). The name isdisplayed briefly on screen when the channel is selected.

Press V or v until the letter or number you require appears in the display(select ‘-’ for a blank space). Press b to confirm. Repeat this until thename is complete. Press OK to confirm.

6. Press B or b to highlight ‘Skip’. This option allows you to skip unusedanalogue channels when selecting channels with the PROG +/- buttons.(You can still select a skipped channel using the Numbered buttons onthe remote control.)

Press b the setting. Press V or v to select ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. Press OK toconfirm.

Remote control of other equipment The remote control supplied with your TV automatically operates the basic

functions of Sony DVD players and most Sony VCRs. The remote control can alsooperate DVD players and VCRs made by other manufacturers, provided that it isfirst programmed to match the particular brand of your VCR or DVD player**.

Programming the remote control

1. Find the three digit code for your brand from the list below.

2. If programming the remote control to operate a DVD player:Press the MODE button repeatedly until the green DVD light illuminates.

If programming the remote control to operate a VCR:Press the MODE button repeatedly until the green VCR light illuminates.

3. With the green light illuminated, press and hold down the YELLOWbutton for approximately six seconds, until the light starts to flash.

4. Use the Numbered buttons to enter the three digit code for your brand(refer to table, below). Once a correct code has been entered, the greenVCR, TV and DVD lights illuminate together momentarily.

5. Turn on your VCR or DVD player and check that the remote controloperates the basic functions (refer to ‘Controlling a DVD player’,‘Controlling a VCR’ on the next page for details). If not, repeat steps 2-4and enter the next three digit number for your brand.

6. Press the MODE button repeatedly until the green TV light illuminates.

Troubleshooting

Here are some simple solutions to problems which may affect the picture and sound.

Problem Cause Solution

No picture, no sound. • Power off.

• TV in standby.

• Aerial disconnected.

• Plug in the TV.

• If the 1 indicator is lit, press the TV I/1 button on the remote control.

• Press the ! button on the front of the TV.

• Check aerial connection.

Poor or no picture (screen is dark), good sound.

• Low picture settings. • Access the ‘Picture Adjustment’ menu and adjust the ‘Brightness’, ‘Colour’ and ‘Contrast’ settings. Refer to page 21.

No picture on any channel after digital tuning.

• No digital transmissions in your area.

• Weak signal.

• Unsuitable aerial.

• Tune in all available analogue channels. Refer to ‘Manual Programme Preset’ on page 25. Contact a local installer to find out when digital transmissions begin in your area.

• Ensure aerial/satellite dish is correctly aligned to transmitter.

• Ensure aerial is plugged directly into the TV (not through other equipment).

• Upgrade to a higher gain aerial.
