The Youth Sport Trust is an independent UK children’s charity dedicated to creating a brighter future for young people through the power of sport and physical activity. We want to ensure that every child — regardless of age, gender, background or ability — has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle and has access to high quality PE and school sport. We passionately believe this is crucial to tackling some of the biggest challenges facing today’s generation of children and young people.

NIFTY NETWORKING

SPREAD THE WORD

BE THE ‘CENTRE’ OF ATTENTION

RELEASE YOUR INNER ENTREPRENEUR

Use the power of social media to help your fundraising. Create an online giving page, not only does it save time collecting sponsorship in after the event, it is much easier to share with your family and friends via social media and email. Use your social media pages to track your training, update your progress, your achievements and your fundraising totals. Try and tie the money raised to how this will help the Youth Sport Trust. Don’t forget to tag @YouthSportTrust in your social media posts!

Create a Blog – this is a great way of keeping a track of your training progress and promoting any fundraising events. It demonstrates all the hard work you are putting in and will encourage people to donate.

If you are holding a fundraising event, you can set up a Facebook event page, this is a useful and free way to promote your event, communicate with your audience and track participants.

Ask if you can display a poster and collection tin at your social networks, for example, staff canteen, local pub, sports club, hobby group or local shop.

Don’t forget that what you are doing is amazing! Don’t feel shy in telling people about your challenge and asking for support.

Contact local press and radio to share your story, don’t forget to let people know how your fundraising will make a difference and how they can donate.

Ask local business for sponsorship, this could be for equipment, gym subscriptions or for raffle/auction prizes. Make sure you acknowledge any support on your blog and social media pages. Don’t forget to tag Youth Sport Trust in your social media posts.

Ask your workplace if they operate a matched giving scheme or if they will make a contribution towards your fundraising.

Contact shopping centres and supermarkets to ask if you can arrange a fundraising collection. Enlist the help of friends and family and take on a ‘Bag Pack’ in a supermarket. You can also combine your training and fundraising and run/cycle in a shopping centre while collecting. The more interesting you can make your collection, the more attention (and money!) you will get!

Raise funds by selling unwanted items or gifts on eBay or at a car boot sale. Ask work colleagues or friends to donate any of their unwanted items — instead of donating money — which you can then resell.

If you are creative you can try a bit of “upcycling” of old items and re-sell for a profit. Utilise any of your talents to raise funds. Are you... A keen gardener? A musician? An Artist? A foreign language speaker? Find a way to use your skills in return for a donation!

GET THE COMPETITIVE EDGE

Adding a bit of competition to the mix can be a great way of raising funds. Sweepstakes are an easy way of encouraging people to donate as they may win their money back! Just pick an event to base your sweepstake on, a few suggestions are The Grand National, The World Cup, FA Cup Draw and X Factor.

Black out cards/Tote Cards are ideal to use as an additional fundraiser at one of your events. People pay to “Pick a Team” or “Name a Teddy” on a pre-printed card. The winning Team/Name is sealed on the rear of the card and revealed once all of the squares have been picked. You can offer a cash prize from the takings or a donated prize such as a hamper or teddy.

Organising a Pub Quiz or even a series is a fun social event that can generate additional funding, especially when combined with a raffle. Ask your local pub to support you.

Run a “guess the finishing time” competition. When your friends/family donate over a nominated amount (say £5) they can have a guess at your finishing time and the person nearest your actual race finish time wins a prize!

Page 8: #TribeYST - Youth Sport Trust · Harness global best practice to ensure youth sport in the UK is inclusive, ... ways to reach your target. Fundraising ideas Planning your activity

FUNDRAISING 101

Organising your own event may require some effort on your part, but the returns on your time investment make it well worth your while. Tips for organising your fundraising event:

Allow plenty of time to plan and promote your event for the best results. We are talking months NOT weeks!

Set a budget

Increase fundraising by holding a raffle or auction at the event

Ask for sponsorship/discount for as many of the costs as possible e.g. venue, food and drink etc.

Most supermarkets will offer a “buy-back” of any unopened alcohol if you run your own bar

Create a Facebook Event Page to publicise your event and share with all your friends

YST can provide a poster template for you to print and place in local shops etc.

Keep it Safe and Legal, see our handy tips on page 10

Girls Active CampThe Girls Active Camp trained a network of girls – Girls Leadership and Marketing Squad (GLAMS) — to act as role models in their schools and communities. GLAMS are supported to use leadership, mentoring and peer marketing to empower girls to influence PE, sport and physical activity in their own and other schools, increase their own participation, develop as mentors and role models and ‘sell’ PE, sport and physical activity to other girls. After attending camp:

“It’s saying girls can be as good as everyone else. We can be just as good as the boys.”

GLAM, Girls Active

“I’ve became much more confident. I’ve got anxiety and when I was in Year 9, I wouldn’t get up and speak. I’ve now done a whole assembly in front of year each group and I would have never done that before.”

GLAM, Girls Active

“I could see it’s made a difference in some of my friends. They have quite a low self-esteem and they’ve done it and then felt better about their body and stuff. They feel better getting changed in front of people in PE and doing activities like long jump or something in PE they find that easier after this Girls Active has started.”

Girls Active transformed Gracie’s lifeGracie Rowe (14) from Hoddesdon won the Girls Active Award for Wellness Transformation after making a huge transformation in her life and learning to love physical activity through the Girls Active programme.

She said: “Just the very thought of sport used to make me feel bored and uncomfortable and I didn’t want to take part in anything in year 7. All my friends hated PE just as much as I did. Now I’m involved with Girls Active, it makes me feel good mentally and physically and I am way more confident and happy.

It led to me working with the other GLAMS (Girls Leadership and Marketing Squad) in my school to set up and join a 5-a-side football club for girls only and it is now my favourite sport. Getting involved has helped me to actively participate in PE and attend other sports clubs like tennis and rounders.

I feel empowered now to influence other girls who were like me by showing them that there is no limit to what you can do. It doesn’t matter on your size, age or ability level. Start with what you are comfortable with and push those boundaries.”

What we’re doing CASE STUDY

Play Unified has helped break down the barriers of isolation for my brother WillTeenager Jemima Browning’s younger brother has Down’s syndrome. She worked alongside her headteacher with support from the Youth Sport Trust to develop Play Unified at their school – Tadcaster Grammar School.

Jemima said:

“Will attended a mainstream primary school, which was great for his self-esteem, friendships and social skills. Because he had known all his friends since nursery, he was a person first: a person who just happened to have Down’s syndrome. However, as he got older, the gap between Will and his peers has grown. The differences between him and his friends have become more apparent and opportunities for Will to take part in sport have declined. He began to feel different and isolated and was starting to feel that he couldn’t do it.

“I heard about Play Unified through social media and since getting involved have set up a Play Unified project in my school.

“Play Unified is inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to understanding, acceptance and friendship — a principle that we have seen come to life as Tadcaster Grammar School through our involvement in the initiative.

“People now accept Will more and allow him to join in. He jokes with his friends and I truly believe they do not regard him as a ‘disabled person’, they see him as Will. Play Unified has helped break down the barriers of isolation Will had previously experienced, and provides an inclusive opportunity to take part, something that has not always been the case for him.”

Play UnifiedPlay Unified is a Special Olympics international youth led advocacy campaign to help end intolerance towards young people with intellectual disabilities, through supporting unified activities on and off the field of play.

As part of the programme delivered by YST, 544 Young Ambassadors were trained, 54% of whom had an intellectual disability.

92% of Young Ambassadors said Play Unified had helped them learn new skills such as teamwork communication and empathy towards others.

“I think before we went to Play Unified it was quite obvious if you could see somebody with a physical disability… after coming back from Play Unified, I think it opened up our eyes to mental disability and how people do stuff… how they feel about sport, it makes them feel like bad or good in a way.”

Students from Highfields School, Derbyshire

“We are immensely proud of the progress our pupils have made and the way in which they have embraced the values of Play Unified.

It’s been wonderful to see the way in which our Young Ambassadors have grown in confidence, taking responsibility for planning and seeing projects through to completion with a real ‘can do’ attitude.”

YOUTH SPORT TRUST — FUNDRAISING PACK 2018

KEEPING IT SAFE AND LEGAL

YOUTH SPORT TRUST — FUNDRAISING PACK 2018

No matter what type of event or activity you are fundraising for, it is essential that you ensure it is lawful and safe. We have listed a few things to be mindful of, to help you relax and enjoy the event.

COLLECTIONS

For public collections you will need to gain permission before you collect. For street collections you will need to apply for a permit from your local authority. For shops and pubs please seek permission from the manager. If you would like any collection tins/buckets please contact our fundraising team at [email protected]. The law requires that all collection materials are sealed and numbered, which we will also be able to provide you with.

RAFFLES AND PRIZE DRAWS

FOOD HYGIENE

There are strict legal regulations about the organisation of raffles, lotteries and prize draws. For more information on these regulations please go to www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk

If you are preparing food for fundraising purposes it is very important to take great care when handling food and work to basic rules for safe preparation, storage, display and cooking. Advice on providing food in a village hall or other community setting for volunteers and charity groups can be found at www.food.gov.uk

HEALTH AND SAFETY

A risk assessment will help to keep your event safe and enjoyable for everybody. We can provide a template risk assessment, please contact the fundraising team if you wish to receive one. For further information on how to keep your event safe please visit www.hse.gov.uk

GENERAL FUNDRAISING USE OF OUR LOGO

www.institute-of-fundraising.org.uk provides excellent guidance on general fundraising best practice.

You may use our logo to help promote your event; we ask you to adhere to brand guidelines to ensure correct and consistent use of the YST brand. To receive our logo and a copy of our brand guidelines please contact the fundraising team.

OUR SUPPORTERS’ EXPERIENCE

YOUTH SPORT TRUST — FUNDRAISING PACK 2018

MATTY’S TOP TIPS

1 Be organised, don’t be afraid to post and repost your page and email and text it out.

2 Do a few little events that play to your strengths ... music, sport, comedy. People will muck in and help (that’s what charity is all about).

3 Train!! Train hard and don’t think you can do this without getting the hours into your legs.

4 Have fun and it will be the most rewarding experience you have.

MATTY

I had run the marathon the year before for Mind and have done many fundraising events in the past, but running for the Youth Sport Trust was tons of fun. “I would 100% do it again! One of my best memories was the actual day itself — it was unbelievable. The support was great and even with an injury I was super happy with my time. One of my highlights was running along and catching a Haribo in my mouth thrown from the crowd to a massive cheer – and also being given a pink plastic guitar by a kid as my hair was down, towards the end of the marathon they played bohemian rhapsody right when the guitar bit comes in!

DANIELLE

The Youth Sport Trust were really supportive throughout our fundraising, coming up with fundraising ideas, sharing our fundraising events through social media, sending training tips and tops to wear on the day and they were there to cheer us on! I would definitely support the YST again.

GETTING SPONSORSHIP TO US COLLECTION TINS/BUCKETS

WAYS TO PAY

To help with our administration, it would be greatly appreciated if you could collect and return your sponsorship money to us within four weeks of the completion of the event.

1. Empty the tins/buckets, count the proceeds and make payment.

2. Post the empty tins/buckets back to Youth Sport Trust

ONLINE PAGES

uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving or www.everydayhero.com/uk Your donations will come directly to us, there is nothing further for you to do.

SPONSOR FORMS

Once your event is complete you can collect in any remaining sponsor money from your sponsor form. It is a good idea to tick off all the money that has been collected on your form. Please do ask your sponsors to complete the gift aid details if they are eligible, it can increase their donation by a whopping 25%.

If you are planning your own fundraiser, setting a fundraising target is a great way to motivate your supporters.

If you have committed to an event with a sponsorship target, it may feel daunting but with good planning and a bit of effort it is easily achievable. Do plan regular fundraising activities rather than leaving it all to the last minute. It is a good idea to mix in some simple easy fundraisers with one or two larger events. Contact the Fundraising team if you have any specific questions or need some support. It is what we are here for!

YOURTRAINING

16 | 17www.youthsporttrust.org | @youthsporttrust

If you are taking on a challenge event, you have an added commitment of training for the event as well as fundraising! However, there are lots of things you can do to make your experience a positive one rather than an all-out suffer-fest!

• Choose (and stick to) a plan suitable to your ability e.g. beginner, intermediate or advanced. You will find lots of resources on the website of your sporting body e.g British Cycling, British Triathlon to help you.

• Participate in regular training. Little and often is far better than a heavy session once a week (or fortnight!) This will help condition your body and the chance of injury will be less.

• Join a group to help motivation! This could be an official group like a local running club or just a group of friends. The important thing is to make a commitment to exercise.

• Log your miles and keep a training diary, the improvements you will notice will give you the enthusiasm to keep to your plan. You can do this manually or there are many internet-based sites that help track your progress e.g. Strava/Map My Run.

• Google is your friend! From finding suggested training plans to local clubs, you can find many helpful resources to assist your training activities.

• Utilise any group fundraising pages and resources provided by #TEAMYST to ask questions and help with training and fundraising progress.

• Contact the Fundraising team if you have any specific questions or need some support. It is what we are here for!
