Professor Wally Pasika, ofLaurentian University, helped by adonation from Inco, began researchfive years ago into making polymersthat contain sulphur dioxide in someform or another.

If his work proves successful,polymeric substances such aspolystyrene, (from which styrofoamcups and insulating sheets for housesare made), polyethylene, (from whichplastic food savers are made) and thepolyesters of the textile industry willbe made with SO2 and contain muchless petroleum based chemicals.

Dave Huggins, manager of processtechnology, presented ProfessorPasika with a second donation of$25,000 on behalf of Inco MetalsCompany so that the research maycontinue.

The Ontario division of Inco MetalsCompany was awarded a plaque inrecognition of the Company'ssponsorship of "Science ScreenReports".

You may have already seen onSudbury TV a little green electric car,ocean divers, a solar house, awindmill, carvings by Inco pensionerCharles Paxy, and possibly even theColumbia space shuttle.

They are all part of this year'sOntario division communications

program which takes a look at thefuture uses of nickel and copper.

These metals, mined, milled,smelted and refined by Incoemployees in the Sudbury basin,depict some of the technology, nowand in the future that will play animportant role in our lives - from

helping us be less dependent onconventional fossil fuels - toreaching below and above thesurface of the earth.

accompanying the programs proudlyrecognizes the efforts andachievements of the people at Inco.

Film production for television isalways interesting and this year'sseries was no different.

The electric car, for instance, is aprototype vehicle borrowed for thefilming. The opening scene shows thelittle green vehicle on Toronto's busyGardner Expressway. The idea, ofcourse, is to show audiences that thesolution to expensive gasolinepowered transportation, especially inbusy centres like Toronto, might bethe electric car. The technologyrequired to make the electric vehicleefficient depends in part on therechargeable nickelcontaining powersources, and copper to help make itan efficient reality.

The script called for the electriccar to appear on an emptyexpressway . . . which, if you've everdriven in Toronto, you'll know is anear impossibility.

The solution?Through the assistance of the

Toronto Film Board, traffic wasstopped for a few minutes while theelectric car appeared and the filmcameras rolled.

The diver welding underwateractually was an underwaterconstruction student . . . the weldingis part of his school program and wasfilmed in the practice tank of theschool which is in an old freighter.

From all the comments, theresponse to this year's programsindicate that Inco employees, theirfamilies and Sudburians, from schoolchildren to senior citizens, are sayingthat they find the presentations ontelevision, radio and in newspapersinformative and interesting. 'Theymake me feel proud to be a part ofthe company and the city when welearn about the benefits of the metalswe produce for the world," is acomment often received.

Hardrock Miners'certificates

awarded

Sixty-one hard rock miners fromthroughout the province, 24 of themfrom Inco Metals Company, wereawarded the first underground hardrock miners' certificates ofqualification in September. Theyreceived certificates for theirsuccessful completion of the newmodular training program. Theceremony held in Sudbury wasdeclared a historic occasion forOntario as it marked the officialrecognition of mining as a profession.

The new system of training andsubsequent recognition of skills ofthose completing it, came as a resultof six years of work by the MiningTripartite Committee on Training inthe Mining Industry and its technicalsub-committee. Chaired by Mr. J.A.Crouch of the Ministry of Collegesand Universities, the committee iscomposed of six representatives fromthe combined United Steelworkers ofAmerica and the Mine, Mill andSmelter Workers' Unions, six fromthe Ontario Mining Association andthree from the Ontario government.Milt Jowsey, assistant vice-presidentof mining and milling, has been amember of the Tripartite Committeesince 1977. Bob Moss, a functionaltraining coordinator in training anddevelopment, sat on the technicalsub-committee. Initially Local 6500was represented on both theTripartite and technical sub-committees by Tom Burrows. He waseventually replaced by Dick Kerr onthe Tripartite Committee and VicBaumruk on the technical committee.

The sub-committee was formed inApril, 1976, to develop a set ofmodules covering basic mining skillsapplicable across Ontario.

The Tripartite Committee providedterms of reference and defined themodular profile or outline, used formining.

These profiles are not trainingprograms in themselves but only a

means of organizing training byidentifying the various skills requiredto do a job. Each job was brokendown into its major skills or elementswhich were then arranged to producea module. These modules weredeveloped to provide the profile forthe Basic Underground Mining Skills.

To meet the requirements of thecertification program a miner mustfirst demonstrate his proficiency inseven common core skills named bythe committee. They include generalinspection, scaling, staging, drilling,rock bolting, blasting and mucking.The committee also identified 36specialized skills that were put intoseven groups; production,development, haulage, specialtydrilling, shaft services, constructionservices and general services. Aminer, on completion of the corecourses and eight specialties from atleast five of the groups and onespecialty from the production anddevelopment groups, will be entitledto an "Underground Hard RockMiners' " certificate.

"The committee developed aprogram of the minimum skills that anew miner must have to work

underground," explains Mr. Jowsey."They felt quite strongly that toproduce a creditable, high qualityprogram, skills would have to actuallybe proved by demonstration. This ofcourse would automatically preclude'grandfathering'. The TripartiteCommittee respects the desire of theindividual employee to attain hiscareer aspirations commensuratewith the companies' productionrequirements."

The responsibility of training newminers in common core and specialtyskill levels lies with each particularmining company and its instructors.The Ministry of Colleges andUniversities has publishedperformance demonstrationguidelines for use by instructors toassess the progress andachievements of the individual beingtrained. The program will bemonitored by both the Ministry ofColleges and Universities and theMinistry of Labour.

to carry with him. Along with theprestige of certification comes theknowledge that job mobility will besubstantially increased so that agraduate can take advantage of job

opportunities in mining wherever theymay be. The company also benefitsby having a safer, more efficientworkplace because of the proven skilllevels of each certified miner.

Energy lossestracked downand arrested

The investigations are continuing atall plants and mines in the Ontariodivision. The detectives at eachlocation are in eager pursuit ofculprits known as energy losses.

At Frood-Stobie mill, detectives arefinalizing an investigation with smileson their faces - the culprits havebeen identified and are under arrest.

It's all part of Inco Metals' EnergyManagement Program (established in1975) in which employees at allcompany locations are looking closelyat their own area of production toidentify major areas of energyconsumption, to isolate areas withlarge potential losses and determinewhat action be taken to improve

energy efficiency.And that's just what they've done

at Frood-Stobie mill. After months ofinvestigating and testing, millpersonnel have come up withrevisions to the heating andventilating system in the mill complexthat have resulted in an improvementin air quality and an annual decrease

In the past, fresh air fans andheaters in the mill's east walldirected the air flow across thevarious floors of the building. A row offans in the centre aisle of theflotation floor were used to boost airover the remaining flotation rows tothe roof ventilators.

Results from a mill heating systemsurvey indicated that the roofventilators were one of the culprits.Process heat was lost through theroof ventilators in a high bay area;there was no means of pressurizingthe building to prevent air infiltrationwhen the roof ventilators were in use;the starting of more direct-firedheaters to improve the comfort levelonly increased the chimney effectwhich caused an influx of cold airthrough all direct-fired heaters thatwere not operating.

The revised heating and ventilatingsystem provided significantimprovements by pressurizing the millby closing off the roof ventilators andclosing doors over unused direct-firedheaters. The roof ventilators wereclosed to eliminate the chimneyeffect within the mill building andcreate a slight positive pressure onthe top and ground floors. Thispositive pressure was well within themaximum efficiency of direct-firedunits, The unused sample conveyorgallery was sealed off to prevent ashort circuit of ventilating air from themill to number nine shaft hoistwell.

To further increase the chimneyeffect created by the number nineshaft hoistwell, the summerventilating fan in the lower roof was

of natural gas consumption byapproximately 25 per cent, or savingsof some $110,000.

"We're making use of heat that wewould normally lose," explainedMaurice Taylor, utilities supervisor atthe Frood-Stobie complex and amember of Inco Metals' InternalEnergy Management Committee. "Inthe past, we exhausted air throughroof ventilators, now we exhaust air

on the lower levels through the doors,windows and wall openings. We'vebasically reversed the ventilationpattern."

The original heating and ventilatingsystem was based on drawing infresh air through wall fans in thesummer and through the wall heatersin the winter. This air is directed tothe working levels and exhaustedthrough large roof ventilators.

tagged to run all year round. As well,a 50 square foot opening wasconstructed at the hoistwell roof lineto reduce the differential pressure(the difference between inside andoutside pressure) across the exteriorwalls.

Direct-fired units in the millbuildings were provided with guillotinegates with limit switches connectedto the combustion unit. The limit

switch prevents the unit from runningwhen the gate is closed. The gateprevents the exhausting of warm airwhen the units are shut down.

With a pressurized mill building andthe elimination of the roof exhausts,the waste heat from the processequipment is now part of the heatingsystem for the mill complex.

Existing direct-fired units are used,along with fresh air fans which arecontrolled by the outsidetemperature, to achieve the building'srequired air volume of 150,000 cubicfeet per minute.

The flow of heated air from the millthrough the galleries to number nineshaft lower roof, permitted theshutting down of several direct-firedheaters in the conveyor galleries andanother direct-fired heater in thetransfer house. The mill now has apositive pressure on the ground floorproviding a slight outflow of air at alldoors and wall openings. The direct-fired heaters at the doors nowoperate only when the truck doorsare opened.

The previous wide variation intemperature (up to 20 degreesFahrenheit) that occurred at differentlevels in the mill building has nowbeen reduced to approximately fivedegrees Fahrenheit. There is now animproved comfort level in all areas ofthe mill complex.

Testing of air distribution indicatedthat there were approximately nne airchanges per hour with no obviousstagnant areas. Carbon monoxidelevels within the mill ranged fromzero to three parts per million whichwere well below the 35 parts permillion guideline established by theOntario government.

Based on the results of this projectto date, and the current cost ofnatural gas, it is expected that therevised system will represent asavings of some $110,000 annually.

'We haven't had to purchasemuch equipment for this project,"said Ralph Shore, superintendent of

Frood-Stobie mill. "We've been ableto use most of the availableequipment in the mill complex. We'vespent some $5,000 for fans andrelated modifications."

"The concept is finalized," hecontinued. "There's no doubt theconcept works, it just needs somerefining."

In the foreseeable future, it is

expected that the concept ofpressurizing a building will beexpanded to include other areaswithin the Ontario division.

The summer months may be a timeof sweetness and sunshine for mostpeople. But for Walter Hughes, aplant protection officer at Creightonmine, it is more often a time ofdedicated work and diplomacy withbears. Walter is an apiarist, orbeekeeper.

The son of an Irish beekeeper,Walter grew up with fresh honey inthe pantry but it wasn't until the early

1970's that he decided to tend hivesof his own.

His first hives, or colonies, eachcontaining between 60 - 80000bees, were kept on the old Gagnonfarm across from the golf course inLively. Later, thinking he would get abetter honey return, he moved themto the golf course on the PenageRoad. Says Walter, 'The return wasgood until the bears came along

and destroyed some of the hives. Thecost of replacing them was toomuch" He decided to quit.

Moving what was left of the bear-ravaged hives was a job in itself,"says Walter. A friend, and Walter cladonly in work clothes and a bee veil,attempted to load the remaining hivesand their angry occupants onto apick-up truck. During the process,Walter's veil became snagged on atree limb, leaving his neck easilyaccessible to the thousands of beesclinging to his shirt. Withouthesitation they marched inside theshirt, not ending their journey untilthey had reached his ankles insidehis rubber boots.

'Well" says Walter, 'you can onlytake so much. I said to my friend,I've got to strip' and Iran down the

golf course tearing off my clothes. Bythe time I got to about the secondtee, I was standing there in just myshorts. My clothes were scatteredfrom the hives right down to the littlelake. I knew I couldn't stay there so Iwent back and slowly retrievedeverything in the order it came off,shook the bees out and put it backon. I took between 200 and 300stings that time.''

Without his hives however, Waltersoon became bored. And once againhe sent away for starter bees, againto be kept on the Gagnon farm. Asbefore, the bear population didn'tseem to wander into the area and fora while Walter was able to tend hisbees in peace.

Three years ago, the coloniesmade their final move, this time tojust inside the Inco gates of thetailings line, on the Creighton Road.By this summer they had grown to 1 1hives, producing nearly 1,200 poundsof honey.

The peace for Walter and his beesdidn't last long. It was inevitable thathis secret couldn't be kept. Onceagain this summer the sweet smell ofhoney lured the bears to the hivesand the number was reduced from 11to eight.

With the cold weather approaching,pollen and nectar have diminishedand the bees are preparing their

hives for winter, But with thebeekeeper removing most of thehoney (the bee's winter store of food),it becomes necessary to supplementthe bees with a sugar and watersyrup to see them through the winterahead.

"About the end of September I puttwo, eight pound cans of syrup intothe hive, every second day. Each canlasts about a day. They'll take about10 cans of it. After that they're ontheir own until March when I'll givethem another one to see themthrough until spring."

To protect the hives from theelements, Walter wraps each hive incardboard, tar paper and insulationabout mid-October. The beesare capable of regulating the insidetemperature of the hive, maintaininga constant temperature of about 90degrees Fahrenheit in the centrewhere the queen bee and her broodcluster are placed for safety. Nature,says Walter, has developed bees sothat they can raise or lower the hivetemperature at will, regardless of theoutside temperature. The protection

added by the beekeeper simplymakes their job easier.

One drawback to keeping bees isthe occasional sting, but saysWalter, it's something "you must putup with." Learning how to deal withstings is a must.

"If you get a sting, don't pull outthe stinger in a squeezing action withyour fingers. Each stinger has avenom sac on the upper end whichthrough a nervous reaction pulsatesvenom into the body. If you squeezethis sac, trying to remove the stinger,you are actually forcing the venominto your system. Instead, takesomething flat, your thumb, andscrape' the stinger out."

There are many reasons why beessting. It's not always a case of self-defense. Bees have a definite dislikefor cologne, deodorant soap, animalfibre and dark clothing, bad or 'beery'breath and foot odor. "In addition,"says Walter, "when a beekeeper isremoving their honey, they considerhim no more of a friend than thehoney.loving bear seeking to satisfyhis sweet tooth."

'S-t-r-e-t-c-h, take a deep breath,tighten those stomach muscles andhold. That's a familiar call thesedays n the auditorium at the IncoClub on Frood Road. The auditoriumis being used temporarily as agymnasium for members of theY.M.C.A.

The Y has been using the gymsince mid-September. At that time,Inco confirmed that arrangementshad been made on a temporary basisfor the Y to use the Inco Clubauditorium due to a fire in August that

damaged the 'i's gym, pool area,ladies and boys' locker facilities aswell as the ladies' exercise room.

"We are pleased to assist the Y nthis manner to help overcome themany problems the Y and itsmembers have experienced as aresult of the fire," said Wint Newman,president of the Ontario division.

Mr. Newman added that the Y isaware that the use of the mainauditorium at the lnco Club is on atemporary basis because theRegional Municipality of Sudbury is

currently assessing potential use ofthe Club facility. Inco announced lastyear that it would donate the buildingand property to the Region when itrelocated offices from the FroodRoad building to the Scotia Tower.

"We were in urgent need of aphysical education facility," explainedKerry Pinkerton, executive director ofthe Y.M.C.A. Some of our memberssuggested that we approach Inco tosee if the auditorium at the Inco Clubwas available."

The auditorium accommodates a

variety of Y activities includinggymnastics, judo, karate, physicalfitness classes, adult educationcourses such as dancercise plusboys' and girls' sports classes.

The auditorium is open to Ymembers from Monday to Friday,9:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Saturday,9:00 am. - 4:30 p.m. An instructor isavailable during those hours.

OF SUDBURYFew undertakings have captured

the interest and support of the public,politicians and private enterprise ashas Sudbury's land reclamationproject. Acres of once barren,denuded landscape have, through aunique, locally developed process,been changed into green belts ofgrass and trees. The beauty of thisprogram lies not only in thevegetation it is re-establishing in theregion but also in the various benefitsassociated with it that go ripplingthrough the community.

Acting on a study by LaurentianUniversity and the Science Council ofCanada that determined that landreclamation could be done on a largescale in Sudbury, regionalgovernment set into motion thegreening of Sudbury project in 1978.A method of liming, fertilizing andseeding soil in rocky areas pioneeredby Professor Keith Winterhalder ofLaurentian University was adopted asthe means of reclaiming land.

Mike Hickmott, coordinator of theland reclamation project, says thatthe most visible areas, particularly onthe approach ways to the city, weredesignated as the first targets for

revegetation. Since work began foursummers ago, land along Highway 17East and West, Highway 144,Highway 69, Martindale Road, ParisStreet and Notre Dame has beenreclaimed. It is on these arteries thatmotorists driving through Sudbury willget their first impressions of theplace, he adds.

The reclamation process beginswith maps being drawn of the targetarea. Tests are performed on the soilto determine nutrient content andacidity. Once the ph level of eachplace is found, crushed agriculturallimestone is applied to neutralize thesoil. According to Mike, about fivetons of lime are used on each acre ofland, something in the order of 2,000tons every year.

The lime is allowed to sit for atleast a month before fertilizer isspread. Almost immediately after thefertilizer is applied, grass seed isplanted. Mike notes that landreclamation people haveexperimented with native grass seedas well as commercial varieties. "Wefound that commercial varieties havedone just as well as native seed," hecomments. "They have survived quite

nicely. It works out much better forus cost-wise."

Students hired for the summer domost of the reclamation work. Anaverage of 200 students a year areemployed by the greening project.The nature of the local terrain rulesout the use of machinery in liming,fertilizing and seeding. It all must bedone manually.

The final step in reclaiming an areaof land is planting trees. "Trees donot survive in land which doesn'thave a grass cover," Mike stipulates.Once grasses have establishedthemselves after a year or two, treesare planted. Some 3,000 trees, suchas red, white and jack pine, poplarand mountain ash, have been plantedby land reclamation workers eachspring and autumn.

So far the results of landreclamation have been nothing shortof dramatic. About 3,100 acres ofstark, uninviting rocky soil has beentransformed into an eye appealingcover of green grass and trees.People, particularly those who haveseen land before reclamation tookplace, are amazed by the change'We're physically changing the

negative attitude (about Sudbury) thatpeople feel on the outside," statesMike. The land reclamation programhas attracted the interest of peopleacross Canada and the United Stateswho are considering similar projectsfor their own communities.

Mike estimates that there is atleast another five to ten years morereclamation work to be done. Theprogram has enjoyed the support ofall three levels of government andprivate industry, something he saysmust continue if land reclamation is

to carry on with its successes. Sincethe inception of the program, Incohas contributed financial support forthe purchase of materials annually tothe project. This year for example,part of the company's contributionhas been 17,000 woven, poly-propylene bags for the application oflime as well as limestone and someseed. A pair of Inco employees, TomPeters, agriculturist, and Jim Savage,grounds supervisor, sit on theVegetation Enhancement TechnicalAdvisory Committee, a group of

individuals that addresses itself to thetechnical aspects of the program.

Proponents of land reclamationhave little to fear in a time ofeconomic restraint because theprogram sits high on the priority listof local government. Not only is it amajor employer of students eachsummer but it also produces highlyvisible, very desirable changes to theregion's landscape. These changes, itis evident, will go a long way tosoftening the harsh view sometimestaken of Sudbury by visitors.

ANOTHER FIRSTFOR DIVISIONAL SHOPS

Recently the tradesmen atdivisional shops distinguishedthemselves by making a huge mildsteel trunnion that now supports aroaster kiln at the Iron Ore RecoveryPlant. It marked the first time atrunnion had been manufactured byOntario division employees. Notcontent to rest on their laurels, theyare chasing another first, theconstruction of four rotate drivehousings for a top blown rotaryconverter (TBRC).

Rotate drive housings cover thegears that are responsible forspinning the huge TBRCs at theCopper Cliff nickel refinery. Originallycast in England, these housings werefound to be prone to warping. Thecast construction could not withstandthe heat of the molten metal beingprocessed in the TBRC.

With an eye to alleviating thisproblem, Inco engineers anddesigners came up with the idea thatnew rotate drive housings befabricated out of mild steel locally,rather than returning to the castconstruction. The housings werefabricated at the divisional shopsplate shop, and sent to the machineshop for machining.

The housings, notes Bruce Warren,machine shop coordinator, weremachined according to specificationsdrawn up by Inco designers. Wealso manufactured the guts that gointo them, like cover plates andshafts, he continues. Thesehousings had never been machinedhere before.

The novelty of the task called uponthe machinists to innovate. Itrequires a certain amount of ingenuityon the part of the tradesman to lookahead and foresee any problems,"remarks Bruce. Because of thedifferent size and shape of the rotatedrive housings, new jig fixtures had tobe made to hold them in place on thehuge horizontal boring mill.

Tim Morse, a first class machinist,was closely involved with themachining of the new housings on thehorizontal boring mill. He says that, inanticipation of the project, he andfellow tradesmen at divisional shopsgot together and planned andreplanned an appropriate procedure.Following the completion of onehousing they assessed theirprocedure and made it more efficientby deleting some steps and addingothers.

The machinists are now taking onthe remaining housings with a systemand a confidence born out ofexperience. Bruce anticipates thatthe project will be completed by theend of the year. This length of time isnecessary because the machinists'first responsibility is to prioritizemaintenance jobs. The rotate drivehousings assume a special' statusand are worked on only when thereare no emergency jobs waiting to becompleted on the horizontal boringmill.

According to Bruce, the divisionalshops machinists welcome thechallenge of a completely newproject that has never been donebefore and calls on the old creativejuices to flow. There is a lot ofinterest in tackling a job like that,'Bruce mentions, hinting thatmachinists are a breed apart from therest. Shop tradesmen always look atrepairing or machining, as somethingwe can do better than anyone else.There is no such word asimpossible."

Two years of collaborationinvolving Thompson, Manitoba andCopper Cliff computer servicespersonnel culminated in thesuccessful integration of theThompson computer services and theCopper Cliff computer services - thefirst of its kind in the lnco family - inthe spring of this year.

The decision to integrate the twocomputer services departments intoa single organization was agreedupon jointly in June, 1979 by thenpresident of the Manitoba divisionCharlie Hews and Ontario divisionpresident Winton Newman.

The single organization, located inCopper Cliff, handles the computerservices of what is called theCanadian Operating ServicesDivisions of Inco Metals Company.The organization was established toprovide optimum computer-basedservices to support management ofboth divisions from one centrallocation.

Economics was a key factor inhaving the two computer systemsintegrated. It was simply moreeconomical to use the services ofone large computer than the services

Canada. Paradyne Canada Limitedprovided Inco with communicationcontrollers known as PIX units linkingthe computer terminals in Thompsonto the main Amdahl computer inCopper Cliff.

Inco computer personnel, ratherthan telephone company personnel,assumed much of the responsibility ofconducting in-depth tests on the

communication lines and acquiringany additional equipment needed toachieve the transmission of data atmaximum speed.

Although unexpected problemsarose, they made the operation moreinteresting, Ray added. "We wereable to solve the problems mainlybecause of the well-organized, hard-working team of Thompson and

Copper Cliff computer personnel."Before the hookup could take

place, all Thompson's programs anddata were put on magnetic tapes,some 700 of them weighing a total of2,000 pounds, and sent by Incoaircraft to Copper Cliff where theywere loaded on to the main Amdahlcomputer.

A trial computer test wasconducted prior to the actualintegration. Thompson dataprocessed on a normal day wasduplicated on the Amdahl computer.The duplication was accurate. Thetrial test proved successful.

Procedural changes rather thanmajor program changes were madein the two computer systems. "Thedaily processing time of Thompson'smajor systems is now considerablyless," stated Stewart Tait,superintendent of computeroperations and technical services inthe Canadian operating divisions."The computerized systems can nowbe processed at a faster speed thanever before, over four millioninstructions per second, which makesthem more effective and efficient inmeeting the requirements ofmanagement in both divisions."

As a result of the integration, theneed for Thompson's leased maincomputer was eliminated. It wasdismantled and returned to IBM. Thecomputer services personnel inThompson continue to carry out theirsame day-to-day activities but nowutilize the computer 1,000 miles awayand are in much closer contact withtheir associates in Copper Cliff.

Perhaps the most important aspectof the entire operation, Stewart noted,was the fact that there was a minimaldisruption of service. "It wasn'tapparent to the users that thechangeover had occurred, it wentthat smoothly. And we wouldn't havesucceeded without the teamwork."

The integration has proved sosuccessful, Stewart added, that plansare in the making to study thefeasibility of sharing the computerinformation services on a morecorporate-wide basis.

Bob Reeves, superintendent of computer services in Thompson, witnessed the safe loading ofboxes containing tapes of programs and data from the Thompson computeron to the Inco aircraft.

If generosity can be measured byhow much one is willing to give up forthe sake of others, then GaetanMarquis, a foreman in the shearingdepartment at the Port Colbornenickel refinery, and his family must beconsidered very generous. They havewillingly given up some of the luxuriesthat we all take for granted, in orderto raise three adopted CanadianIndian sisters.

Gaetan, his wife Madone, and sonsMarc, 10 and Ryan, 6, tasked aboutthe possibility of adopted children forsome time. When the "boat people"crisis occurred, they thought that itwould be the perfect opportunity forthem.

They read about an organizationthat was formed in the NiagaraPeninsula to find homes for some ofthese orphaned children. Because ofthe many restrictive governmentpoUces and administrative problemsencountered by them, the Marquisgave up on this angle.

They then approached FamilyChildren Services, an Ontariogovernment agency that looks afterthe welfare of children. After muchinvestigation they were finallyapproved as prospective parents.

They went to Toronto where theylooked at many orphans' photos andcase histories. "We showed aninterest in about 20 of them and thenstarted to narrow down our search.

None of the Marquis are home for lunch during(he school week, The children all take turnshe/ping to pack the lunch boxes and with sevenof them to fl/I it becomes almost like aproduction line. It was Loris and Jul/es turn tohe/p their mother this time.

The three gir/s were well taken care of in theirfoster homes. New clothes and different haircuts made a big difference in their appearance.They are adjusting very well to (heir new life.

We fell in love with three littleCanadian Indian girls but found outthey had already been adopted,'stated Gaetan.

Although disappointed, the Marquisdidn't give up. They kept in closecontact with Family ChildrenServices. Their diligence paid offbecause during a visit to the F.C.S.office, Madone was told that thethree Indian girls were still in need ofa home.

The Marquis made arrangementsto fly out to Saskatchewan to meetthe girls and bring them to PortColborne. It wasn't long before theirfamily had three new members; tenyear old Lori, eight year old Julie andfive year old Natalie.

"The girls have adjusted to their

new life very quickly and I think it ismainly because their foster parentshad treated them well," said Gaetan.

Before we adopted them, Natalie,the youngest, was living in a fosterhome about 40 miles from her twosisters and didn't get the chance tosee them much. They are very happyto be reunited now. The boys haveaccepted their new sisters withoutquestion," Gaetan stated.

One does not have to be withGaetan and Madone very long torealize that they take theresponsibility of raising all theirchildren seriously. But it's difficult tosay who gains the most from thisrelationship - judging by the smileson everyone's faces it looks like theyare all winners.

Dr. Walter Curlook turned the switch in September thatofficially opened the new battery operation at theCopper Cliff nickel refinery. The battery powder plant houses amulti-stage process that will produce 2.5 million pounds of the"200" or battery powder series of nickel powder. suggestionA total of $38,195 was awarded to 206 suggestions in this month'ssuggestion plan. Due to the large volume of suggestions awarded thismonth, only those suggestions of $315 or more are listed below.

$5,680 Bill Glogger of Garson mine netted this month's top suggestion plan award for his idea topurchase an adapter kit which allowed surplus Joy motors to be installed on CIR slushers.Savings were made on parts and labour.

$3,300 At the iron Ore Recovery Plant, Richard Marieau and Jean Beaupariant shared $3,300 fortheir suggestion to purchase cover cloth for cottrell cabinets in shorter widths. The covercloth was easier and faster to install and resulted in less waste. In the shorter width, thecover cloth also eliminated fire hazards in the cottrell area.

$2,955 Maurice Picotte of McCreedy West mine noted that the piping used for sandfill line elbowjoints frequently wore out and changing the pipe took a long time. Maurice suggestedinstalling six inch heavy duty pipe which lasted longer than the previous pipe. The suggestionreduced the frequency of changing pipes and savings were realized on parts and labor.

$2,535 At Stoble mine, Doug Jeffrey noticed that number seven and eight electro-magneticcontactors on Goodman trolleys were not required during trolley operation. The elimination ofthe contactors reduced maintenance costs and savings were made in materials.

$2,015 Bob Sawyer of the copper refinery thought that precious metals in the lab effluent could beretrieved, so he suggested that the effluent be pumped to the first stage mix tank or leachsump pump to be processed again. The suggestion reduced precious metal losses.

$1,660 At the same location, frequent breakage of rack roller bearings on the Hyster truck (similar toa forklift truck) prompted Austin Burns to suggest installing a steel plate on the truck. Thesuggestion reduced downtime and costly repairs.

$1,370 Bill Giogger at Garson mine won a second suggestion plan award this month for his idea topurchase slusher rollers from an alternate supplier. Previously the rollers were discarded dueto breakage of the babbit and bushings. The new rollers have replaceable bushings and canbe re-used thereby extending the life of the rollers.

$1,215 At Levack mine, Walter Krauer was awarded an additional amount for his earlier suggestion(addi- to use air to clean out sandfill lines at pour points for stopes where there is more than onetional) pour point. The suggestion reduced the amount of sand spilled into the drifts there by

reducing cleanup time.

plan awards$915 Thomas Burke at Stobie mine found that sandfill casing pipe rings were difficult to remove

from the end of worn out collar pipes, so he designed a tool to correct the problem. The ideareduced the possibility of burns from falling slag while burning old collar pipes out. Savingswere made on materials and labor.

$765 The rubber inside sandfill casings frequently broke off and caused plugged lines, noted BrunoPharand of Coleman mine, so he suggested using regular heavy gauge pipe which was lessexpensive and reduced the frequency of plugged lines.

$645 George Taibot of the smelter came up with the idea to have tuyere pipe made in themachine shop rather than purchase it outside the company. It was cheaper to make it in theshop.

$645 At the divisional shops, Bob Canapini suggested a new design for transformer coils in thepermeability recorders. The new design withstood high temperatures and eliminated coilfatigue. Savings were made on materials.

$570 Guy Downey of Levack mine devised a new method of bonding track, using nine inch trackbonds. The suggestion created quick and easy inspection and reduced time for trackmaintenance.

$560 Gary Varga and John Seminchuk at Levack mine split $560 for their suggestion to revisethe loading pocket hoppers. This led to a reversal in the installation of a 15 and 60 inch pieceof Trellex billet (rubber wear plate) with the 60 inch located below the 15 inch one. The 15inch piece escaped wear thus saving half a billet per change for each hopper.

$495 At the copper refinery, Dominic Castanza noticed that the hookups on pouring ladles wereoften bent or filled with copper, so he suggested modification to the hookups. This eliminatedcopper splash from jamming the hookups, resulting in savings in manpower and ladle repair.

$405 Bill Perreault and Jack Arsenault at the copper refinery suggested to adapt a Wellmancrane ram hydraulic cylinder with a clevis at the end. The idea allowed for cylinder mobility,therefore eliminating the possiblity of the cylinder rod breaking. Maintenance costs anddowntime were reduced.

$325 Albert Kiussmann and Ron Tessier at Stobie mine shared $325 for their idea to design andmake a clevis clamp at the Inco shops for 3-boom jumbos. Savings were made on materials.

$325 At Little Stobie mine, Rene Leduc netted $325 for his suggestion to apply coats of liquidpolyurethane to the walls of the dry instead of retiling the walls. The plastic coating resistedsoap, hot water and chemicals and lasted a long time. Savings were made on materials.

$315 Ray Poulin and Norm Buchy at Garson mine split $315 for their suggesUon to build up wornout areas on slusher frames. The frames were originally discarded when they wore out.Slusher downtime was reduced. Savings were made on materials.

Jake's crew

Jake Clement's crew in the nickelreverb furnace department at thesmelter has set quite a safety record- they have gone one full yearwithout a report to first aid - noscrapes, no cuts, not even a need fora bandage.

"As far as I know, this kind ofrecord hasn't been achieved in thisdepartment for many years," Jakecommented.
