Assessment Approach:
Our objective for this assessment is to evaluate the key elements that define organizational capacity and sustainability. We will conduct a SWOT analysis that focuses on six pillars of organizational capacity and effectiveness: 1. Mission, Vision, and Strategy – Does the organization have a clear mission and are strategies in alignment with the mission? 2. Governance and Leadership – Does the organization have strong governance and foster leadership? 3. Resource Development – Is the organization financially sustainable? 4. Strategic Relationships – Does the organization have strong and positive relationships with external

stakeholders? 5. Internal Operations and Management – Does the organization have a strong and sound core infrastructure? 6. Program Deliver and Impact – Is the organization effective in the delivery of programs and services and is evaluation of impact integral to the organization? Our analysis will offer an objective assessment of each of these core areas, identifying strengths that help build on current success; weaknesses or challenges that are impeding progress and effective operations and governance; opportunities that help position the organization for greater impact; and environmental threats that may be beyond the control of the organization but present significant internal or external risks that must be monitored and managed. In addition to our review of key data and materials related to the Center, our assessment process is designed to engage staff, board members and other key stakeholders in important leadership conversations. Their unique perspectives will help inform our overall analysis. An added benefit of their participation is our client's opportunity to engage these key groups in a meaningful way, strengthening the shared ownership of the organization and its future among those with the ability to impact it most.

Assessment Approach:
Organizational capacity is an abstract term that describes a wide range of capabilities, knowledge and resources that nonprofits need in order to be effective. What makes an organization effective? In Grantmakers for Effective Organizations, the authors suggest it’s “an organization’s ability to fulfill its mission measurably through a blend of sound management, strong governance and a persistent rededication to assessing and achieving results.” Organizational capacity is multifaceted and continually evolving. The organizational capacity model has six components generally recognized as necessary for high performance and effective leadership: 1) mission, vision and strategy; 2) governance and leadership; 3) program delivery and impact; 4) strategic relationships; 5) resource development; and 6) internal operations and management. These interdependent components all contribute to the health and performance of a nonprofit organization. We use a proprietary online survey completed by the ED and Board Leader with a review of supplemental materials by a team of at least 2 consultants to offer a prioritized report of strategic objectives for the future.

75‐120 hours of consulting time over approximately 3‐4 months
What is the average cost of an Organizational Assessment?
$8,000‐$14,000
Assessment Approach:
My approach is to begin with an orientation session, providing some basic training for board and high level staff while learning about their hopes and expectations for the process. I like the comprehensiveness of the Marguerite Casey Foundation Organizational Capacity Assessment Tool and that it is available for nonprofit use at no cost. It requires commitment of key leaders to take the time to work through it. The Executive Director and Board President are asked to complete the survey and possibly one or two other key organizational leaders. This group makes up a small team to oversee the assessment process. I will conduct an extensive review of internal documents including communications and fundraising materials, program policies and guides, human resource policies, board documents, financial statements and workflow documents, program evaluations, major grants and grant reports, etc. I also like to conduct 10‐15 key interviews with funders, staff, donors, board members, volunteers, and others. I document all of my assumptions, questions, hunches and trends that are revealed from
Triangle Capacity‐Building Project

the document review and from the interviews. I usually do not conduct surveys because I do not find that they reveal enough additional information to warrant the time that goes into the instrument development and analysis of data unless there are key questions or groups that we need to access and survey is the best option. After data collection, I'll facilitate a series of meetings with the small group of leaders that completed the Organizational Capacity Assessment Tool to review their responses, discuss variances and highlight meaningful discoveries. Other board members or key leaders may be invited into these discussions where we also review findings from the document review and interviews. Finally I will write up a report with recommendations that I will review with the small team of leaders before we, together, take the report to the board for adoption of final recommendations.

I work with social justice organizations as frequently as possible and am also regularly engaged with other types of organizations. Co‐creating stronger, more vibrant organizations is my passion.

Do you facilitate Organizational Assessments?
I typically conduct these assessments as part of a larger project rather than on their own, though I am, certainly, open to exploring stand‐alone assessments.
On average, how much time is needed to complete an Organizational Assessment?
To a large extent, the time investment depends on the aim/scope of the assessment, size of the organization, and the relative availability of assessment sources/data. Time may range from 2 days to 20 days or more, with an average of 5‐15 days.
What is the average cost of an Organizational Assessment?
$5,000‐$15,000 average, with streamlining options.
Assessment Approach:
Key elements I lend to assessment processes include: right‐sizing the process to the organization and its goals; creatively using available information and time; ensuring that people feel heard and appreciated for their contributions; and facilitating processes that lead to deep learning and “a‐ha” moments. My approach includes: identifying a team of stakeholders (often staff, board, and clients/program participants) to guide the process; clarifying the aims of the assessment; inventorying on‐hand data (organizational/program evaluations, community assessments, client feedback, staff and board reflections/evaluations, strategic plans, financial and fundraising reporting, etc.); determining additional data needs; developing data collection plans and instruments; collecting data and/or training data collectors; facilitating or conducting data analysis and interpretation; and developing reporting, presentations, “community” forum plans, and other methods of sharing the learnings.
Capacity Building Services:
Key elements I lend to capacity‐building engagements include: tailoring capacity‐building to varied organizational and individual cultures and realities; using a variety of methods (e.g., training, technical assistance, coaching); connecting capacity‐building to “real” work so it is immediately value‐added and not just an add‐on “task;” and evaluating the results of capacity‐building in an ongoing way to continue to strengthen it.

Additional information:
I welcome exploratory conversations as organizations are considering how best to invest their precious time and other resources to be stronger and more sustainable in these important times of challenge and of great opportunity.

Assessment Approach:
My approach varies depending on the size, complexity & sophisticating of the organization. I strongly favor making the process simple and straightforward. Most organizations know most of their strengths and weaknesses. The assessment tool provides data to prioritize and take action. For small, grassroots organizations I use the Babcock Foundation's tool which focuses on 7 organizational capacities with a set of 5‐12 'yes/no' questions for each category. For larger, more complex organizations I use a tool developed by the Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership. I use these survey tools to highlight issues which I then explore with the board & senior staff in a retreat‐like setting. I then return to the senior leadership with my findings and recommendations.

Assessment Approach:
I generally read everything (Budget, Bylaws, Personnel Policy, Articles of Incorporation, Strategic Plan, Organizational Chart, Website, Brochures, Recent Funding Proposals, etc.) I generally interview the Board Chair, Treasurer, ED and key staff members. I often Survey Monkey Board and staff. I may meet with the board and/or staff. Then do a DRAFT Assessment, send it to the Board Chair and ED to vet and edit, then finalize it and submit it.
Capacity Building Services:
These services depend a great deal on the needs of any specific agency so it is difficult to state specific services. They may be staff centered, Board centered or both. They may also be more centered on coaching or tutoring. Or, in fact, all of the above.
Additional information:
In my experience every assessment is a bit different. I generally meet with key personnel and then submit an assessment plan, revise it working with the agency and proceed. I find this method generally keeps us all on the same page.
