TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
How Safe Is Ultrasound?
DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of ultrasounds during routine pregnancies? How many typically are performed, and are there any possible negative effects on the fetus? Are doctors today performing more ultrasounds (including 3-D ultrasounds) just because they can and because it’s exciting for the expectant parents, or is there a medical reason for performing these? My daughter-in-law is in her sixth month and has had two ultrasounds, plus a 3-D session. She is under the impression that she will have at least one more. To my knowledge, this is not a high-risk pregnancy (she’s 26 and everything is going fine). I’m just wondering if so many sessions are really needed and what is known about the effects on the fetus. -- G.M.
ANSWER: There is some controversy over whether an ultrasound poses risks to the developing fetus. The Food and Drug Administration has noted that there may be some heating of tissues and that any long-term risks are unknown. I did find studies showing that there is no long-term risk of leukemia, hearing loss or abnormal eye development. A 2013 guideline from multiple groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recommended a standard first-trimester ultrasound, and a standard second- or third-trimester ultrasound. Any other ultrasounds would be based on a clinician’s concern for a potential problem. The guideline specifically states: “Fetal ultrasound should be performed only when there is a valid medical reason, and the lowest possible ultrasonic exposure settings should be used to gain the necessary diagnostic information.” I don’t have enough information to know why your daughter-in-law has had more ultrasounds than is usually recommended for a normal pregnancy. Perhaps her obstetrician has a low-level concern she hasn’t shared with her, or your daughter-in-law with you. While not the case for her, I am concerned about the growing trend of so-called keepsake ultrasounds that are not performed for valid medical reasons, such as those done in shopping malls. These might not be administered with the same degree of expertise and safety as a medical ultrasound.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78 and have had urinary tract infections continually for the past eight or nine months. My urologist prescribed methenamine for six months, then a month of cephalexin, then back to the first prescription. Why is it so hard to get rid of UTIs? What would you recommend? - A.C.S.
ANSWER: Frequent urine infections are common. However, it is important to find out if this is the same infection that hasn’t ever gone away, or a series of new infections. An infection that doesn’t go away needs an evaluation for something abnormal in the urinary tract, such as a kidney stone. Your urologist is treating you with medication to prevent new infections. Methanamine is a urinary antiseptic, and cephalexin is a broad- spectrum antibiotic. You didn’t tell me if you are a man or a woman. Men with recurrent infections should be evaluated for prostate issues. Women with recurrent UTIs frequently are affected by atrophic vaginitis. There are many other causes. It’s worth discussing further with your urologist.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

A storyteller is someone who can bring your imagination to life with the tales that they tell. What’s more amazing is when the stories that are told are pieces of a life that spans 104 years. Frances Fonte was born Feb. 7, 1912 in Rochester, NY. She was the oldest of 5 boys and 2 girls. She grew up on Warehouse St. near Kodak. Fran went to No.17 school and attended Jefferson High School for two years before she had to drop out at age 15 to go to work. And then her stories start... “I worked at the Quality Heel Factory in Rochester. My cousin Ethel got me the job. I got paid good money because it was piece work. I gave some money to my grandma and I got to keep some on the side.” And then Fran laughs before continuing, “I liked to dance, and I was a flapper! Loved the Charleston. Once I went to a speakeasy and it got raided! More people drank during prohibition than before! My uncle ran a saloon where you could buy beer in a pail. There was a 5 cent pail and a 10 cent pail. I would bring a pail home to my dad.” Fran laughs again as she recalls the memory. She worked at the shoe factory for 30 years, but it closed because there wasn’t enough help during the war. Fran tells of a time when extended families lived together in neighborhoods. She lived through the Depression and tells a story of when she would organize her siblings into a “performing” act. Her brother would play the drums and her four year old sister Angie would dance at birthday parties for money. “I would tell her to do the ‘Russian’ dance ‘cause people would throw coins out for that. I was in charge of the bag that held the money.” In 1933 Fran married Vito “Vic” Fonte. The two eloped and were married by a justice of the peace in Bergen, NY. Two weeks later they got remarried in St. Lucy’s church. As she says that, Fran remembers another story. “I remember going to St. Lucy’s when I was young. One of my teachers was a nun who thought I should cut my very long hair. I let her talk me into it, but then I was afraid to go home! My uncle (a lawyer) was very upset about it. He tried to get the nun arrested, but the judge threw the case out because he said that was the style. What was my uncle
Frances Fonte
Celebrating a Storyteller
thinking?!?! That they’d really arrest a nun?!” And then there is more laughter. The couple had a daughter, Rita, in 1935. Vic was drafted in the Navy in 1944, thirteen months before the war ended. Sadly, Vic got pneumonia and died in Philadelphia. Fran got a telegram as they didn’t have a phone. She and Rita moved in with family. Fran never remarried. Today Fran is still close with her family. Her sister Angie (the youngest at 94 years old) and brother-in- law visit weekly and her daughter Rita visits a lot at Wedgewood Nursing Facility where she has lived for the past five years. If a life well lived is measured by the stories we tell, then Frances has had a wonderful life filled with wonderful family and friends, laughter, and tears, and joy. As she turned 104 this month we want to wish her a very happy birthday and thank her for all the joy he brings when she shares her stories!

(NewsUSA) - Tip #1 for Renting
* Look at the numbers. Renting might not be the best option. If you’re going to lose money each month, it might make more sense to sell, even if you won’t get your asking price. Consider all potential costs, including property taxes, income taxes on your tenants’ rent, maintenance, and the normal wear and tear your property will experience. Remember that you won’t be able to pocket all of the rent money; you will have to put a portion of it back into the property.
Landscaping (Family Features): Yard work can take over the weekends all year long. One of Landscape Management’s “10 Trends for 2010” is devoting more land to shrubs and perennials and less to grass. Not only does this add curb appeal and eco- friendliness, it cuts down on maintenance and the time required to keep the outdoor area well maintained. Talk to your local nursery or cooperative extension office to find plants that are well-suited to your area. The more adapted plants are to the local climate, the less you have to do for them and the less likely you are to need to replace those that don’t thrive. You can also look into xeriscaping - gardening techniques that reduce the need for supplemental watering - and into creating rain gardens to take advantage of those areas that receive too much water.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.
Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

I want to thank my
neighbor across the street
on Broxbourne Drive in
Fairport for helping to plow
my driveway after the
snowstorm on February 16
when he saw that my
snowplow was too small to
tackle the amount of snow
that had piled up on my

accept the money I offered
him for his troubles.
I want to thank the

during the coldsnow spell
we had that weekend. The
man not only filled my tires,
he didn’t charge me for it. I
was on my way out to Hilton
to see my girlfriend and I
made it with plenty of time
to enjoy together!
I wish to send a big shout
out THANK YOU to the

I will make this short

is that whomever owns our

That’s what happened

it was to me! You are an
angel! Thank you from the
house near the LeRoy
American Legion!
I’d like to thank all those
good citizens who helped
me round up my two
horses when they decided
to make their great winter
escape on Wednesday
morning 2/17/16. They
trotted down snow covered
roads, Jackson & South,
Holley. Cindi Davis saw me
trying to catch the rouge
ponies and gave me a ride
to keep up with the horses.
Once I caught the horses I
had to walk them home.
Cindi stayed behind me
with her car flashers on to
warn traffic. Two other
good citizens helped, John
Carp & a red SUV; I was
unable to get her name. A
big THANKS to all!!

HOW TO DONATE ITEM S INSTEAD OF CASH
Sell older items, then donate the proceeds. That tattered armchair or noisy w ashing machine may not be w orth much to a charity, but you might be able to sell such items by hosting a yard sale or posting them for sale in the new spaper or on an online c lassifieds board. Charities prefer higher quality items, but you might be able to sell older items to your neighbors w ho simply w ant great bargains. If you can sell such items, simply donate the proceeds to your favorite charity. This saves the charity from being saddled w ith w orn dow n items w hile also saving them the resources and efforts needed to refurbish and sell the items themselves.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 8, 1951, the Lonely Hearts Killers, Martha Beck and
Raymond Martinez Fernandez, are executed in the electric chair
in New York. The couple had schemed to seduce, rob and
murder women who placed personal ads in newspapers.
Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being
overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many
illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can
require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet.
The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical
Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they
reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving
around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find
that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing
weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people.
One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more
nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins
and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need
with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and
lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined
starchy foods can be the key.
Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be
packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for
water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be
harder to detect as you get older.
In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie
intake, seniors should continue to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate
exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight
maintenance. The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy.
While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and
stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training
and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with
age, and according to the Mayo Clinic if you avoid strength exercises you can
eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. Strength
training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures.
In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will begin to burn calories more
efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more productive.
Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their
doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid
as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including
vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the
vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in
vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions.
Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients.
The body’s nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those
uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with
their physicians.
Diet and exercise needs change as men and women age

Canine Health: Getting To the Heart of It (Family Features) According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 43 million dogs are estimated to be overweight or obese, and a primary risk of excess weight, in pets, is heart disease. And, just as humans often adopt a natural diet to help support cardiac health, feeding natural foods can also benefit their canine companions.
When it comes to canine heart health, there are two key things for pet parents to consider: feed a balanced diet that is rich in high- quality, natural foods and encourage regular exercise to help maintain lean body condition.

Grass-Free Landscaping a Viable Alternative
For those who are ready to say goodbye to grass, there are many alternatives.
Ground cover: Homeowners who still desire the look of green can choose among different types of ground cover that will quickly fill in the landscape. Clover, low-growing evergreen plants and ivy are some of the more popular ground cover alternatives.
Rocks: Decorative rocks intermingled with native plants can add dimension and color to the yard. Once rocks are placed, there is little upkeep except for pulling the errant weeds.
Mulch: A less expensive alternative to rocks is mulch. Mulch is available in different colors and types and can even be created by a homeowner by chipping trimmed branches from trees in the yard. It helps lock water into landscaping beds, decreasing the need for frequent watering.
Water features: Think about installing a pond in the yard that can be bordered with stones and mulch. This will take up a good amount of space and can create a natural habitat for wildlife and even some low-maintenance pond fish.
Concrete or patio stones: Although they’re not all-natural materials, patios can take up areas normally consumed by the lawn and create expansive outdoor entertaining areas. It will require an initial investment of the patio material, but once installed, patios don’t require significant maintenance. Homeowners can offset the concrete jungle feel by placing plenty of potted plants and container foliage around the perimeter.
Decking: Another alternative to concrete and stones is a wood or composite material deck. Again, this structure will increase outdoor living space and won’t require the level of routine maintenance needed to keep a lush lawn.

Getting Started: Making the Most of an Internship
Today’s college kids are well aware of the job market that awaits them upon graduation. With an economy still on the mend and unemployment rates still high, college students across the country know that their post-graduation dream job is no guarantee.
As daunting as entering the job market amidst the ongoing economic woes might seem, college students or even recent graduates can take steps to make themselves more attractive to prospective employers. Perhaps no such step has been more popular over the years than securing an internship. Internships are designed to give current students or recent graduates an entry into a field that int erests them, providing an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and pad their resumes in the meantime.
As valuable as a good internship can be, it can also prove a lost opportunity for those students who don’t recognize the opportunity at hand. To make the most of an internship, students or recent graduates should consider the following suggestions:
• Find one that’s the right fit. Some students accept an internship simply because it looks good on a resume. While it’s true an internship stands out to hiring managers or other human resources personnel, students must find the right fit to make the experience truly valuable.
For example, students who accept an internship outside of their major might not approach it with the same work ethic they would if they were to find an internship in a field they want to work in. That indifference, coupled with the lack of financial compensation commonplace with most internships, might lead to a less inspired effort, which won’t lead to a strong recommendation from bosses down the road. The recommendation could prove as important as the internship itself when it comes time to look for full-time work. So when seeking an internship, students should not simply settle on one because it’s offered. Rather, students should choose an internship that’s in a field they’re genuine ly interested in.
• Routinely meet with supervisors. Because most internships are during the summer, interns have a wa y of getting lost in the shuffle while their supervisors are away on vacation. Interns should meet, or at least discuss via the telephone or e-ma il, regularly with supervisors to review their performance. This exhibits enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, while also putting interns in a po sition to get the most out of their internships.
• Treat the internship like a lucrative full-time position. At times, being an intern can prove pret ty awful. Most interns don’t get paid, despite working long hours and wearing many hats for their employers. As difficult as it may seem at times, interns should treat their internships as if they’re getting paid lots of money. That means showing up on time, working hard, staying late if necessary, and most of all, not complaining. Negative attitudes have ruined many an intern. Interns must remember that an internship is not a right, but a privilege, one that can lay the foundation for a successful career. Treating an internship like a lucrative position helps interns stay focused and work hard, even when it’s tempting to kiss that nonexistent paycheck and long hours goodbye.
• Don’t be pigeon-holed. Some internships are better than others, and the best ones often rotate int erns throughout several departments. That enables interns to learn more than one aspect of the business, possibly helping them choose the area they li ke most and the area they would prefer to avoid when it comes time to job hunt.
Even if a company does not rotate its interns, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for an intern to le arn more than his or her job entails. Before going it alone, interns should discuss with their immediate supervisor if it’s possible to learn additional a spects of the business. Offer to come in on off days or stay late to see how the whole operation works. This also allows interns to meet more people, which can only help when the time comes to find full- time work.
• Remember it’s only temporary. Some interns love their internships and don’t mind working free for long hours. Others are not so lucky and fight the urge to quit on a daily basis. For the latter, the best advice is to remember an internship is only temporary. As hard as it can be to get out of bed and go work for no pay all day, it’s imperative interns keep a positive attitude regardless of how little t hey like their internship. Internships last roughly three months, so even the worst one with the worst boss will be over soon and students will still be able to make a valuable addition to their resume.

Motivation: Before changing careers, it’s best to sit down and honestly assess what is motiving your potential move. If you harbor a strong desire to pursue a passion and make it your career, then changing careers is probably something you must do. But changing careers because you feel if you are slighted by a current employer or you feel like changing for the sake of change, then you might want to reconsider. If you’re considering a change because of an issue with your present employer, try working out the issue before pursuing a career change. You might find the issue is a byproduct of miscommunication and not something to change careers over. If you want to change careers because you feel like you need a change, keep in mind how difficult the job market is and how vulnerable you might be if your next move does not pan out. Give your motivation some serious thought before making any career changes, and you’re less likely to regret your decision.
