TIDBITS® KEEPS THE BEAT WITH

MARCHING BANDSby Patricia L. Cook

This Tidbits examines where and when marching bands originated and other trivial matters to help us stay in step with the bands. • The first marching bands started many centuries

ago with military organizations. The needs of military groups to get thousands of troops moving in the same direction quickly, without mishaps, were best met if everyone stayed in rows, the same distance apart. Orderly movement was easiest if it was done in an organized manner. Because many groups did not have musical instruments, chants of, “Left – left, left, right, left,” giving instruction on which foot should be down helped accomplish the tasks. As military troops grew around the world, choruses of encouragement and sometimes humor were added.

• When available, drums were added to help troops stay together as they progressed along the way. Musical instruments were added through the years and melodies were great for keeping soldiers encouraged and giving them a sense of pride.

• During the Revolutionary War in America, soldiers marched to fifes and drums. The Civil War brought the development of drum and bugle corps. During the big wars: World War I and II, full brass, percussion and woodwind bands formed.

MARCHING BANDS (continued):• Early military troops in Scotland and some

places in Canada marched to drums and bagpipes. Some still use this style.

• Military traditions are still used by modern marching bands. Bands usually march in formation and use orders of “attention”, “about face” and “forward march.” Most marching band uniforms resemble military uniforms.

• The marching bands that most people think of are university, college, and high school bands that perform at football games and in parades. Halftime shows can be quite elaborate and require hours of training.

• The marching band credited with the first modern halftime show at a football game was the Marching Illini of the University of Illinois in 1907. It occurred at a game against the University of Chicago.

• The first band to break the tradition of military ranks and form a letter on the football field was Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The letter, of course, was the “Block P” for Purdue. The first time it was on the field was in 1907 under the direction of Paul Spotts Emrick who was the first band director and served the university band for 49 years, from 1905-1954.

• Emrick came up with the plan for the “Block P” after seeing a flock of birds flying in a “V” formation. He decided that if birds could make a letter a band surely could replicate the action in a formation on a football field. The Purdue “All American” Marching Band still forms the P before every home game.

• Purdue is also known for what is considered to be the “World’s Largest Bass Drum.” The original drum built by Leedy Corporation in Indianapolis in 1921 is still used today.

• The large drum is about eight feet (2.4 m) in diameter, nearly four feet (1.22 m) wide between the drum heads and more than 10 feet (3 m) high when mounted on the field carriage built for rolling it around. A crew of four bandsmen handling the drum must have accurate timing and placement for the two beaters to keep accurate time with the band.

March 4: in 1944, U.S. bombers struck Berlin for the first time. In 1964, Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa was convicted of jury tampering.

March 5: in 1770, the Boston Massacre took place as British soldiers, taunted by a crowd of colonists, opened fire, killing five people. In 1946, Winston Churchill delivered his “Iron Curtain” speech in Fulton, Mo.

March 6: in 1836, the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, fell to Mexican forces after a 13-day siege. In 1857, in its “Dred Scott” decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Scott, a slave who had escaped to the North, could not sue for his freedom in federal court.

March 7: in 1926, the first successful trans-Atlantic radio-telephone conversation took place. In 1936, Adolf Hitler ordered German troops to march into the Rhineland, thereby breaking the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Pact.

March 8: in 1965, the United States landed 3,500 Marines in South Vietnam as the buildup of U.S. forces there began. In 1968, the Fillmore East opened in the East Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. In 1983, President Reagan referred to communism as “the focus of evil in the modern world,” in what became known as the “Evil Empire Speech.”

March 9: in 1862, during the Civil War, the ironclads Monitor and Virginia (formerly called the Merrimac) clashed for five hours to a draw off Hampton Roads, Va. In 1954, CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow critically reviewed Wisconsin Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy’s anti-communism campaign on his television program See It Now.

March 10: in 1969, James Earl Ray pleaded guilty in Memphis, Tenn., to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Ray later recanted that plea, maintaining his innocence until his death in 1998. In 2011, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake and devastating tsunami struck northern Japan, resulting in nearly 20,000 deaths and radiation leaks from several nuclear-power reactors.

Answer to last week’s question: This week in 1837, Martin Van Buren was inaugurated president of the United States, succeeding Andrew Jackson.

This week’s question: In 1972, what presidential candidate was shot and paralyzed while campaigning?

ADHD and Natural CareThe number of children diagnosed with ADHD and treated with psychotropic drugs like Ritalin and Prozac has increased over 200% in recent years. Worse yet, the numbers of 2-4 year olds taking Ritalin have doubled. These medications are classified as “Class II Controlled Substances” which is in the same category as cocaine and speed.

Psychotropic drugs treat the effects of ADHD; hyperactivity, lack of ability to concentrate and inattentiveness, while ignoring the cause. How do we raise a generation to be “drug free” if they are raised in a medicine cabinet, which creates a distorted view of reality.

We must remember that the brain and nervous system control the entire human body and every function including maintaining proper chemical balance, healing and the ability to stay well.

Kids with ADHD usually have had some type of early life trauma to their spine that has created subluxation (when 2 bones in the spine misalign and cause disturbance to the flow of messages from the brain to the body). Add to this a bombardment of chemicals from foods and our environment; you end up with the perfect storm.

In order to address the true cause we need to detox the children of the chemicals and correct the disturbances in their nervous system for them to be fully balanced individuals.

To find out more about how you can get to the root of the cause, join us on March 13th at the Coquitlam Public Library for an ADHD Information Workshop

Lifestyle suggestions for Pre-diabetics Workable Lifestyle Changes:Start taking 30 minute-long brisk walks after lunch and dinner. Eat regularly with smaller portions and if you have a choice in your meal, always ask for a smaller portion Eat wisely and learn your Carbs:Limit carbohydrate intake per meal to 45 g (which is roughly equals to three pieces of bread) Milk, sweet beverages, fruits and wine all contains sugar and should be counted into the 45g per meal portion. A rule of thumb; each cup contains at least 15g Caution - White powders:Cut down on unnecessary sugar intake especially found in “healthy“ fruit juices, try shifting to tea instead. Make a habit of sprinkling less salt on your dishes. Keep a good record of four fundamental figures:Ask for a cholesterol test if you have not already done so Control body weight with wise diets and exercise Maintaining the three month’s average Blood sugar level A1C to a desirable level. Keep blood pressure under control. Other valuable actions:Talk to other supportive groups and go for community diabetic classes to learn the basics. Monitor and keep track of the upward or downward trends in all four fundamental figures. Talk to your doctor and plan an attainable course of action. Alternative remedies are out in the market but do not expect miracles. Be positive, take action today and you could see results in a few short months.

Life is given; Lifestyles are Chosen

Stay tuned for next week’s Lifestyle Bits to find out about Vigour Health and Beauty’s Lifestyle suggestions for those living with diabetes.

The ABC’s of tires(NC)—For many the process of choosing the right size tires for your vehicle can be a real mystery. Learning the basics before walking into your local tire shop will give you an advantage that could keep you safe this season.

Size does matter:When purchasing tires, your retailer should ask for your vehicles’ tire size. That long, complex string of letters and numbers can be confusing and few consumers know how to read them or understand how important tire size is to safety.

“It may seem like a small thing, but ensuring that you have the right size tire is crucial to your vehicle’s stability and your safety,” states tire expert Bill Hume, vice-president of Hankook Tire Canada. “Just as a

well-made and well-fitting pair of shoes is designed to protect your feet and allow for proper balance, tire size is engineered by auto manufacturers to provide optimum safety, fuel economy, and performance.”

Knowing the purpose of each letter and number will make tire size easier to decipher. Here’s an example using the Hankook Optimo H725 in a size of 195/65 R15:

• The first number, 195, is the tire width in millimetres.• The second number, 65, is the sidewall aspect ratio, the height of the tire expressed as a percentage of the tire’s width.• The second letter indicates internal construction. In this case, “R” stands for radial. This letter may be preceded by an additional letter indicating the tire’s speed rating.• The third number, 15, is the rim size in inches.• Learning the ABC’s of tires is easier than you think. For more information, visit www.hankooktire.ca or speak to your local tire retailer.

Bea is a sweet little cat with a perfect little face and eyes that follow you everywhere you go. This poor little girl was found as a skinny, starving stray that had been left alone in the cold. Bea was found by a kind person who was unable to keep her. She was brought to us and her tattoo was traced back to an owner who had passed away, and who’s family did not want her. Bea is gentle and gets along with the other cats in her room. She loves human companionship and will patiently wait for you to sit down so she can settle in your lap for some cuddles. She does have some health issues that will shorten her life. We really dread the thought of her spending her twilight hours in a shelter. We are praying that someone out there will give her a warm, safe home where she can spend her final days. Katie’s Place will be more than happy to adopt Bea out as a permanent foster and cover all her medical costs. Please come and

meet Bea...you will love her and she will love you right back.Sonny and his brother Willis came to Katie’s Place in 2011. Sonny and Willis were abandoned by their original owner and lived outdoors for a couple of years. A concerned neighbour fed them but when she had to move she brought the

brothers to Katie’s Place as she was unsure if anyone else would care for them. Willis died after coming to us and Sonny was left alone. Sonny is a very senior boy, probably over 17 years old. He is a sweet old man who is in good health, has great litter box habits and enjoys being brushed. He absolutely adores his canned food and does everything in his power to get the dish out of your hands so he can have a nibble. He is chatty and good natured. Sonny deserves so much more than to end his life in a shelter. It is bad enough that someone abandoned him on the streets as a senior, and even worse that his brother died leaving him all alone, but to see him grow older with us is truly heartbreaking. Come and meet Sonny. Like Bea he can be adopted as a permanent foster. We will cover his medical costs (if any), you will gain a great companion, and he will end his days knowing someone loves him.

“WRECK-IT RALPH’’: A video-game villain (voice of John C. Reilly) escapes from the contest to prove he’s not such a bad guy - and unwittingly sets loose a much greater danger, which he then has to recapture - in this fanciful, animated Disney fantasy. There are plenty of fun nods to classic characters as Ralph attempts to show he’s not just the nemesis of the more-embraced Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock’’). Jane Lynch, Sarah Silverman, Ed O’Neill (“Modern Family’’), Dennis Haysbert and Mindy Kaling also are heard. DVD extras: “making-of ’’ documentary; deleted and alternate scenes; “Paperman’’ short subject; video-game commercials. *** (

“RED DAWN’’: Foreign invaders turn young Americans into freedom fighters in this less-effective remake of the 1984 adventure, delayed from release long enough by MGM’s financial troubles for stars Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson to have had respective successes with “Thor’’ and “The Hunger Games’’ first (though they made this before those). Interestingly, the nationality of the enemies was altered digitally after filming, so as not to upset some overseas exhibitors. Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas, Adrianne Palicki (“Friday Night Lights’’), Connor Cruise (adopted son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan also star in the tale directed by Dan Bradley, stunt coordinator for most of the “Bourne’’ movies. **

“THE INTOUCHABLES’’: Based on a true story, this seriocomic French film by writer-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano earned international raves for its two stars ... veteran actor Francois Cluzet as a rich aristocrat suddenly incapacitated while paragliding, and Omar Sy (who won the Cesar, France’s equivalent of the Oscar, as best actor for this) as the much younger and more street-wise fellow hired to care for him. Though others are in the cast, the picture very much belongs to those actors, and their unlikely yet fabulous teamwork justifies it. DVD extras: deleted scenes. ***

“PLAYING FOR KEEPS’’: Gerard Butler’s charisma does much - if ultimately not enough overall - for this comedy-drama, as he plays a former soccer star whose personal and professional lives have taken downturns. He tries to put both back on track as he attempts to win back his ex-wife (Jessica Biel) while becoming the coach of his son’s sports team. In the latter role, he catches the eyes of several soccer moms (Catherine Zeta-Jones, Uma Thurman, Judy Greer). Dennis Quaid also appears. DVD extras: two “making-of ’’ documentaries; deleted scenes. **

“LAY THE FAVORITE’’: He’s back on “Die Hard’’ territory these days, but Bruce Willis has been doing lots of other work lately, an example being this comedy casting him as a veteran gambler who gets an unlikely “business’’ partner. She’s a former stripper played by Rebecca Hall (“The Town’’), and her expertise at predicting sports winners bodes well for them both. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joshua Jackson, Vince Vaughn and Laura Prepon also appear for director Stephen Frears (“The Queen’’). ***

“A DARK TRUTH’’: In one of her first major roles since the end of “Desperate Housewives,’’ Eva Longoria is teamed with Oscar winner Forest Whitaker as married environmental activists in this drama. They get into big trouble while trying to prove a powerful corporation is linked to a devastating massacre in Ecuador, prompting an ex-CIA man (Andy Garcia) to accept the mission to rescue them. Kim Coates and Deborah Kara Unger also appear. DVD extra: “making-of ’’ documentary. ***

Q: Why does my cat go crazy if I step on an ant? She’ll roll around on the spot. - W.G., Cyberspace. A: “I suspect it’s all about the smell,” says Vancouver, BC-based feline veterinarian Dr. Margie Scherk, editor, Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery. “I’m not certain of what’s happening, but here’s what we know. Cats are driven by pheromones (chemicals secreted by an animal that influences the behavior or development of other members of the same species). Ants are also influenced by pheromones (that’s how they know how to follow one another, for example). Perhaps, your cat is somehow sensing pheromones or the smell itself of crushed ants.”

MARCHING BANDS (continued):Bertha” and wonder where she fits in with the

above story about the “World’s Largest Bass Drum,” read on.

• Big Bertha is the large drum that belongs to the University of Texas. Created for the University of Chicago, Bertha’s first game was when Chicago played Princeton on October 23, 1922. When Chicago stopped its football program, band at the university was also discontinued. At that time, the large drum was put in storage.

• Colonel D. Harold Byrd, a Texas Longhorn band supporter purchased Bertha from the University of Chicago in 1955. Bertha’s dimensions are eight feet (2.4 m) in diameter, 54 inches (1.37 m) wide and more than 10 feet (3 m) high when mounted on her trailer. Called the “sweetheart of the Longhorn band,” Big Bertha is escorted by the “Bertha Crew.”

• Members of the Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity of Purdue challenged their Texas fraternity brothers to a drum showdown in 1961 to settle the question of which band had the largest bass drum. They planned the showdown at the fraternity’s national convention in Wichita, Kansas. Purdue kept its side of the promise and loaded their drum on a truck and headed west. They stopped in Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City and Topeka, pushing their drum through the streets showing off.

• When the Purdue students and their drum arrived in Wichita, they discovered that their Texas fraternity brothers didn’t bring their drum. By default, Purdue declared their drum as the “World’s Largest Drum.” Since then, the exact measurements of the Purdue Big Bass Drum have been kept secret, preserving the mystique of its existence.

• Marching bands exist in universities, colleges, senior and junior high schools for more than just football games. They also perform at other school events and parades. Many large parades across the country are magnificent venues for marching bands.

GOOD LUCK!Whether you spend hours seeking a four-leaf clover or have a favorite rabbit’s foot that you rub, you may wonder about the origins and realities of symbols of good luck. • The plant that is considered to be the original shamrock is the white clover, trifolium repens, plant. These true shamrocks sometimes produce four-leaf clovers. The way to know that these are the real thing is that the fourth leaf is smaller than the other three leaves.• According to the Free Online Encyclopedia, a shamrock is

“a plant with leaves composed of three leaflets. According to legend it was used by St. Patrick in explaining the doctrine of the Trinity; it is now used as the emblem of Ireland.”• St. Patrick was actually born in Britain, kidnapped and taken to Ireland as a slave when he was only 16. He later escaped and then returned to Ireland as a missionary. He used the native clover to explain the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people.• With four-leaf clovers it is said

that the first leaf is for faith, the second for hope, the third for love and the fourth for luck. In Irish tradition, the regular shamrock or 3-leaf clover represents the Holy Trinity: one leaf for each person of the Trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When a fourth leaf exists on a shamrock it is said to represent God’s grace.• The native 3-leaf clover, called a Shamrock, is the most popular national symbol of Ireland. • According to age-old legend, Eve carried a four-leaf clover from the Garden of Eden. • Sir John Melton wrote in 1620,

“If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing.”• For people who look more to “luck” than spiritual symbolism from clover, the leaves of a four-leaf clover representa four lucky characteristics: love, health, respect and wealth. • In the Celtic religion of the Druids in early Irish history, three was a mystical number. They considered the shamrock a sacred plant because of its three leaves that formed a triad, also called a trifoliolate plant.
