CHAIR Trevor Pang

Following an excellent District Changeover at Moonee Valley Race Course on Sunday 26th June, when District 9800 Governor 2010-2011, Iven Mackay, handed over to District 9800 Governor 2011-2012, Keith Ryall, we had a great Changeover Lunch on Sunday 3rd July, when last year’s Club President, Jo Cowling, handed over to myself. I am looking forward with some trepidation I must admit, to continuing the valuable work of Immediate Past President Jo.

We have been encouraged to become more computer literate, using our Club Website frequently and using FaceBook, as well as referring to the District Networker, for District Information. As a result of these changes the Bulletin, (“The Tiger Cub Rag”), will be able to become smaller. Looking forward to a successful and rewarding year for us all.

Email Inbox From:  IPP Nicole Nuthall (Melbourne Park) Re:   ROMAC Patient  Hi RCMP and friends,   I thought I would send through a bit of a progress report on Vai for those who are interested. Also below are a few items of clothing I am trying to source.

• Via arrived from PNG via Brisbane at 10.30pm on Monday night. When not at the hospital he and his father Maina (goes by his surname) are living at Punt Hill apartments on Davis Ave in South Yarra. They are both friendly and easy going, and their English is very good. Maina spent a year at college in Sydney in 1973, and he was there again in 1999, so he is quite comfortable in Melbourne, other than of course this cold weather. Vai is in year 11 at school, and he is 19 (keep getting his age wrong...). He is friendly but quiet. I imagine his confidence has taken a bit of a beating due to the appearance of his eye.

• On Tuesday Via spent a full day at the Alfred – pre‐admission and pre‐op procedures. Everything required was achieved along with a couple of extra diagnoses, and Professor Rosenfeld (his surgeon) managed to fit Vai in for a final pre‐op consultation.

• Wednesday he was back again for an MRI and another visit with the Neurosurgery team before a free afternoon to rest up for the operation.

• Vai had a long and difficult operation yesterday, but he seems to be in good spirits this morning. The tumour behind his eye had progressed further than they initially thought. It was wrapped tightly in and around the muscles at the back of the eye and unfortunately they were unable to remove it entirely. However they don’t think what’s left should cause him any problems. Cosmetically the surgery was a huge success. Apparently Via’s appearance has improved quite dramatically which is fantastic.

At present he is in bed 28, Ward 2 East, but may well have moved by tomorrow. Professor Rosenfeld expects Vai to be in The Alfred for about a week, and has told me he won’t be able to fly for 6 weeks after the operation: that time is needed for the air that’s entered the skull to dissipate.

Supporting healthier minds, bodies and communities through research, awareness and education

A ustralian Rotary Health is Australia's largest non-government funding body for mental illness research. We also fund research in other health related areas.

The genesis of Australian Rotary Health in 1981 was the mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The late Ian Scott, from the Rotary Club of Mornington, established Australian Rotary Health to support research into SIDS. As Australian Rotary Health grew so did the vision of medical research possibilities. Supported by Rotarians Australia wide, Australian Rotary Health was soon in a position to sponsor health research in areas that did not readily attract funding. Australian Rotary Health has a broad vision of health. We are a catalyst for projects that improve the quality of life for people who are least able to assist themselves.
