Q: When is a castle not a castle?
A: Apparently when it’s a bishop’s
palace – according to the castle
ranger who guided the group through
grounds, structure and history
of the site. The evidence for this
statement is that the spiral staircase
in the Gatehouse Tower is unusually
wide and rotates to the left and
is, therefore, undefendable as an
attacker is able to wield his weapon
with his right hand! Therefore, it can’t
be a castle (but it is). Confused? Then
take the tour!
The main features of the castle are
the gatehouse, the undercroft, castle
dungeons, the curtain wall and the
southwest tower. There are regular
guided tours of the dungeons and
towers but at other times these areas
are locked, for health and safety
reasons, which seems wise as access
to some areas is somewhat difficult.
The town of Newark grew up around
an important crossing of the River
Trent, where the Fosse Way and the
Great North Road converge. There was
a fortified Saxon manor here at least
as early as the 10th century, but that
was replaced by a motte-and-bailey
earthwork fortress around 1073. That
simple defensive structure was rebuilt
as an impressive stone castle in
1133 by Bishop Alexander of Lincoln.
Known as Alexander the Magnificent,
the powerful (and seemingly
somewhat pompous) Bishop also built
castles at Banbury and Sleaford, but
only Newark has survived.
In a charter generally thought to date
to 1135, King Henry I granted the
Bishop of Lincoln permission to build a
castle. The charter reads:
“Henry, King of England to all the
Barons and to the Sheriffs and to
his ministers and faithful men of
Nottinghamshire, Greeting. Know
ye, that I have granted to Alexander,
Bishop of Lincoln, that he may make
a ditch and rampart of his fishpond
of Niwerc upon the Fosseway and he
may divert the Fosseway through the
same town as he shall wish.”
Alexander also established a mint at
the castle. This early castle was most
likely of timber construction and was
rebuilt in stone towards the end of the
century. The largest gateway of any
castle in England graces this largely
12th century fortress.
The most famous event in the castle’s
long history came on 19 October

1216, when King John died here, after
consuming the infamous ‘surfeit of
peaches’. Tradition suggests that the
king died in the southwest tower, but
it is more likely that he was staying
in an apartment within the grand
gatehouse that dominates the site
today.
After John’s death one his knights,
Robert de Gaughy, seized the castle
and held it against the new king,
Henry III. Royal forces besieged
the castle and forced de Gaughy to
surrender after 8 days. The terms
were hardly onerous; he was allowed
to leave freely after agreeing to pay a
fine of £100.
The castle was successfully besieged
in 1217 by the Dauphin Louis of
France during his abortive bid for
the English throne, but after the
coup failed the castle reverted to the
Bishopric of Lincoln. Throughout the
medieval period Newark remained
under church control, but with the
Reformation that changed. In 1547
the castle was seized by the crown
and sold into private hands.
Newark was held for King Charles
I during the Civil War. Because it
controlled one of the main north/
south routes the castle was
considered of immense strategic
importance
and Parliament
besieged it on three
occasions. Finally in
1646 the garrison
surrendered, but
only after a direct
command from
Charles I. Parliament
ordered the castle destroyed so it
could never be held against them
again, but fate took a hand; plague
broke out in Newark town and the
destruction of the castle was halted.
Due to the Civil War destruction only
one-and-a-half sides of the castle still
stand - enough to give an idea of how
impressive the original fortress must
have been. The west front, facing
onto the river, has survived almost
complete.
The castle is a Scheduled Ancient
Monument, a ‘nationally important’
historic building and archaeological
site which has been given protection
against unauthorised change. It is
also a Grade I listed building and
recognised as an internationally
important structure.
Admission to the gardens is free but
we strongly recommend that you take
the informative and entertaining tours
which are conducted by the Castle
Ranger, bookable through the Tourist
Information Centre (01636 655765), or
Ranger’s Office (07971 486324).

The Delvers local history group,
was founded by Thelma Childs
in the mid-1980s and the group has
played a major role in promoting
and preserving the history of
Gainsborough. The group recently
met on the last day of September
2015 outside the Caskgate Street
surgery with guest Phyllis Peart, who
dedicated this new addition to the
blue plaque trail with Councillor Judy
Rainsforth who also lent her support
to the project.
The blue plaque trail originally
consisted of small engraved plaques
placed on timber plinths. The first
of these was unveiled by Thelma in
August 1997,
the next two
celebrated artist
Karl Wood, which
was sited in
Curtis Walk and
author, George
Elliot, which can
be found at the
United Services
Club. Over the
years the original plaques had become
faded, therefore, it was decided
to launch a project to have new
plaques made, this time cast in metal,
replacing some from the original
series, and others dedicated to new
places and faces connected with Old
Gainsborough.

Workhouse, today Aldi supermarket,

lost cannon, one of a pair that were
presented to Gainsborough and
Retford, today only Retford’s remains.
The next plaques were placed in Lea
village at the recently restored Dower
House, which was connected to the
Anderson family, who lived at Lea
Hall. This was the subject of Darron
Childs recent publication, ‘The Last
Baronets’. A further plaque was sited
at the Butler’s Pantry, in Lea Park
which recently commemorated the
40th anniversary of the opening of
Lea Park, when (the late) Marylyn
Webb accepted an invitation to
dedicate the site on the 28 May 2013.

Promoting and preserving local
history
Phyllis Peart who was born in
1919, had her book ‘Reminiscences’
published by The Delvers a few years
ago and now hopes to follow up
interest in her life as Gainsborough’s
original ‘Call the Midwife’ with a
collection of memories and stories
from her life that spans back to the
beginning of the NHS. Over the years
The Delvers have been involved
in many publications promoting
and preserving the history of Old
Gainsborough, including ‘All Our
Yesterdays’ which tells
the story in images, of
the massive changes
implemented both
to the structure and
layout of the town
after the Second World
War. The Delvers were
also instrumental in
the former award-winning ghost
trails that took place in the town
and in the very near future their
aim is to publish a new book with
a series of local history walks that
can be undertaken by anybody at
any time, featuring all The Delvers’
blue plaques, with a series of tales
associated with Old Gainsborough.
The Delvers local history discussion
groups take place fortnightly at
Gainsborough House opposite The
Old Hall.

Our Thorney Committee met at
the end of October and looked at
what we need to do next.
Hopefully more people will become
involved, in small working parties,
as we begin work on issues raised
through the CLP process. We already
have the Neighbourhood Watch
Scheme in place and the church is
soon to have new lighting installed.
People are looking at the improvement
of recreational facilities and it was
agreed that certain aspects of the CLP
e.g. Issue 40 (to improve lighting and
signage within the parish) are for the
parish council to deal with.
Another item raised during the
CLP (Issue 36) process was the
VOLUNTARY CAR SCHEME, and a
special meeting was held on MONDAY
26TH OCTOBER in church, to discuss
its future. Several volunteer drivers
and a regular user of the scheme
came to offer support. The car scheme
was started in 1988, due to the lack
of public transport, and has been
chiefly used to take people to medical
appointments, although it was also
used in the past to take people to the
Friendship Club when it was held at
Harby.
Although Doreen (formerly
Templeman and now Duffy) moved
from Thorney some years ago, she
has run the scheme right from the
start. Those needing a lift contact
Doreen and she contacts the drivers.
BUT Doreen intends to retire soon
and unless we can get new drivers
and someone to take over from her,
I’m afraid the scheme will come to an
end. As one of the users said, “Once
something like this goes, then we’ll
never get it back”. So our community-
led plan committee is appealing to
YOU!
In the CLP people asked for a car
scheme, people offered to drive and 40
said that they would like to be able to
use the service. Others said that they
would help with fundraising. WE NEED
YOUR HELP NOW! Please let me know
if you are interested in becoming a
volunteer driver, in using the scheme,
or if you are interested in taking over
from Doreen. This is URGENT!

October
October saw the tail end of a very
special year for all counties and
districts of the WI - and as I write that,
I tend to wonder whether it is the
word ‘Institute’ that prevents some
ladies from joining us. Well, it was
started a hundred years ago when the
word was used a lot in polite society,
and perhaps our current leaders feel
a desire to remember this because
of our success. Anyway this year has
seen so many celebrations, such as
the keen interest of the Queen and
her acknowledgment by inviting our
local presidents to the taking over of
Harrogate in the middle of it all for a
grand occasion to which all members
were invited.
Our annual dinner was, as always,
well attended and well cooked!
Some ladies wore tiny hats, others a
favourite dress which as all female
readers will appreciate, made our own
special gesture. The food as always
was delicious, and after coffee we
were entertained by ‘The Game Birds’,
a small group of ladies from a large
choir of folk singers. They were quite
unique, very well-matched and with
their own accompaniment.
Now it is back to the monthly meeting
and our various trips. Our speaker
for this month was Nicola Morris
who gave a very thoughtful picture
of depression, particularly relating to
bipolar. With reference to the many,
perhaps thousands of sufferers
today, she gave a picture of the onset,
escalation and treatment which can
be used to help relieve distress.
The President asked for members’
annual help to provide presents at
Christmas for those suffering forms
of mental health, gifts to be brought
to the November meeting. She also
reminded us about the Christmas
concert, to be held in Lea village hall
on December 6th at 3pm.
The monthly competition was won
by Janet Willcock, followed by Elise
Hawker, Rosemary Procter and Alison
Brownlow. The raffles went to Janet
Willcock, Barbara Gilbert, Christine
Hollis, Elise Hawker and Pat Green.

Our CHRISTMAS DAY 9am Holy Communion will be held atSt George’s, Clifton
We would love to see you at any of our services
PRoMISe PRoGRAMMe Thank you to all who responded to our Promise Programme, with the
promise of regular giving to St Helen’s. Regular giving enables us to plan our spending more efficiently and will help to cover insurance costs as well as other overheads. If you would like to take part in this scheme it is not too late and any donation will be gratefully received. If you need another form or an envelope, please give me a call. We also appreciate
people who give their time and use their talents to look after the church building and help in many ways. If you would like to help, please let me
know. Thank you.
oTHeR eVeNTS Held in church THANK YOU once again to those who gave so generously, around harvest time, to our collection of items for FRAMEWORK, a charity which supports
homeless people in the Newark area. We had a bumper collection! Our next collection for the Trussell Trust charity will be in January. Once again foods in tins, packets and jars with a long shelf life are appreciated,
as are household items such as toilet rolls and toiletries like toothpaste and brushes, soap, deodorant and shower gel etc. After Christmas, particularly in the cold weather, it would be good to have packets of biscuits, tinned puddings and chocolate bars donated as a real treat for those who find
themselves in times of hardship. Thank you.
Our coffee morning held to coincide with the library van visit continues, every four weeks. Next dates are: 23rd December and 20th January. Come
along for a hot drink, some homemade biscuits and catch up on all the latest news, any time between 10.30 and 12 noon.
