Trent Valley Way
The route through Trent Vale is now agreed with new
sections from Littleborough, south of Gainsborough, to
the Humber, all following existing Rights of Way. ‘We
tried really hard with Debby Braund at Lincolnshire Rights
of Way to find a route on the Lincolnshire side to come
through Gainsborough but there just weren’t enough
paths near the river,’ said OnTrent Project Manager Julie
Wozniczka.
However, an alternative route has been agreed from
Littleborough, passing right by the bridge at
Gainsborough through West Stockwith to Haxey, then Isle
of Epworth, via Scunthorpe to finish at Alkborough where
there is a fantastic ancient maze at Julian’s Bower.
The next phase has now begun and Ontrent are working
with secondary schools in Gainsborough to design guides
for a series of short walks from Littleborough to West
Stockwith.
We’d like to encourage everybody to walk along the
Trent, our country’s third longest river. If you would like
to see the route and follow progress go to:

RSPB Beckingham Marshes
Due to the drought that we experienced in 2011, it was
deemed necessary to amalgamate some of our original
scrapes into single, much larger ‘megascrapes’. These
are still very shallow in profile, but are deeper in the
centre and as such, should hold some standing water
until the end of the breeding season.
We have also had three wind pumps (funded by Natural
England and Biffaward) installed, which will enable us to
pump water on to the site to maintain higher water levels
in the ditches and a high water table in the fields.
Both of these developments should help to create the
ideal breeding conditions for wading birds such as
lapwings that we hope to attract.
RSPB Langford Lowfields
The development of the reserve took a major step
forward between September and December last year, with
the redistribution of 130,000 cubic metres of earth over
50 hectares.
The project, which was funded by Tarmac plc, SITA and
Biffaward, has been created using the latest thinking on
reedbed design. There has been a great emphasis on
getting the optimal conditions for breeding bitterns, but
also plenty of drier, peripheral areas designed in to
optimise the amount of biodiversity that the site can
attract and support.
Cow appeal goes live!
Over the next two years, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust
is aiming to raise £25,000 to purchase their own herd of
Lincoln Red cattle, which will graze and help
preserve wildflower meadow habitats in Nottinghamshire,
especially in the Trent Vale area.
Over the past 50 years 98% of the UK's wildflower
meadows have been lost. This valuable habitat was
originally a product of traditional livestock farming,
where farmers would graze locally bred cattle on their
land.
Before Christmas the Trust purchased three cows which
will be put out to graze grasslands in Besthorpe and
Girton later this year.
If you own or know of any areas of grassland that would
benefit from being grazed and you would be interested
in being involved in this project, then please contact
Jenni Hignett on 07896 954695 or
