Selectingqualitytrees:Plantingqualitytreesbeginsbychoosingvigorous,structurallysoundtreesfromthenursery.Strongtreeshavestraightroots,athicktrunk,andonecentraldominantleadergrowingstraighttothetop(Fig.1).Therootcollar(theuppermostroots)shouldbeinthetop2inchesoftherootball.
Diggingthehole:AFirm,Flat‐bottomedholewillpreventtreesfromsinking.Digtheholeonlydeepenoughtopositiontherootcollarevenwiththelandscapesoilsurface(Fig.2).Usearototillerorshoveltoloosensoilinanareathreetimesthesizeoftherootball.Thisloosesoilpromotesrapidrootgrowthandquickestablishment.
Staking:Stakingholdstreeserectandallowstherootballtoanchor.Securethetrunkatthepointwherethetreestandsstraight.Asecondstaketieddirectlytothetrunkmadeofbamboomayberequiredtostraightentheuppertrunk.
Mulching:Alayeroforganicmulch,suchasleaflitter,shreddedbark,orwoodchips,helpsprotecttreerootsfromtemperatureextremesandconservessoilmoisture.Mulchalsohelpspreventgrassfromcompetingwiththetreeforwaterandnutrients.Themulchedareamakesiteasiertooperatemowersandweedeaterswithouthittingthetrunkandcompactingsoil.Applymulchtoadepthof3to4inches(slightlythinnerontopoftherootball).
Pruning:Trainingyoungtreespromotesstructurallysoundgrowthandoveralltreehealth.Cutbackorremovecodominantstems(stemsthatcompetewiththecentralleader)toencouragegrowthinthecentralleader(below).
