Changing the World of Water Treatment Technology

While liquid chemicals remain the most popular solution, more and more water treatment specialists are turning to solid chemicals to treat the water in their boiler and cooling-tower systems.

Historically speaking, solid chemicals have played a prominent role in water treatment, specifically in the first half of the 20th century when they were used to prevent the corrosion and biological growth that could lead to catastrophic boiler failures.

By mid-century, however, liquid chemicals, buoyed by their ability to be easily blended, had replaced their solid counterparts.

While liquid chemicals remain the top choice among specialists, the tide appears to be turning back toward the use of solid chemicals for a number of important reasons; namely, the use of solid chemicals:

• Reduces shipping costs• Reduces inventory space• Reduces disposal costs• Eliminates drum-handling and disposal• Reduces caustic discharge to sewer systems• Reduces worker exposure to hazards• Increases energy-efficiency• Positions companies using them as environmentally

conscious “green” operators

TechnologySolid DissolversSolid Chemical is diluted by water sprayed up into an inverted bottle of chemical or the bottom of a chemical disk. This ‘make-up’ process leads to the dissolution of the solid chemical product and the filling of a reservoir with diluted chemical.

This diluted chemical is fed into the system from the reservoir. As the level of the reservoir lowers, so an integral primary float drops, triggering a primary solenoid valve which activates the water spray once again. The reservoir will then refill with diluted chemical raising the primary float until it reaches the shut-off point and closes the solenoid, thereby deactivating the spray.

This cycle will continue automatically dependant on demand in the system.

Installed directly in the water supply line, the injector operates without electricity, using water pressure as the power source.

The water drives the injector, which pulls the required percentage of concentrate directly from the chemical solution container. The concentrate is mixed with the water inside the pump and the water pressure forces the mixed solution downstream.

The injection ratio of chemical concentrate stays constant and accurate regardless of variations in flow or pressure.

The injection rate is set by lining up the top of the ratio sleeve with desired ratio on the scale. The amount of injected concentrate is proportional to the amount of water coming into the injector: i.e. adjustment at 1% = 1:100 = 1 volume of concentrate + 100 volumes of water entering the injector.

overflow protection• Includes adjustable pressure gauge• Translucent body allows viewing of water level in

reservoir• Takes advantage of the reduced transportation and

storage costs, and worker safety benefits of solid chemistry

DESIGNED FOR CHEMICAL RESISTANCEMoulded parts are made of polypropylene and polyethylene; metal parts are made of Nitronic 50 steel for maximum chemical resistance.

INTEGRATED BACK-UP PROTECTIONThe unit contains a second reservoir and float assembly which is activated should the primary reservoir overflow. This back-up feature shuts off the water flow to prevent system overflow.

SPECIALIZED NOZZLE TECHNOLOGYSpray nozzles are moulded polypropylene to avoid chemical attack. Four spray patterns are available to ensure optimum dissolve rates.

TWO PRODUCT CONTAINERS EXTEND REPLACEMENT INTERVALBoth containers of the treatment product are sprayed simultaneously, allowing the reservoir to fill more quickly. In addition, the two containers allow replacement of product to be extended to double the time of single container units, for accounts with low visit frequency or high chemical use.

Operating principle

Installed directly in the water supply line, the injector operates without electricity, using water pressure as the power source. The water drives the injector, which pulls the required percentage of concentrate directly from the chemical solution container. Inside the patented mixing chamber the concentrate is mixed with the water and the water pressure forces the mixed solution downstream. The amount of concentrate will be directly proportional to the volume of water entering the injector, regardless of variations in flow or pressure.

The PZ Series is the most flexible and accurate electronic diaphragm metering pump in the world!

• The PZD Series pumps offer higher capacities. These models feature an extra large keyboard and the injection rate can be entered directly in millilitres per minute.

• PZIG Models offer capacities typically requiring motor driven pumps. Special models easily handle viscosities of 1000 cP (up to 4000 cP at reduced volume). Powerful onboard controls allow proportional flow rate, pH and residual chlorine control by direct analog connection eliminating the PID Controller and Inverter (plus the control panel to house them), that are required by similar sized motor driven pumps.
