Clarkson College ATA: the Netherlands & Germany

Day 1: Sunday, April 29 Depart We depart on our transatlantic flight to Amsterdam. Day 2: Monday, April 30 Amsterdam1 We arrive this morning in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, where medieval gables, timeworn churches, and tranquil courtyards set the stage for a vital, exuberant culture. One hundred miles of canals trace their way through a city of amazingly diverse architecture—from quaint 17th-century half-timbered houses to patrician Louis XIV manors with elaborate cornices and frescoed ceilings. We take a canal cruise and visit the Anne Frank House as part of our city tour. B2 Day 3: Tuesday, May 1 Amsterdam A picturesque drive awaits us as we wind through the pastoral Dutch countryside along the bollenstreek (bulb fields) lined with joyful spring flowers to reach Lisse, where we tour the Keukenhof, a beautiful park with lakes and watercourses, old trees, and the world's largest open-air flower show. Our timing is perfect because the park is open only two months each year. After ample time to admire the display of 6,000,000 million flowers, we drive south to Delft, a city famous for its blue Delftware. We visit the Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, the Royal Delftware Factory dating from the 17th century, to observe Dutch artists at work. Tonight we enjoy a medieval dinner and minstrel music at the Stadsherberg de Mol. B, D Day 4: Wednesday, May 2, 2018 Amsterdam Today is a free day to set off on your own discovery-learning adventures. B Day 5: Thursday, May 3 Cologne After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and visit the van Gogh Museum before departing for Cologne (Köln), our home for the next two nights. En route, we stop in Gouda, a Dutch city south of Amsterdam famous for the seasonal cheese market held in its medieval market square. At the Gouda Cheese Museum, we learn all about the production of Gouda and enjoy free time before leaving behind the land of windmills and tulips. B Day 6: Friday, May 4 Cologne This morning we tour a vibrant city founded by the Romans in the 1st century. From the Severinus Bridge we enjoy a tranquil view of spires and belfries that front the Rhine. A grand twin-spired Gothic cathedral is the centerpiece with its 56 immense pillars, magnificent stained glass, and medieval sculptures. We explore the interior of Cologne Cathedral and the Rathaus, the oldest city hall in Germany. The town that gave the world the most familiar of all fragrances today offers a fascinating look at classic and contemporary Dutch and German art. We view this

art first hand at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, which features a world-class collection of old masters. The balance of the day is yours to enjoy on your own. B Day 7: Saturday, May 5 Berlin Today we make our way across central Germany to the historically rich capital of Germany, the most powerful country in Europe. Berlin is our home for the next five nights. B Day 8: Sunday, May 6 Berlin After breakfast we meet our local guide for a panoramic tour to view such landmarks as the Victory Column, Brandenburg Gate, and Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, as well as Alexanderplatz and Potsdamer Platz. We also take time to visit the Memorial to the Murdered Jews, the Reichstag (German Parliament) and its famous dome, and Berlin Cathedral in all its Romanesque splendor. Tonight we enjoy a Löwenbräu dinner at a local restaurant. B, D Day 9: Monday, May 7 Berlin Today we visit Check Point Charlie Museum. Founded by a human rights activist, the museum is like no other and explores the history of the Berlin Wall and the stories of those so deeply affected by it. We then see a conserved part of the Berlin Wall and stop by East Side Gallery, a section of the Wall dedicated to street art. This afternoon we travel north outside the city to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial. Completed in 1936, Sachsenhausen (Saxons’ Houses) was the first camp built under the infamous SS chief Heinrich Himmler. Today it stands as a sober memorial to its victims. B Day 10: Tuesday, May 8 Berlin Today’s plan is for students and those earning education hours to visit a university hospital. The balance of the day is yours to enjoy on your own. B Day 11: Wednesday, May 9 Berlin Today is a free day to set off on your own discovery-learning adventures. B Day 12: Thursday, May 10 Return We transfer to the airport for our return flight home. B
