Yanaizu and Hongo Pottery: Town-Exploring CourseYanaizu Town’s symbolic Enzoji Temple , dedicated to the “Fukuman Kokuzo Bosatsu” (the bodhisattva of wisdom), is a famous temple with a history of over 1,200 years. The following story is associated with the temple: A long time ago, the Japanese monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai), received a sacred tree from a virtuous priest in the courts of the Tang dynasty. He split the tree into three pieces, and floated them out to sea. Upon his return to Japan, he found that one of these three pieces had drifted to Yanaizu. Hongo is also the home of Aizu-Hongo pottery which has the longest history of any pottery style in the Tohoku District. The castle is said to be reminiscent of the beauty of a crane. Known as the site of the Boshin War from the late Edo period, it has also served as the setting for a few TV series. Enjoy the fantastic view of Aizu from the observation deck at the top of the five-story main castle. Perhaps you’ll meet a samurai!

A walk round the Goshiki-Numa Ponds[ About 70 minutes on foot; distance: about 3.6km ]

Walk along the paths at the Goshiki-Numa Ponds, which are mysteri-ously varied colors, including blue and green. It is popular spot, even among novice hikers. Enjoy the majestic nature and alpine foliage!

1:10pm - 2:30pm Lake Hibara and the Lakeside Area Sightseeing“Lake Hibara” is the largest lake in Urabandai, and was created by the collapse of the volcanic mountain during the eruption of Mt. Bandai in 1888. After sightseeing by excursion boat on the lake (adult - 1,100 yen, required time ‒ 30 minutes), shopping is also available at the Urabandai Bussankan (a local product/souvenir shop).

Aizuyanaizu WalkYanaizu Town Symbol: Fukuman Kokuzo Bosatsu Enzoji Temple,The Saito Kiyoshi Museum features the works of the world-renowned printmaker, Saito Kiysoshi’s” series of wood cuttings depicting winter in Aizu: (Admission Fee: 510 yen Opening Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm) For lunch, enjoy the handmade buckwheat soba noodles. You can also buy special, local products at “Michi-no Eki, Aizu-Yanaizu.” All of the locations listed above are within walking distances, so feel free to enjoy the sites.

A walk around the home of Aizu-Hongo pottery;the oldest pottery style in the Tohoku Area.Stroll through the home of Aizu-Hongo pottery, which has the longest history of any pottery style in the Tohoku District! Hongo pottery in a variety of shapes and sizes are just a 15 minute walk from the station. About 100 pieces of local pottery and porcelain are displayed at the Hongo Information Center, along with an explanation of the history of Aizu-Hongo pottery. Find your favorite coffee-cup and teapot!

Kaeikura, operating continuously since its foundation in 1850, is a 3-floor wooden building with a dignified stairwell that currently serves as a sake brewery. The facility also includes a mash warehouse, elegant, old tatami room, shops, and a stylish cafe. This spot is popular for strolling through the lower castle town.

4:00pm - 4:45pm A Stroll through the Retro Townscapeof Nanoka-machiTourists can also enjoy a stroll through town. Starting from Nanukamachi Station, drop by the cafés and traditional Japanese sweet shops of this retro townscape.
