your musical tastes.” The cast, which is renowned for their musical versatility, performs everything from Southern Gospel, to swing, to pop and rock classics. “If the question is, what do John Denver, James Taylor, Buck Owens and the Brian Setzer Orchestra have in common? The answer is AMT’s 2014 show,” says Sexton.

In the past seven years, AMT’s exceptionally talented cast has brought home a total of four awards from the W.Va.’s Division of Tourism, and in 2013, AMT was awarded the Trip Advisor Certifi cate of Excellence for having a 5-star average rating on its site.

On the other hand, the railroad offers multiple excursion options to experience the beautiful scenery of West Virginia in a one-of-a-kind fashion.

The Cheat Mountain Salamander, for example, takes you through some of the wildest mountain wilderness you will ever experience, and the Durbin Rocket, operated from the Durbin, W.Va. depot, allows you to experience a rare operating steam locomotive: Old No. 3 is one of only three operating Climax geared logging locomotives on Earth.

If you’re interested in a truly special dining experience, try the Mountain Explorer Dinner Train, while the New Tygart Flyer features two mountain grades, an “S” curve tunnel, and

a trip to the pristine “High Falls of Cheat,” an 18-foot high waterfall in the West Virginia wilderness.

Christmas is a special time to visit Elkins, as well. AMT and the railroad offer special seasonal options that have become a tradition for so many families, including the extremely popular Polar Express, based on the beloved book by Chris Van Allsburg and holiday feature fi lm.

Visit www.americanmountaintheater.com or call 888-943-4743 for more information on shows. AMT also offers a variety of vacation packages to fi ll a long weekend or an overnight getaway, featuring exciting excursions with scenic train rides, unique local dining and comfortable lodging, to a “date-night” dinner and a show package. Visit Prabhupada’s Palace of GoldPalace of Gold —

“America’s Taj Mahal”

CNN in July 2012 — “One of the Eight Religious Wonders to See in the U.S.”

New York Times — “Welcome to Heaven” Washington Post — “Almost Heaven”

In 1968, the New Vrindaban Community was founded in the beautiful and peaceful Appalachian Mountains in the rural West Virginia Panhandle. Named after one of India’s most holy places, New Vrindaban has been a place of pilgrimage for thousands of visitors each year. Out of love for their spiritual leader, the devotees constructed the famous Palace of Gold as the new home for Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, today’s largest religious movement within Hinduism. Srila Prabhupada was an extraordinary author, teacher and saint.

The Palace of Gold is reminiscent of an Indian kingdom. It hosts award-winning rose gardens. Inside, see sunlit colors through 31 stained-glass windows refl ected in crystal chandeliers and mirrored ceilings. Walk upon intricate marble fl oors that include 52 varieties of imported marble and onyx.

In the Grand Hall hangs a giant French chandelier over 150 years old. Murals depicting ancient Indian classics are painted on the ceiling in the tradition of Renaissance masters. Walls and pillars are accented with semi-precious stones and pure gold. Under the 30-ton main dome is a 4,200-piece crystal ceiling.

Four royal peacock windows display more than 1,500 pieces of hand-crafted stained glass. Peacock and lotus motifs pervade the Palace, etched into numerous windows and carved into doors. Peacocks are traditionally associated with royalty and Lord Krishna, who wears a peacock feather in his hair.

MUST-SEE ADDITIONAL ON-SITE ATTRACTIONS:>> Take a guided tour at the Krishna temple at 11 a.m.

and 3:30 p.m. (reservations for groups recommended) with its very artistic décor and wonderfully ornate deities

Visit FallingwaterFallingwater

Fallingwater, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most widely acclaimed

works, was designed in 1935 for the family of Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann. Construction of the house began in 1936, and the house’s acclaim has grown steadily since that time. Today, Fallingwater is considered “One of the 12 landmarks that will change the way you see the world,” according to Travel + Leisure magazine.

Perhaps better than any single work, Fallingwater exemplifi es Wright’s concept of organic architecture: the harmonious union of

art and nature. The key to the setting of Fallingwater is the waterfall over which it is built. Historically, the falls were a focal point of the Kaufmanns’ activities, and the family indicated to Wright their desire to locate their weekend house near them. Much to their surprise, Wright designed the house to rise above the waterfall,

rather than face it. The Kaufmanns adopted Wright’s original scheme with few changes.

Completed with a guest and service wing in 1939, Fallingwater was constructed of sandstone quarried on the property and was built by local craftsmen. The stone serves to separate reinforced concrete “trays,” dramatically cantilevered over the stream.

Fallingwater was the weekend home of the Kaufmann family from 1937 until 1963, when the house, its contents and grounds were entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy by Edgar Kaufmann Jr. Fallingwater is the only major Wright work to come into the public domain with its setting, original furnishings and artwork intact.

Fallingwater was named the “Best all-time work of American architecture” in a poll of members of the American Institute of Architects, and it was designated a “Place of a Lifetime” by National Geographic Traveler.

A Sweet Escape Sweet Escape Without the Long Drive

W ant to get away? Just north of Pittsburgh, Butler County provides a low-cost escape that doesn’t require

fl ying or a lengthy drive. Create a memorable experience in award-winning towns. Butler, the birthplace of the Jeep, was voted 7th Best Small Town in America by Smithsonian Magazine. Cranberry Township was voted Best Place to Raise Kids in Pennsylvania by Bloomberg Businessweek. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg … Butler County is easily accessed from I-79, I-80, the PA Turnpike and Routes 422, 19 and 8. There’s plenty to do, from exploring museums and art galleries to enjoying the scenery of parks and the rolling countryside. Relax at the spa, hit the greens or do a wine-tasting. You’re cordially invited to spend some time getting familiar with festive and friendly Butler County.

The best way to experience Butler County is with an Offi cial Visitors Guide. Not only will you fi nd information on events, but also itineraries, great stories, maps and a discount card. The Val-U-able Treasure discount card offers you savings at over 70 restaurants, shops, fun sites and accommodations. Don’t visit without one!

In the 2014 visitors guide, one of the feature stories is on local top chefs. Pittsburgh is becoming a culinary destination,

and that talent is trickling north. Read about some amazing chefs who have chosen Butler County to open a restaurant, then visit for a meal you won’t soon forget! Favorites include RestaurantECHO, an upscale establishment which prepares local foods. In Harmony, Burgh’ers serves up “the best burgers in the ’Burgh.” In downtown Butler, the unique “Chop Shop” has a creative menu and a

fun automotive atmosphere where you are encouraged to write on the bathroom walls. This is just a “taste” of all of the great eateries in Butler County.

To add a little something to your getaway, visit during one of the many festivals and events that happen all year long. Summer is especially packed with fun, from the North Washington Rodeo to the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival. Events are a great time to explore the quaint Main Streets and get a feel for small town life. A calendar is maintained regularly on www.VisitButlerCounty.com.

Butler County’s most popular site, Moraine State Park, is the third-largest state park in Pennsylvania, centered around 3,000-acre Lake Arthur. Just about any outdoor activity you can think of can happen at the park, and even some more unique ones you might not think of like disc golf, geocaching and windsurfi ng. SurfSUP Adventures offers paddleboarding excursions on the lake. The North Country Trail, the nation’s longest National Scenic Trail also runs through the park. And, Moraine has one of the top-ten most technical mountain-bike trails in the WORLD.

In addition to Moraine, there is plenty of other awesome greenspace! Jennings Environmental Education Center has the only protected prairie in the state. In late July/early August, the spectacular purple Blazing Star fl ower blooms. Guided hikes and even a Celebrate the Bloom event take advantage of this beauty.

Two great freebie ideas are the drive-it-yourself tours, Washington’s Trail and the Butler County Barn Trail. Follow in the footsteps of 21-year-old George Washington during his dangerous 1753 mission. The Washington’s Trail Brochure shares a lot of great history and outlines the scenic drive. The Barn Trail features 16 different barns along three routes; some are available for scheduled tours and each has its own unique history.

Speaking of history, history buffs will fi nd their place in Butler County, too. Many museums and historical societies

preserve the region’s rich past. Be sure to check out the calendar ahead of time for neat

hands-on and living-history events. A must-see is the Maridon Museum,

a museum of ancient Asian art and culture, also featuring German Meissen porcelain.

History can also be found in the quaint towns of Saxonburg

and Harmony. The fi rst National Historic Landmark District in

Pennsylvania can be found in Harmony, along with charming shops, a museum and

more. Another delightful town is Saxonburg. There you’ll also fi nd shopping, history and dining, but something a bit more — a sizeable replica of the Brooklyn Bridge can be found in Roebling Park. This was constructed in homage to the town’s founder, John Roebling who not only designed the bridge, but also invented the

Something you won’t fi nd in the city is camping — glamping for those who don’t do so well in the outdoors and camping for those who are at peace sleeping under the stars. A wide variety of accommodations are available from modern cabins to primitive tenting sites and even yurts. Most of the campgrounds offer special entertainment and activities for the whole family.

If camping just isn’t for you, you’ll also fi nd great hotels and cozy bed-and-breakfasts. A B&B stay might be just what you need to get away from work; from kids; from routines for a weekend. A day at OSIRIS Day Spa will melt your troubles away.

Shop till you drop in the many unique shops sprinkled across quaint, small towns. Antiques, décor, clothes and gifts are just a few of the things you’ll fi nd. One-of-a-kind items are also

available such as alpaca products and Butler County-made foods. You can even get
