By Josh Randt Sports Editor T he first-ever GSL trap shoot- ing team will participate in the 2013 Minnesota State High School Clay Target League (MSHSCTL) this year. The team is lead by head coach Doug Fegley of Stewart. Fegley has been teaching firearm safety courses through community ed- ucation at Shady Lanes Sportsmen Club, south of Glencoe, for approxi- mately 10 years. At a time when the words “gun” and “school” evoke a wide array of emotions, Fegley said the feedback he has received has been good. “The community has very much welcomed what we’re doing here,” Fegley said. “The majority of feed- back that I have heard has been good ... we’ve had an excellent response from different groups and stores with- in the community. They’ve raised about $5,000, which helps pay for am- munition and range fees.” Some of that has also come from concession sales and GSL Panther Booster club donations. While the community seems to be in favor of it, the kids have responded well simply in the number of partici- pants. “Last summer we did a test run and had a sign up for the program,” Feg- ley recalled. “We were showing 10-15 participants, 20 at max. On Feb. 25, we had 33 students signed up, which is awesome. It shows the school board that there’s a lot of serious people thinking about this, and we’re trying to give a new view of an athletic sport.” Fegley hopes that trap shooting will gain recognition by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) in the coming years, to offer kids an- other from of competition at the high school level. “Teaching firearm safety, I always get asked the same question: ‘What can I do after I pass the class?’” Feg- ley said. “This allows kids who have completed firearm safety to use knowledge gained from the class to- ward hunting or the lifelong sport of shooting clay pigeons.” Currently, the sport is in a two-year probation period with the MSHSL. It will go in front of the board in 2014 and could possibly be recognized as a varsity sport. “Then it’ll be treated like any other sport where kids can letter,” Fegley said. “I really hope this does become a permanent activity. I want to see it blossom and gain the same amount of acknowledgment as football, baseball or any other varsity sport.” Since it started in 2001, high school trap shooting has grown substantially over the years in Minnesota. From 2001 to 2008, there were only three teams with a total of 30 shooters. This season, there are 115 teams comprised from 215 schools, with 3,400 shooters in the state. Trap shooting is a co-ed sport. Partici- pants must be in grades sixth through 12, and possess a Minnesota Firearm Safety Training Certificate. Ally By Josh Randt Sports Editor The Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field teams have the season’s indoor meets behind them after the event in Becker on Tuesday, April 2. Though it was an indoor meet, the kids were happy to get out, participate and ac- tually post some times and score some points, coach Robb DeCorsey said. “This one counted. We’re going to improve as the meets go on, but the big thing was that they got to com- pete,” DeCorsey said. It may be early in the season, but the results from Becker look promis- ing. The boys destroyed their competi- tion, posting a team score of 86.5 with conference opponent Litchfield in second with 53.5. The girls looked strong and turned in a second-place finish with 54.5 team points, just behind Litchfield’s 60.5 points. The season is still young, which offers plenty of time for improve- ment and lineup changes, so that everyone is hitting their stride toward the end of May, DeCorsey said. The boys have had some success over the past few years, earning a state championship in the 4x400- meter relay last season. But this year’s key to success hinges on the underclassmen stepping up to fill some gaps, and some stable senior leadership. “Ryan Kuester’s been on varsity for four years, and we’re looking for him to return to state,” DeCorsey said. “Greg Ober was part of the 4x4 state champs last year. We’ve lost three out of the four legs for that event, but Greg should have a big year. Those two guys are the big leaders of the team.” Senior Trent Draeger should shore up the field events for the Panther boys and, hopefully, make his first state appearance. At Tuesday night’s event, Draeger finished first in the high jump and long jump, and second in the triple jump, single-handedly manufacturing 16 of the Panthers’ 86.5 points. Watch for seniors Tanner Konen and Luke Weiers to help Draeger with field points in the pole vault. “Tanner tied for first Tuesday night with 11.6 feet, and Luke made it to 11 feet,” DeCorsey said. “Two kids going over 11 feet at a meet, that’s huge. We’ve never gone that high in the pole vault before.” The seniors seem to have the speed and field covered. Distance running is where the underclassmen take over. “We lost some guys from last year who ran distance for us. The guys who have looked the best so far have been sophomores,” coach said. “The younger guys might struggle a bit but they’ll become more consistent as the season goes on. We’ve only been outside three or four times.” Though it is a whole new year with new obstacles and opponents to over- come, the boys’ mindset seems to be in a good place: serious, yet light- hearted. “We’re excited. We’ve got a lot of young people,” Kuester said. “It’s going to be a building year.” “But it’s our last season, and we want to go out with a bang,” Draeger added. “So we might as well break a few records,” Ober said nonchalantly as the group laughed. “The three of us started at a young age. We’ve all been competing on varsity now for about four years,” Kuester said. “We all have pretty high standards now,” Ober added. Seems like everything they are going through is par for the course. The seniors girls, on the other hand, are rather excited about the possibilities of the upcoming season. Orth Event Turn to page 2B Track and Field Turn to page 2B Trap Team Turn to page 2B

Finishing the 2012 seasonwith a 9-12 record, the first los-ing record in several years, and afirst-round playoff elimination, this year’s Panther baseball teamgives the feeling that won’t hap-pen again.

“I’m optimistic,” head coachDean Schwirtz said of this year’steam. “If we’re able to throwstrikes and pick it (intensity) up,we’ll be fine.”

Schwirtz will look to a crop ofseniors with experience to set thetone for this season.

Senior Ethan Maass returnsfor his final season and looks tosomehow improve on a stellarjunior performance from lastyear.

Maass earned WCC All Con-ference honors as an outfielderlast year (.400 OBP, 17 R), andwas the team’s leading pitcher(1.98 ERA, 13 BB/41 SO in 28.1IP).

Maass and a number of otherteammates played on the Legionstate championship team forPlato last summer.

“I don’t know how, but if heimproved from last year, I’m ex-cited to see what he’ll do,”Schwirtz said of his ace pitcher.“If he can do what he did lastyear for us, I’ll be happy.”

Unsure as to why there wassuch a big difference between theschool team’s record and the Le-gion one, Maass said that experi-ence should help out everyone, including the younger guys.

“Teddy Peterson was a bigpart of that championship lastyear,” Maass said. “But we trustevery one of those guys.”

Trust them you should. Fromgrades seven through 12, last

year’s varsity team was the onlyone with a losing record.

Couple the seasons that theunderclassmen teams producedand the experience the olderplayers gained in Legion ball, and this Panthers team looks tobe tough. “We have a lot of num-bers that can see varsity time thisyear,” senior Travis Rothsteinsaid. “If any of us have an offday, we have a lot of good ath-letes who can step up and fill thatrole.”

The main thing is that they area close, tight-knit group withteam aspirations in front of per-sonal ones.

“All of these guys have beenputting in work,” Maass said.

“We don’t care about personalstats and all that. We just want towin.”

“We’re a close bunch ofkids,” Rothstein said. “The mainthing is that we all like to win. We’re not here screwing around. We’re here to get a job done.”

The job that he’s referring to iswinning the conference and, hopefully, making an appearancein the state tournament.

“The goal is to win the confer-ence and make it to state,” Maasssaid.

“We want to win the statetitle,” Rothstein seconded.

Schwirtz, however, has hissights set on the little things.

“I look at it as being able to

get better day in and day out,” hesaid. “We do have the commongoal of making the state tourna-ment. Then, whatever happens, happens. I just want them to playfundementally sound baseball.”

In order to survive the WCC,the Panthers will have to be fun-dementally sound. The confer-ence is stacked with teams likeDelano, and the reigning statechamps, Holy Family.

The conference is split intotwo divisions, and GSL couldhave a favorable schedule duringthe regular season. That doesn’tmean the boys are practicingsoft, especially with Schwirtz atthe helm.

“Just like last season, the keys

are going to be timely hitting, scoring runs, bunting, stealingand throwing strikes,” he reiter-ated. “We have to pound thestrike zone. It’s hard to win with-out good pitching.”

Schwirtz said he’ll look forsenior Derek Bratsch to have abig year on the mound for thePanthers.

“With Bratsch on the mound,we’ll have a good opportunity towin. He didn’t get as much timelast year because we had AdamPrehn starting a lot of games forus. I really believe we mighthave the most depth on themound (in the conference), andthat we can compete with otherteams’ aces.” The real task willbe scoring runs, the coach said.

Another factor that Schwirtzsaid will determine how far thisteam goes is the ability foreveryone to accept their role onthe team.

“If the guys are able to accepttheir role — whether it’s a mini-mum or a maximum — thenwe’ll do well. And I think we’lldo fine with that,” Schwirtz said.“These guys are close as a team, which is important. They’re notworried about who gets the cred-it, as long as we’re successful inthe end.”

While the Panther baseballteam is optimistic that this yearwill end with more victories thanlast year, Schwirtz said there aremore important things than win-ning and losing.

“I just want them to get betterevery day and get after it,”Schwirtz said. “But one of mymain focuses that I tell the kids,is to just have some good mem-ories. Go out there and have fun, because that’s what it’s about.”

Shooters rotate through fivepositions located 16 yards fromthe front of the trap house towhere they stand. A shooter takesaim and yells “pull,” when theywant the target, or bird, to belaunched from the trap house. The bird flies at a set height of 10feet, and can vary to the left orright of the trap house by 17 de-grees.

Each person shoots from theirstation a total of five times beforemoving on to the next station.Only one person shoots at a time, alternating shooters after everyshot. Each participant goesthrough two rounds, or 50 shots.

The goal is to hit, or break, all25 targets each round.

According to the MSHSCTLwebsite, scoring is as follows:“Each team competes in theirown conference with teams ofsimilar team member size. Allparticipants contribute in the teamcompetition with the one roundthat they shoot. If an athleteshoots the top score (out of 50)

on the team, his/her score is usedas the “High Gun Score” thatcontributes 1/3 of the points forthe overall team score. “Top Per-formers” uses the top score aver-age from 50 percent of your team(minimum of 5) and contributesto one-third of the points. Teamaverage uses all scores for the re-maining one-third of total teamscores. A true team scoring sys-tem (similar to track and swim-ming) is used and a team com-petes against all teams withintheir conference each week. Thehighest total of points achievedby the team at the end of thecompetition is the winner.”

All participants have the optionto take part in the state tourna-ment in Alexandria, June 7-9.

According to the MSHSCTLwebsite, there have been no re-ported injuries since the league’sinception in 2001.

Living in Wyoming for a num-ber of years, Fegley said his viewof trap shooting’s involvement inschools may be a little differentthan most.

“Firearm safety was a part ofphysical education for us. We hadan indoor shooting range rightnext to the gymnastics gym, soI’ve got a bit of a different viewon this whole thing,” Fegley saidwith a smile. “But we’re open tothe public, and I encourageeveryone to come out and seewhat we’re all about.”

“At Tuesday’s meet, half ofour conference was there, andwe only lost by six points,”Jenna Haag said. “We’re satis-fied with second. That’s a bigimprovement from last year.”

“We’re making a comebackthis year,” Kelly Beneke sec-onded.

The second-place finish atBecker seems to have all partiescontent heading into the regularseason.

“I’m happy with them finish-ing second. They’re still kind ofbuilding this year,” DeCorseyadmitted. “The biggest thing

will be if we can stay healthy.”The Panthers will look to

junior Kelly Arnold for somepoints in the 55-meter and 200-meter dash. Arnold finishedfirst in both races at the Beckermeet, scoring 12 points.

“She’s a good sprinter. Sheruns very, very well,” DeCorseysaid. “She’s definitely thestandout.”

The Panther girls have somedepth at 200 meters, nabbingfive of the top six times atBecker. That speed was on dis-play in the 4x200-meter relay, finishing first with a time of

1:53.40, almost five secondsfaster than closest counterpart,Dassel-Cokato, with 1:58.30.

The track events seems tohave an even amount of seniorgirls to balance out the influx oftalented, but inexperienced, un-derclassmen. Distance eventslook to be dominated byyounger girls, except for the1600-meter run, which has beenjunior Tori Burr’s specialty.

“She’s been steady sinceeighth grade,” DeCorsey said.“She’s one of the leaders on thisteam as well.”

The Panthers also have some

options in the 800-meter runwith five girls under, or just at,three minutes.

“Last year we only had threegirls at that mark, so we’ve gotsome better depth with dis-tance,” DeCorsey said. “Whichis nice because we basicallyused to throw those pointsaway.”

But the field appears to beany girl’s game for the Pan-thers.

Senior Clarissa Ober had thebest outing in the field at Beck-er, placing third in shot put. Therest of the field events is beg-

ging for one of the younger, orless experienced, ladies to stepup and make a name for them-selves this year.

One thing is for sure, the girlsare looking to continue theirearly success throughout theseason, and set the standard forteams to come.

“We want to finish first in theconference this year,” Haagsaid. “We’re ready to shine.”

“This year, I think that ourteam is really focused and de-termined more than otheryears,” Ober seconded. “It’stime.”

Page 3: Trap team prepares for competitionglencoenews.com/sites/default/files/B-Section 4-10.pdf · event, but Greg should have a big year. Those two guys are the big leaders of the team.”
