Transradial Intervention CourseTranslating Data and Technique into a Successful Transradial Practice

This two-day course is for interventionalists who would like to start or expand their transradial interventional practice. The course combines high-impact didactic presentations, taped cases, state-of-the-art medical simulation, angiographic review and cadaver lab training, to provide an immersive educational experience.

THE TRANSRADIAL APPROACHThe transradial approach (TRA) offers significant advantages over the femoral approach by way of reductions in major bleeding, vascular complications and length of stay, as well as enhanced patient comfort and patient preference, all while maintaining procedural success.

Despite increasing use of the TR approach among interventional cardiologists in the United States, the US still lags behind Canada, Europe and much of Asia in TR adoption. Additionally, TRA is only beginning to emerge as a useful tool for peripheral vascular interventions.

Dramatic improvements in TR equipment and the availability of focused training opportunities now put this key skill set within the reach of every progressive interventional operator.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course is designed to provide a comprehensive exposure to transradial interventional skills ranging from case selection and preparation to procedural logistics and equipment selection as well as significant focus on technical skills, troubleshooting and management of complications. Through a robust, carefully designed curriculum of didactics, taped cases and hands-on training on cadaver models and radial simulators, participants will gain familiarity with most commonly encountered scenarios in transradial intervention. A certificate will be provided upon successful completion of this course.

MERIT MEDICALMerit Medical has made a substantial commitment to advancing the practice of transradial intervention with a broad portfolio of radial-specific products and accessories, its sponsorship of high quality training programs, and the ThinkRadial website, a resource for education, research, and informati on supporting the radial approach.

FACULTY PRESENTER PROFILES

Ferdiand Kiemeneij, MD, PhD

Dr. Ferdinand Kiemeneij, internationally recognized as the “father of transradial intervention,” performed the first transradial coronary angioplasty in 1992, followed by transradial stenting in the same year and stenting on an outpatient basis in 1994. After more than two decades, transradial coronary access was recognized as the preferred route for PCI by the European Society of Cardiology in 2015. In 2013, Dr. Kiemeneij was invited to build an intervention program at the Tergooi Hospital in The Netherlands, where he still holds a full position. Currently, he combines his practice with proctoring, lecturing and training minimally invasive TRI worldwide.

Dr. Kiemeneij is the Interventional Cardiology proctor for the European ThinkRadial program and is a special guest of honor for the US course in April.

Sandeep Nathan, MD, MSc, FACC, FSCAI

Dr. Sandeep Nathan is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the University of Chicago Medical Center where he also serves as the Co-Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. Dr. Nathan completed his fellowships in Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL and also served in the role of Chief Cardiology Fellow. Dr. Nathan held a joint faculty appointment at Rush University Medical Center and Cook County Hospital before transitioning to his current position at the University of Chicago. Dr. Nathan’s clinical interests include complex transradial PCI, percutaneous mechanical circulatory support, peripheral intervention and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Dr. Nathan utilizes the transradial approach in more than 75 percent of his coronary cases and describes his mindset as a “radial first” approach. He believes training other physicians in this technique “is a golden opportunity to improve patient comfort and safety, without compromising procedural efficacy.”

Darren Klass, MD, PhD, MRCS, FRCR, FRCPC

Dr. Klass is an interventional radiologist at Vancouver General and UBC Hospitals in Vancouver, Canada.

He obtained his medical degree from the University of Pretoria in South Africa and trained initially as a surgeon and then as a radiologist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in Norwich, England, before completing a fellowship in interventional radiology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Dr. Klass completed a PhD titled Bimodal Electric Tissue Ablation.

He has a strong interest in thermal ablation techniques and clinical outcomes thereof and is part of the interventional oncology team at VGH.

Dr. Klass performed the first transradial radioembolization and chemoembolization of the liver in Canada and is developing a robust hardware platform for radial access to the liver. His practice is 90% radial for liver interventions and fibroid embolization.

Dr. Klass is the head of MRI for Vancouver Acute and has specialist training in low dose MR angiography.

His current research interests include intraprocedural perfusion of liver tumors pre and post intervention and perfusional assessment of tumor response to ablation, transradial outcome, and efficacy measurements.
