Abstract

Building energy saving and safe evaluation for engineering

structures have obtained the world wide attention.Transparent Concrete is

a concrete based building material with light transmissive properties due

to embedded light optical elements usually optical bres. Light is

conducted numerical aperture Plastic Optical Fibres POF! or big diameter 

glass optical bre into concrete. The main purpose is to use sunlight as a

light source to reduce the power consumption through the stone from one

end to other. Therefore the bres have to go through the whole ob"ect.

Transparent concrete is also #nown as the translucent concrete and light 

transmitting concrete because of its properties. $t is used in ne

architecture as a facade material and for cladding of interior walls. Paper 

discusses integration of merits of concrete and optical bre% for developing transparent concrete by arranging the high of illumination and

to use the optical ber to sense the stress of structures.

The paper discusses a new #ind of building material% which can

integrate green energy saving with self sensing properties of functional

materials are important for construction industry. The evaluation of the

e&ectiveness of the smart transparent concrete% the light guiding based

on white light test% long term durability and chloride ion penetration test 

and self sensing property based on stress elasto optic e&ect test are

made. The e'periments results show that the smart transparent concrete

With the economic development and technology more and larger

scale civil engineering structures such as tall buildings, underground

buildings, landmark buildings are built around the world. The Optical

fbre sensors such as fbre Bragg Grating, Brillouin distributor sensor

and plastic optical fbre sensors have been widely used or the in situ

monitoring o maor proects !Ou and "hou, #$$%&'nshari, #$$(& Wu,

#$$)& *naudi+ue+ et al, #$$-& alymnios, #$$/& urashima, 011(&

uang, #$$)2. 3ew building materials are developed and used instructures, including sel diagnosis smart concrete, sel tuning smart

concrete, sel repairing concrete, sound proo concrete, thermal

insulation concrete and so on. These unctional materials only ocus on

the intelligence characteristics and cannot possess energy saving. *n

#$$0, the concept o transparent concrete is put orward by 4angarian

'rchitect 'ron 5oson+i, the frst concrete block is successully prepared

by mi6ing large amount o glass fber into concrete in #$$%, named as

5iTra7on. 8oel 9. and 9ergio O.G. developed a transparent concrete

material, which can allow :$; light through and only %$; o weight o common concrete. The *talian <avilion in 9hangai =6po #$0$ shows a

type o transparent concrete developed by mi6ing glass into concrete

in #$0$. While the transparent concrete is mainly ocused on

>transparent? and its application obect is art design.

Optical fbre acts as a base material in construction and sensing

feld which can arrange the sunlight transmit according to pre designed

road without light @ heat, light @ electrical or photo chemical process,

photo elastic eAect which can be used to study the stress distributiono structures. 7ombining the advantages o the concrete and optical

fber developing a novel unctional material has important value o

application or construction.

on in long term service. echanical property and anticorrosion property

o building material at adverse environments are two key acts or the

durability o in service structures, which directly impact the saety o structures.

By the study o the mechanical properties o smart transparent

concrete with diAerent <OC volume ratio under malDcondition, ro+en

process helps in fnding the compressive strength rate o the material.

Cor the smart transparent concrete the interacial bonding o the

<OCEs and concrete is a crucial actor in determining ultimate

impermeable properties. The chloride diAusion coeFcient method is

used to test the impermeability property o smart transparent concrete

which can rapidly evaluate the permeability o concrete by mi6ing the

electric energy through concrete. *n this paper the smart transparent

concretes with $;, %; and ); <OC volume ratio are chosen or the

test. The electric energy is recorded by the electric u6 detector 38WDH7<D)' made in 7hina and cylindrical concrete specimens with 0$$mm

diameter and /$mm height are abricated rom the pre abricated

smart transparent concretes by core drilling method. oreover, in

order to evaluate the interace bonding on the impermeability property,

each model o specimen has been divided two types. One is that the

border o <OC and concrete is covered by epo6y resin, the other is not

covered by epo6y resin.

 The manuacturing process o transparent concrete is almost

same as regular concrete. Only optical fbres are spread throughout the

aggregate and cement mi6. 9mall layers o the concrete are poured on

top o each other and inused with the fbers and are then connected.

 Thousands o strands o optical fbers are cast into concrete to transmit

light, either natural or artifcial. 5ight transmitting concrete is produced

by adding -; to /; optical fbers by volume into the concrete mi6ture.

 The concrete mi6ture is made rom the fne materials only it does not

contain coarse aggregate. Thickness o the optical fbers can be variedbetween #micrometre to #millimetre to suit the particular reuirements

o light transmission.

not looses the strength parameter when compared to regular

concrete. 'nd also it has vital property or the aesthetical point o 

view. *t can be used or the best architectural appearance o the

building. 'lso used where the light cannot reach withappro6imate intensity. This new kind o building material can

integrate the concept o green energy saving with the usage o

sel sensing properties o unctional materials. One can conclude

that transparent concrete is a positive step towards making o

Green house. *t also helps in improving 5=I score rating o a
