Transition UpdatesB13 Secondary Transition, Agency Connections, Accessing Community Mental Health Services, MRS Opportunities, Transition Questions October 2015
Effective October 1, 2015, Pre-Booking Jail Diversion services previously managed by Easter Seals Michigan were transitioned to Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority (OCCMHA). This Oakland County initiative offers persons diagnosed with a developmental disability, mental illness, or substance use disorder the opportunity to receive treatment within the community instead being charged with a criminal offense for a non-violet misdemeanor. Jail Diversion is accomplished through a comprehensive, county-wide partnership between law enforcement, the public mental health system, advocates, and other stakeholders. It also upholds Michigan Mental Health Code Sec 207 which states: “Each community mental health services program shall provide services designed to divert persons with serious mental illness, serious emotional disturbance, or developmental disabilities from possible jail incarceration when appropriate. These services shall be consistent with policy established by the department.” All Jail Diversion requests and inquires can be forwarded to OCCMHA Jail Diversion Coordinator, Dan Holloway, at [email protected] or 248.309.9455.

PERT - MCTI• 2-3 day assessment in the home school (using the tests we use
here) and then make recommendations for some students to come to MCTI Sunday to Friday for the situational assessments, independent living evaluation and additional testing.
• activities could count for PETS for MRS
• schools would feel better about releasing students during the year if only some of the students were referred to the one week session at MCTI.
• We would still probably run or summer sessions as well.
MRS Opportunity • Offering 60 hours of Vocational and Independent Living Training
• 3 x per week /2 hrs. per session for 10 weeks (this has some flexibility but it gives you an idea)
• This can be described as an intense Keystone (see Keystone course doc attached) • Starts – January or February 2016• Works best with a self-contained, basic, or consistent class so you are not pulling
students from general education instruction• Adult Transition 18-26• Consider students who may benefit /not need continued services through age 26
• Will need enough students for 6-10 MRS referrals• Services are sponsored by MRS/no additional Interagency Cash Transfer Agreement
(ICTA –cash match) needed. • We will develop a list of those interested on 10/27 – Follow up & final decision will be
determined by MRS. • Ideally would like a district in the south and a district in the north
WIOA – Work Force Investment Opportunity Act• VR version of IDEA • Reauthorized Summer 2014 /regulations • No school/students - Move from sheltered
workshops- deviated wage • If you are currently using an employment vendor
(New Horizons, Judson, JVS…)• Sheltered workshop/deviated wage can’t be
the only service • Must offer continuum including community
employment experiences
How will WIOA affect your program/services? • Will you need to
change how you offer your adult transition programs/services?
• Working on regulations – learn more @MTSA March 2016
• What additional information will you need?
Another Opportunity- Hough Counseling • Hough Counseling willing to host an ‘open house’
• Tami Hough, former BSBP Counselor • Tuesday, November 24, 2015
• 1:00 -2:30• 675 E. Big Beaver Troy MI • Services• Employment vendor for BSBP & MRS• Individual & group therapies• Evaluation • Career Exploration• Vocational Assessments

Employment Grants
The guidelines are as follows: Grants will be made in amounts ranging from $500 to $1,000.
We are looking for impactful and innovative initiatives that will promote employment outcomes for students.
The only exception to the $500 minimum will be requests for workshop and seminar entrance fees.
Grant moneys must be spent before March 31, 2016. Funding is expected to benefit students during the 2015-16 school year.
Receipts will be required to document all purchases. Receipts must be submitted by April 30, 2016 and be equal to or exceed the amount of the grant. http://autismsocietyoaklandcounty.org/page/2015-online-application-employment-skill-building-grant

Questions of the Month
1. Do you know of a place/agency that offers sex education for people with developmental disabilities? I know many of the districts have a trained person on staff for this but we currently don't. All we have is the small component of it in the Circles group. 2. Here is a crazy question but I have a teacher who was wondering if there was a company/agency out there that would let a student who completed drivers training but needs a car to earn the 50 hours required before doing segment II. It can be supervised or with the agency person in the car.
Questions of the Month
• On the transition page of the IEP, under Development of Employment• The student will participant in 3 WBL experiences in
the areas of retail, visual/media arts, and ______• The district provided more than 3 WBL experiences
but they were only able to provide 2 of the 3 areas specifically identified on the IEP. • Is the district responsible for providing the 3rd
specifically identified category of WBL?
