Continuing Professional Development
The importance of life long learning in medicine
Transition to Practice• Self-directed learning is important across the
continuum of medical education from undergraduate training through to retirement.
• Physicians in practice should be able to use their practice environment as a stimulus for learning and be able to develop, implement, and document the outcomes of their learning.
Continuing Professional Development
Maintenance of Proficiency (Mainpro) • The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
• Supports and promotes the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of family physicians
• Available to residents – can claim up to 30 Mainpro-M1 and 5 Mainpro-C credits
3 Key Functions:
1) Provide CPD participation guidelines and standards
2) Easily track and monitor CPD participation
3) Ensure high-quality, ethical CPD programming through a peer-review accreditation process
Mainpro Credit Categories:
• Mainpro-C: CFPC-accredited programs that include a demonstrated self-reflective component
• Mainpro-M1: structured learning programs, events or activities
• Mainpro-M2: self-directed or non–CFPC-accredited learning activities
Cycle and Credit Requirements:
• 25 credits per year (starting Jan 2013), and 250 credits per 5-year cycle

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program• The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
• Evidence-informed tool for lifelong learning that enhances knowledge, competencies and performance by having participants engage in activities under the MOC learning framework
MOC Framework:
• Section 1: Group learning - accredited group learning and unaccredited activities
• Section 2: Self-learning - planned learning, scanning, systems learning
• Section 3: Assessment - knowledge assessment and performance assessment
Cycle and Credit Requirements:
• 40 credits per year, and 400 credits over each 5- year cycle
