Transitionsby Bryan Goffe

Bryan GoffeGarage Asylum

Whether as routine as the change of interior finishes, necessary as adapting to marketplace rules, noticeable as career growth, or the evolution of organiza-tional leadership – we are all always working with transitions.

There are moments when change is necessary. When different would be better and even in this case where everyone can win. A transition from “how it is” to “how it could be” would be an improvement for all involved with the law(s) per-taining to electrical in-floor heating. Aside from clarity and consistency in the regional rules, a statewide legal revision would benefit all parties. The Flooring Association Northwest is looking into what it can do (hopefully along with some help from our friends at the Master Builders Association) to see if we can better inform those who decide and perhaps influence a law(s) that many of our members are governed by. A transition to better. If you’d like help let us know.

As our members grow with the Northwest marketplace and individually through their careers FAN will be there to participate in the transitions.

Regards,Bryan Goffe

Proposed Annual Membership Dues Increase

It’s been over 10 years since there’s been increase in membership dues and with the rising costs of events, the BOD feels it’s necessary to propose the following change to the annual membership dues. All members in good standing are requested to vote at the October 2nd dinner meeting to approve or disapprove the following proposal. Proxy votes are available please contact the FAN Office for more information.

- 2020 - $100 increase to the associate level of membership ($495) and regular and installer rates remain the same at $395/$75 - 2021 and beyond - $10/year annual increase on all membership categories

We hear it everyday . . . Downsizing, urban living, simplifying, Millennials choosing differ-ent lifestyles, the Tinyhome Is it just a trend that we don’t really have to worry about? If my clients need this what do manufacturers offer that will work? How can I meet their needs through design and specification?

A trend is something that comes and goes, this is something deeper that just like designing for Aging in Place and to protect our Environment, the Micro Size Me Movement is one our Industry and Designers need to sit up, take notice of, and get out in front of!

Ask Not What Your FAN Golf Tournament Can Do For You, But What You Can Do For Your Tournament

The answer is simple. Be active in FAN; give feedback, offer realistic ideas on how to improve. Join the Golf Commit-tee! Join the FAN Board! We want your participation in all forms. The Flooring Association NW, Board of Directors and all its Committees are ever changing and ever evolving. We volunteer our time for this Association and for the FAN Committees because we love our industry and we love golf or we love showcasing new products in our industry (FAN Market), or we love industry training and teaching (FAN Dinner Meetings) or are excited to involve and encourage the youth of our industry (Young Professionals Mixer) or we are just good at social media (FAN Marketing) or we love to socialize and network while showcasing some of our members facilities (FAN Happy Hour Series). There is a place and an opportunity for you to help make positive change and to contribute with FAN.

This will be my last year as Golf Committee Chairman for the Flooring Association NW as I move into my new role with FAN as the President of the Board of Directors. We have a couple of new faces that joined the Golf Committee late in the planning for the 2019 tournament but both will be integral in next years tournament and I want to welcome these two incredibly high quality people, Regan Miyamura (Greater Seattle Floors) and Kent Loos (United Tile). If you would like to join the Golf Committee, please reach out to Tish, myself or the next Committee Chairman, yet to be announced. As we continue to try to improve and evolve the Tournament, we have decided to start planning for next years event before this year even ends with the goal of giving our Regular Members, whom are the bulk of our spon-sorship, the opportunity to include the 2020 tournament in the corporate budgets which is always a challenge for them. This issue was a growing issue for the 2019 sponsors, and we heard your concerns! We do hear everyone’s com-ments and we greatly appreciate any and all feedback, positive or negative. We can’t evolve without your feedback.

I want to congratulate our tournament winners, Ken Peth(Men’s Low Gross), Andrea VanderLende (Women’s Low Gross), Tom Herrick (Senior) and Paul Cook / Bill Smith (Horse Race). Well done!

I really want to thank all of our volunteers (too many to list). We could not pull this off without your involvement and help.

I want to thank ALL of our sponsors immensely, with special thanks to Emser Tile for stepping up and being our Cham-pion Sponsor this year. Without our sponsor’s involvement and vital contributions, this tournament could not exist. I cannot express enough, our gratitude to our sponsors.

Thank you to all the players for continuing to want to play in this tournament and for spending the day having fun with your peers. This tournament continues to sell out earlier and earlier each year. Plan ahead and don’t wait to sign up as we had numerous perennial players who didn’t play this year because there were no spots left.

Thank you, Golf Committee, with special thanks to Tish and Chad Ballard for all they do for this event.

To everyone: Be active with FAN. Join the Board, join the Golf Committee, join any of our Committees! I’m looking forward to seeing you all next year!

Tip 1 - Buff Up Your Website- Speed Up Your Site. Slow loading web pages frustrate your users and can cost you visitors and business! Strive to have each web page

load in three seconds or less. Test your page speed us-ing these free tools: pingdom.com, webpagetest.org or gtmetrix.com. If these tools indicate that your site loads slowly here are some tips to increase its speed:

- Reduce Size of Your Images - Website image file size is a leading contributor to slow page speed. Compress your images before loading them to your site. Free tools like compressor.io will help reduce image size.- Use a Quality Host - A website hosting company can make or break the website experience. Rely on a quality host like siteground.com or wpengine.com (experts in Wordpress hosting) to host your site. These companies offer speed and expert technical support if you run into an issue with your site.

- Make Your Site User Friendly. Keep your website pages consistent using the same heading sizes, font choices, coloring and design ele-ments. Choose a simple navigation with page links no more than three from the home page of your site.

- Ensure your website is responsive and mobile friendly. In 2018, nearly 58% of website visits are now made using mobile devices like phones and tablets. In fact, Google started penalizing sites that are not optimized for mobile devices. It is imperative your site is mobile friend-ly. Here is a great tool to check if your site is responsive: http://mattkersley.com/responsive/

Tip 2 - Optimize Your Website Content- Write content based on buyer intent keywords An important part of Search Engine Op-timization (SEO) is to include content on your site that helps and engages poten-tial users. Build a content strategy based

on your industry’s highly searched keywords. Long tail keywords (those with three or more words,) will rank more quickly in Google.

- Update Your Site Often. You should strive to update your site at least monthly, but weekly updates are optimal. Search engines (Google in particular) put more emphasis on pages that are active and current. A Blog is a great way to keep your site current . Write articles that customers find helpful and engaging will help your site rank higher.

Tip 3 - Consider Pay Per ClickPay per Click (PPC) marketing using Google Adwords, Bing, or Facebook can provide a fast track to reaching potential clients. PPC marketing provides first

page exposure and immediate, consistent and targeted traffic to your site. A quality search campaign can be tar-geted to customers in your local area and you only pay when a user clicks on your ad. Unlike conventional ways of advertising, PPC advertising is highly trackable down to the keyword or ad campaign.

Tip 4 - Use Social Media and eMail MarketingMore than three billion people today use some social network. It's no wonder why businesses use social media to build their

brand and stay top of mind with their customers. Social media marketing is fast, inexpensive and effective. Take advantage of your social contacts to gather email ad-dresses and send monthly email newsletters to keep your customers engaged with your brand.

Tip 6 - Integrate Your Brand PresenceFinally, and most importantly, make sure your online, web and print materials are consistent and share the most im-portant parts of your brand. There’s so much information out there for your customers to consume. Make it easy to find and identify your company brand by sharing an integrated marketing message with your customers.
