Introductionby Oliver Camplin-Warner
Every day, organisations face increasing customer demands and changing market dynamics as digital disruption reshapes industries around the world.
Innovative companies are using technology faster than ever before to create compelling new business models, services and products in response to their customers’ demands. To compete and thrive, organisations are exploring various ways to become ‘digitally native’. Game-changing technologies and applications such as hybrid cloud and user-centric collaboration solutions, delivered over software-defined, intelligent networks, are advancing the way everyone works and interacts. These technologies improve agility and speed to market, and deliver exceptional experiences to customers and end users.
At Telstra, our enterprise, government and international wholesale business is focused on enabling you to make the most of technology to succeed in the digital era. With many workloads moving to cloud environments – public and private – the reliance on secure and flexible networks is more important than ever before. We aim to create and curate the best solutions to empower your business growth in new markets, empower you to lead digital disruption in your sector, and provide exceptional experiences to your customers.
We are energised by the opportunities to work with many customer organisations to bring unique digital experiences to life. We believe that by partnering closely with our customers as part of a small ecosystem, we can co-create the future of your business and set you up for lasting success.

Our customer focusOne of our key strategic pillars is to deliver brilliant customer experiences. We are focused on providing you with the best products and services on the best networks with sales, service and support that are simple, intuitive and increasingly digital.
But we realise there’s always room for improvement. That is why we are committed to ongoing improvements.
Gone are the days when customer interaction was the sole responsibility of those with ‘customer service’ in their title. Today, delivering an exceptional customer experience is the focus of every person in our business.
Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to and what we’re continuing to work on.
Striving for best-in-class customer service – providing you with responsive and consistent service
We recognise delivering services when we say we will, and restoring services quickly while providing regular updates during service disruptions, is critical to enabling your business.
We have continued to build additional service delivery capacity in over 20 countries outside Australia. This serves to provide a consistent end-to-end experience. Our priority is to ensure quality and efficient delivery of services across multiple geographies.
Delivering superior networks – investing in network expansion and resiliency
In 2017, we introduced the shortest and lowest latency path between Taipei and Hong Kong, as well as a new overland fibre route in Taiwan to bypass the natural disaster-prone Luzon Strait. We now offer eight high-capacity 100G routing options into South Korea, providing greater redundancy with connectivity to more subsea cables.
We also launched our “Always On” service guarantee, providing assured availability for high capacity services across the Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan triangle.
Expanding our products and solutions – delivering innovation and differentiation
Our product deployment includes the introduction of a Telstra consolidated IP offering – IP Transit - available globally. This offers a single contract, billing, assurance processes and performance reporting, irrespective of location.
The Telstra Global Media Network provides simple and efficient delivery of live, linear and file-based video content, by combining our global subsea cables, satellite stations, and broadcast operations into a single media contribution solution.
Collaborating with our joint venture in Indonesia, telkomtelstra, we are committed to exploring investment opportunities in the rapidly growing technology start-up sector in South East Asia, from e-commerce, e-health, the Internet of Things and fintech.
We’ve grown our Hybrid IT portfolio by launching Public Cloud services with Softlayer, AWS, Cloud Gateway and Cloud Management Platform. Telstra PBS (our China joint venture) has improved its IPVPN service by building four new PoPs in Kunshan, Shenyang, Jinan and Fuzhou for better resilience.
Faster quoting times
We know that timely access to important market-relevant price points is vital to your business. As such, we introduced the International Pricing System (IPS), a 24/7 online portal available for customers to access over 39 million market relevant pricing points, covering 14 of Telstra’s international products and services. IPS gives you full control to obtain product prices in real time via an intuitive interface – all from your desktop or tablet, in just a few clicks.
Leow Kim LeeIT, BIC
Our customers“Managing such a diverse network has its challenges, but we needed an IT environment which was not going to cause us delays. We are grateful for the time and commitment the Telstra team has given us. Telstra demonstrated a real understanding of our business challenges and was able to deliver a solution which was suitable for our own business needs. Nothing has felt like an off the shelf product, which has been brilliant.”

Connecting Commercehighlights that business leaders are relatively confident that their city environments can provide the support they need to meet their digital ambitions. There are clear indications, however, of areas where many cities are coming up short, including the supply of digital talent and sharing of digital data.
Connecting Capabilities provides an indication of overall digital
transformation progress in Asia. It looks at which countries in Asia have
the necessary building blocks in place to ensure business success in a
connected world, with a focus on digital infrastructure, human capital and
industry connectedness.
Connecting Companies finds that the growing trend for
digital partnerships is already having a measurable impact for the
organisations involved in them. One-half of the 1,044 executives surveyed
believe their digital partnerships have proven their value ‘beyond doubt and
expectations for the future are even grander.

Connected Future series
We are always looking to the future for new technology and trends that will shape our world. Here’s what you need to know according to our CTO Håkan Eriksson:
The Machines are Coming
• The network can play an important role in offloading the compute power from connected devices to the cloud.• All devices will be connected, from a power tool to a wind turbine, for industries to gather data of their usage
to generate insight about the product and its consumers.• Security is a main challenge, which in turn puts requirements on the network, end-to-end.
A New Reality
• VR company Meta has thrown out monitors on desks for all its 140 employees, and instead everyone wears Augmented Reality (AR) headsets to see as many virtual monitors as they need.
• In the next three years, a typical AR headset will shrink from helmet size to a smaller, more appealing google-style. These devices will have a high impact on the PC and mobile industries and start replacing those devices within 10 years.
Cyber Trust
• With 500,000 new threats released on the Internet daily, traditional anti-virus software doesn’t work anymore. Instead you need Machine Intelligence using math-based technology to predict and stop an attack, before something bad happens.
• Cyber risk management is not a problem to be fixed, it’s a condition to be managed.• The security industry is very fragmented and that requires a common platform for execution and a good Service
Organisation for Operation. Open Source can provide the former and organisations like Telstra the latter.

Millennials will become the most valuable demographic for banks globally by 2028, and will remain so for an estimated 18 years. In the United Kingdom, United States, China and Indonesia, Millennials’ average wallet size (i.e. the total balance value of deposits and lending held by millennials) has already surpassed all other demographics with Australia next to follow. It won’t be until 2046 that we see Generation Z challenge Millennials’ status as peak profit makers for financial firms.
Population growth and economic development has created a consumer group who, in both number and purchasing power, are unlike any other in history. Our report, Exponential Performance in a Millennial, Mobile, and Programmatic World, explores these concepts in much more detail.
Insights: Millennials – powering the growth of the new digitally-led financial institutions
Our research found that financial institutions have to be aware of the changing ways Millennials choose to engage with organisations, because Millennials are inherently mobile. Mobile penetration among the countries in our study is highest in Australia (96 per cent among Millennials) and lowest in the United States (74 per cent), yet the country most likely to engage on mobile is China – where 88 per cent of Millennials have a mobile-first engagement with their bank.
The future is Millennial and exponential
Financial organisations need to change their technology investment strategies, take advantage of innovation in programmable networks, and leverage insight and understanding of the millennial market. If they do, they will be the companies that reap the benefits of the millennial mobile-first market to achieve exponential growth.

The way we consume sports is being revolutionised. Sports fans now, more than ever, are demanding live, high-quality, content-rich coverage at any time, in any place. For Australia’s largest sports broadcaster, FOX SPORTS, this change in consumption has led to a rethink in its broadcasting model, and led them to select Telstra as their network partner of choice to help with this change.
In a world first on Australia’s expansive geographical scale, Telstra’s Distributed Production Network (DPN) deploys a remote production broadcast by connecting 29 sporting stadiums across the country to new remote production hubs.
So, what exactly does the new broadcasting model look like? Traditionally, outside broadcasts of live sporting events require a dedicated control unit housing production staff and technical equipment at each individual event.
Revolutionising Live Sports Broadcasting Trevor Boal, Head of Telstra Broadcast Services
In a move to centralise the production of live sports, Telstra’s DPN allows for ‘remote production’ of live sports. This new model utilises our high capacity, low latency, multi-tenant network of scale to send multiple raw camera feeds, audio and equipment control from multiple sporting stadiums.
The deployment of a remote production model across Australia’s vast and expansive geography is a world first, with multiple channels of uncompressed video and audio traversing our network from sporting venues up to 3,500 kilometres away from the Remote Production Hubs. Our DPN will play a pivotal role in satisfying audience demand for live sporting coverage.

We live in an ‘always on’ culture where we expect to be able to connect anywhere at any time – whether it’s watching Netflix, connecting with friends and family on Facebook or shopping online. The result of this is rising demand for data and better connectivity, particularly in Asia. Central to this is a vast network of subsea cables which carry more than 99 per cent of international data traffic and keep us all connected to the Internet.
While we expect non-stop connectivity, there are some areas within Asia that provide challenges particularly in the form of fishing activity, earthquakes and typhoons. Subsea cable damage can take weeks, or even months in extreme cases, to fix.
‘Always On’: world-first assured availability in Asia
To reduce the impacts of cable damage, we’ve introduced a new redundancy guarantee for our busiest subsea cable routes – Hong Kong to Singapore and Japan to Hong Kong.
Our ‘Always On’ service guarantee will use Telstra’s scale in Asia and market-leading subsea cable network to guarantee connectivity even in the event of a cable cut or damage due to a natural disaster. It means customers can be assured that all of their subscribed bandwidth – whether it’s 10GB or 1TB – can be supported on the same route in the event of a single or multiple outages on the primary path.
The scale and diversity of our subsea cable network in Asia puts us in a unique position to reroute traffic to another path with minimal downtime –
within a matter of hours initially and with automation we expect to bring this down to a few minutes in the future. This is because we have one primary path and two protection paths over different cable systems along the busy Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan triangle.
Our new ‘Always On’ service guarantee will mean our customers with high capacity needs can deal with one service provider, and not only save time and money, but also help to improve the experience they provide their end users.

The world of Chinese startups has been evolving and growing rapidly in recent years. To get a holistic view of the Chinese startup ecosystem, we spent time with Chris Pu, Partner, Head of greater China at Telstra Ventures and Ben Sand, Entrepreneur-in-residence at muru-D Sydney, to discuss technology trends in China, industries that make them excited and the most memorable advice from their mentors.
How would you rate the current startup environment in China?
Ben Sand: In my experience, mainly from spending time in Shenzhen, the startup environment in China is very exciting. People work extremely hard, and the ability to execute, especially on the hardware side is phenomenal. There is a truth behind the saying: “Whatever you can do elsewhere in 12 months, you can do it in three in Shenzhen.” Sometimes even just feeling some of that energy or having people around you moving at such fast pace can positively influence you as well.
Chris Pu: Very interesting and very diverse. There are clear differences between the three startup hubs in China – Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. I think Beijing is the most vivid one. There is plenty of good talent, opportunities and capital, and for any startup these are the most important ingredients. Also, in Beijing, you can feel that companies have the ambition to build nationwide or even globally around a strong and transformative idea. Companies in Shenzhen, due to their heavy focus on hardware and consumer electronics, seem to be a lot more practical in terms of running a business and eventually driving sales.
Chinese Startups: An evolving landscape of innovation and change
Is there enough support for the startup ecosystem locally?
Chris: China has a very supportive environment for the startup ecosystem today with a lot of support on a policy level from the Government. In 2015, during the 12th National People’s Congress meetings, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang urged local governments to implement policies encouraging “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” and to promote the growth of startup companies. Since then, the state has set aside more than RMB 2.1 trillion (US$320B) to invest in supporting emerging entrepreneurs in the technology sector. However, you can see that the Government understands that it’s not just about the funding;in the last few years, the State Council has introduced new measures to cut red tape and make it easier to register new companies.
Two more elements that are crucial for a healthy startup ecosystem are venture capital funding and access to talent. China is the second largest venture capital market in terms of aggregate deal value after North America. And Chinese universities are well-known for producing great engineering and technical talent that, very often, ends up joining local startups. Because of these elements the local startup ecosystem is flourishing today.
What are some of the challenges local companies face?
Ben: I think one of the challenges local companies face, especially if we talk about global ambition, is challenges around “cultural translations”. When the product is “simple” and doesn’t require any cultural translations, it is much easier to scale it to other markets. For instance, when you look at something like DJI drones, you get the controller, read the manual and you can pretty much fly the drone. But when you look at something like WeChat, you have to understand the culture in order to really get the interface and start using all the functionality. Sometimes there are also data-related challenges. If you work in healthcare or fintech, there are some restrictions on moving the data across borders, which make it much more difficult for companies to scale outside of China.
