PARISH COUNCIL **The Parish Council extends its thanks to the LPS for coordinating Holy Week needs, to the volunteers who read The Gospel in various languages during the Agape service, and to the Myrrhbearing youngsters for participating in the Epitaphios service. ** A limited number of spots are available on the courtyard memorial wall. Please contact a Parish Council member, if you are interested in buying a plaque in memory of a former member of our parish or reserving one for a current parishioner. LADIES PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY (LPS) **The LPS will meet in the Hellenic Center’s conference room following the coffee hour on May 3 and June 7; the LPS will not meet in July and August. *The LPS expresses its heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed towards Holy Week needs. Your monetary donations, as well as your time and talent, were deeply appreciated. COMMUNITY NEWS **Relatives  and  friends  met  in  Winchester,  VA,  on  April  25  for  the  dedication  of  the  Nicholas  Anninos  Practice  Room  in  Ruebush  Hall  at  Shenandoah  University.    Also  in  attendance  was  the  first  recipient  of  the  Nicholas  Anninos  Scholarship  for  Conservatory  Instrumental  Students.    May  Nick’s  memory  be  eternal.  

**Our  congratulations  to  Arianna  E.  Ballas,  daughter  of  John  and  Athena  Ballas,  for  being  chosen  for  the  new  Environmental  Studies  Academy  at  Western  Albemarle  High  School  beginning  Fall  2016.    She  is  one  of  twenty-­‐five  students  chosen  for  the  new  Academy.      Arianna’s  studies  will  include  a  project-­‐based  environmental  science  track  centering  on  field  work  and  an  applied  track  in  which  students  learn  by  addressing  current  environmental  issues.    The  curriculum  will  include  foundations  in  biology,  chemistry,  physics,  and  mathematics.    We  all  wish  Arianna  the  best  in  her  new  studies.

   **Best  wishes  and  good  luck  in  their  new  venture  are  extended  to  the  Boukourakis  Family  (Paul,  Anna,  Angela,  Mary).    Serving  breakfast  and  lunch  with  classical  Greek  and  diner  favorites,  The  Breakfast  House  restaurant  is  now  open  for  business  on  Fontaine  Avenue.    **Brandon  Caramanis,  grandson  of  Kerry  and  Kathie  Caramanis,  competed  with  the  Walton  Middle  School  Band  in  New  York  City  at  the  end  of  April.    Brandon’s  band  came  in  first  in  every  category,  received  three  superior  ratings,  and  was  declared  Grand  Champions.    Congratulations  to  Brandon  and  the  Walton  Middle  School  Band!        **Grace  Caramanis,  grand-­‐daughter  of  Kerry  and  Kathie  Caramanis,  came  in  ninth  in  a  field  if  twenty-­‐eight  contestants  in  the  Regional  Spelling  Bee  on  March  7.    Way  to  go,  Grace!

May - June 2015  COMMUNITY NEWS (Continued)  **Nia  Guinan,  daughter  of  Melanie  Carratt,  won  ribbons  at  Oakland  Heights  Horse  Show  on  “Tigger”.  

  **The  Regional  Oratorical  competition  held  in  Fredericksburg,  VA,  on  April  25  included  Yanni  Raymond,  son  of  Mark  and  Claire  Raymond.    Yanni,  who  was  one  of  twenty  participants,  did  extremely  well  in  representing  our  parish.    Thank  you,  Yanni.   **Yanni  Raymond,  son  of  Mark  and  Claire  Raymond,  and  Knox  Daniel  represented  Peabody  School  on  March  21  at  a  School  Scrabble  tournament  run  by  Stefan  Fatsis  at  Alice  Deal  Middle  School  in  Washing-­‐ton,  DC.    Yanni  and  Knox  came  in  second!    They  had  previously  won  another  tournament  in  the  Fall.    On  May  16-­‐17,  Yanni  and  Knox  will  compete  at  the  2015  North  American  School  Scrabble  Championship  (NASSC)  at  Hasbro’s  Worldwide  Headquarters  in  Pawtucket,  RI.    The  NASSC  is  an  annual  tournament  for  children  (two  players  per  team  from  grades  4-­‐8)  representing  schools  from  around  the  country.    Top  prize  is  $10,000.    Last  year,  Yanni’s  team  came  in  eleventh.    The  event  can  be  followed  live  at  https://www.schooolscrabble.  us.    Good  luck  to  Yanni  and  Knox!      

     

**A  fond  farewell  is  extended  to  George  Sperin  who  is  moving  to  Long  Island,  NY.    George  and  his  late  wife,  Nancy,  joined  our  parish  fourteen  years  ago  when  they  arrived  in  Virginia  from  North  Carolina.    George,  who  served  on  the  Parish  Council  and  was  an  active  Ahepan,  will  be  missed.    Although  George’s  last  Sunday  with  us  is  May  17,  we  hope  he  will  visit  Charlottesville  often.        **Angelo  Vangelopoulos,  Ivy  Inn  Chef  and  son  of  Tom  and  Judie  Vangelopoulos,  was  a  semi-­‐finalist  for  the  James  Beard  Best  Chef:  Mid-­‐Atlantic  Award.    **During  March  and  April,  several  of  our  parish  members  experienced  the  loss  of  loved  ones.    May  the  memory  of  Paul  Antonoplos,  Stuart  Berr’s  mother,  Nancy,  and  Konstantine  Khutsishvili’s  father  be  eternal. COMMUNITY THANK  YOU **Thank  you  to  George  and  Perry  Geros  for  preparing  and  serving  the  breakfast  following  the  Agape  service  and  for  donating  the  sausage  that  was  included  as  part  of  the  meal.    A  thank  you  is  also  extended  to  Kerry  and  Kathie  Caramanis  and  to  Maria  Matthews  for  their  assistance.      **Thank  you  to  Melanie  Carratt  for  coordinating  the  GreekFest  raffle.    Names  of  the  winners  will  be  posted  on  the  bulletin  board  in  the  Hellenic  Center.  **Thank  you  to  Deb  Triant  for  updating  and  maintaining  our  parish  website  (www.transfiguration.va.goarch.org).      **While  some  of  us  will  be  taking  time  off  during  the  summer,  a  special  thank  you  is  extended  to  those  who  continue  their  service  throughout  the  year;  namely,  Altar  Boys,  Choir  and  Parish  Council  members,  Mike  and  Mary  Ann  Bournos  for    publishing  the  weekly  church  bulletin,  and  Tom  Vangelopoulos  for  providing  Prosphoro  for  all  Divine  Liturgy  services.    WANTED We  would  like  to  include  pictures  (as  well  as  newsworthy  items)  of  parishioners  in  the  bi-­‐monthly  bulletin  and  church  website.    Please  email  digital  photos  to  [email protected].    Please  submit  narratives  to  either  [email protected]  or  [email protected].
