i s Congratulations, and welcome to Columbia University!

Tis guide provides practical in ormation on advising at Colum-bia, the Core Curriculum, the courses you will have to take, andthe resources that are available to help you. Tis particularsection contains in ormation speci cally or you as a trans er orCombined Plan student. You are expected to read either theColumbia College or the Columbia Engineering section o thisguide, as appropriate, or more detailed in ormation.

the bASicS Transfer students are expected to graduate in eight

semesters, including terms completed be ore enteringColumbia.

Extended time will not be granted to nish a particularmajor.

Some majors may not be available to transfer students.

A normal course load for Columbia students is four to six academic classes a semester.

Transfer students must complete a minimum of 60 creditsat Columbia.

You will be assigned an adviser who will ollow your academicprogress throughout your time at Columbia College (CC) orColumbia Engineering (CE). You are encouraged to talk withyour adviser about a variety o issues, including:

general academic questions, concerns, or di culties

progress toward and completion of academicrequirements

    future life plans

    registration questions

academic standing, academic warnings, and probation

    Degree Audit Report (DAR) interpretation

changes in academic program, in consultation withaculty advisers (i appropriate)

petitions for exceptions to academic policy

receiving transfer, AP/IB, or summer course credit

other opportunities, including premed and prelaw requirements, ellowships, graduate school, and otheracademic options.

e-mAil liStServ And blogTere are many ways to stay connected to CSA. Every week,CSA e-mailsTe CSA Weekly to all CC/CE undergraduates with

announcements regarding academic deadlines, in ormationsessions, campus events, career days, and ellowships. CSA alsopublishes theCSA Blog (http://studenta airs.columbia.edu/csa/blog), which is updated daily with the same in ormation.

trAnSfer credit evAluAtionSTe courses you have taken at outside institutions (or at Co-lumbia while not matriculated as a Columbia College or CEstudent) have been reviewed. For courses that are substantively similar to those taught at CC or CE, credit has been tentatively

awarded. Te rans er Credit Evaluation ( CE) or the Com-bined Plan rans er Evaluation that you received this springidenti es which credits rom your home institution have beenaccepted or trans er to your Columbia degree. Credit is only awarded or courses in which a C or better has been earned.

Some CEs may note that speci c course syllabi are needed orurther credit review. Please orward any additional paperwork directly to the Center or Student Advising. An adviser willcontact you in mid-August with a revised CE re ecting any updates in your standing.

Credit and course approvals are two separate issues. Credit getsyou closer to the 124 (CC) or 128 (CE) points that you need tocomplete your Columbia degree. Course approval means thatyou have satis ed a particular requirement. Te credit shown onyour CE is general degree credit, unrelated to any course ap-provals. Sometimes (but rarely) a course approval or a require-ment is given without any corresponding credit.

o receive the B.A. degree rom Columbia College or the B.S.degree rom CE, you must complete a minimum o 60 points o credit at Columbia. For CC students, no more than 64 pointsrom outside sources will be counted toward the degree, and nomore than 68 points or students at CE. Outside sources o creditinclude trans er credit rom another college and advanced stand-ing earned on the basis o Advanced Placement, InternationalBaccalaureate, and other standardized examinations. Credit is notgranted or college-level courses taken while in high school.

You have been assigned a class standing and an expectedgraduation date based on previously completed academic work. Your class standing may be changed upon receipt o an updatedtranscript. All students at CC and CE are expected to graduate
