Secondary Education (English, science, social studies, or math in grades 9-12)

5th-Year (undergraduate/graduate program)

Become certified to teach English, mathematics, science, or social studies in grades 9-12 through the Master of Teaching (MT) Degree program, also known as the 5th-year program in secondary education.

The program is designed for you to earn two degrees in five years of school. Once you have completed the program, you will have earned a Bachelor of Arts or Science and a Master of Teaching degree and be ready to become certified to teach your chosen subject. Many states, including South Carolina, have a higher pay scale for educators with a master’s degree.

You will complete your bachelors (undergraduate) degree at USC in the major related to your teaching area (English, mathematics, science, or social studies). While completing your undergraduate major, you will complete a 12-15 hour education core.

The education core you will take after transfer to an undergraduate degree at USC includes:

• EDFI 300 – Schools in Communities • EDPY 401 – Learners and the Diversity of Learning • EDSE 302 – Teachers and Teaching • EDSE 500 – Equity and Community Engagement

These courses include field experiences in high schools. During your senior year as an undergraduate student, you apply for graduate school to complete the one-year MT Degree. Admission requirements include a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75. During the one-year masters programs, you will complete additional education courses, including your internships/student teaching.

What should I take before transferring to USC?

While at a SC Technical College, take courses that will count toward a degree in your teaching subject area.

If you want to teach English, you will major in English at UofSC. If you want to teach mathematics, you will major in mathematics or statistics at UofSC. If you want to teach science, you will major in biology, chemistry, or physics at UofSC. If you want to teach social studies, you will major in history at USC.

To find degree requirements for an undergraduate degree in your content area, review the UofSC Undergraduate bulletin at bulletin.sc.edu. Find your appropriate major under “Programs A-Z”.
