Transcontinental Railroad
By: Stephanie Culp
Take me out to the Transcontinental
Railroad.
• A railroad built to link the East and the West.
• Trans: across
• Continental: land/country
Take me out to the track
• The Chinese were good workers.
• Some Chinese were even brought over from China.
Buy me some concerns and doubts
• Some people thought that building a transcontinental railroad would be impossible because they didn’t think that tracks could be laid through the steep Sierra Nevada mountains.
I don’t care when it gets done
1863-1869
• Work on the railroad began early in 1863.
• It was finally completed in 1869! Yeah!!
Because, its root, root, root for the Big Four
Collis P. Huntington
Leland Stanford
Charles Crocker
Mark Hopkins
If they don’t break through the barriers
it’s a shame• Some barriers were…
– The Sierra Nevada Mountains:
The workers had to carve paths, build bridges and blast tunnels in order to get through the mountains.
Its, one, two, three tracks your out to
California

If you build it they will come.
• The railroad connected California to the rest of the United States.
• Travel to and from California became faster and less expensive.
• Goods were less expensive because it was cheaper to get them to California.
• Trade increased in the port cities which helped California grow.
