Optimizing your training return-on-investmentThere is increasing evidence that investments made in employee development lead to as much as a 38 percent marginal return-on-investment (ROI), and that ongoing training maintains benefits and may lead to greater savings as a result of increased employee satisfaction and retention, improved processes, enhanced customer service, and innovation. Successful organizations do not reach and maintain excellence by chance; they strategize, plan, and support every aspect of their business model. The ability of these organizations to maintain excellence is based upon the weakest link. With changing technology, increased global connectivity, and demands for a knowledgeable, skilled, and flexible workforce, successful organizations have discovered the value of ongoing strategic employee training programs.

The key to achieving long-term success is maintaining skilled talent in alignment with organizational strategy and goals – a task that has become more and more challenging in an increasing global, technologically dependent world.

VALUE STREAM MAPPINGHave you ever looked over a letter, thought it was perfect, and then gave it to someone else who found some obvious mistakes? That’s what can happen when you get too close to a process—it’s difficult to see it with an objective eye. And there’s a lot of waste that can be eliminated. Statistics show that as much as 60 percent of operations in a manufacturing business do not add value to the customer. Value Stream Mapping helps to identify the current flow of material and information in processes for a family of products, highlighting the opportunities for improvement that will most significantly impact the overall production system. Implemented at the beginning of a lean improvement strategy, Value Stream Mapping has been shown to significantly increase the chance for lean success.

EXPRESSING YOURSELF: PRESENTING YOUR THOUGHTS AND CONCERNSIt’s natural for individuals at all levels to have thoughts about work procedures at their place of employment, as well as ideas for improvement. In the past, organizations have encouraged employees to wait until scheduled times—such as performance reviews or problem solving meetings—to express these concerns and ideas. However, today organizations no longer have the luxury of waiting to hear what people have to say. Competition has become so fierce that companies must constantly be alert for ways to improve.
