6.4B Line Check
Line Check(s) shall be completed annually (365 days) as part of the SASMAP or as directed by the Manager of Training and Checking. Line Checks will normally occur between the CTPP simulator Session A and the CTPP simulator Session B checks.
The line check is considered a particularly important factor in the development, maintenance and refinement of high operating standards, and provides valuable feedback to the curriculum, training methodology and company policy.
Line checks are a test of a crew member's ability to perform a complete line operation and an opportunity for an overall assessment of their ability to perform the duties required as specified in the Company and aircraft operations manuals.
Unless safety is being compromised, the Check Captain should not interrupt the Pilots management of the flight.
The route line check should generally include the following:
Flight planning and air navigation;
Pre-flight preparation;
Airways operating procedures;
Maneuvers associated with normal operations of an aircraft;
Assessment of human factors and non-technical skills;
Required items from the Line Check Focus Notice; and
Line Checks will consist of a minimum two (2) sectors.
The route chosen should provide an adequate representation of the scope of a flight crew member's normal operation.
The Check will also include the candidate completing both Pilot Flying (PF) and where possible Pilot Monitoring (PM) duties and conclude with a facilitated de-briefing.
The Check Captain must ensure that all operating crew members have been cleared for line operations before flight where the Check Captain is not operating as Pilot in Command i.e. occupying the jump seat.
NOTE
The Manager of Training and Checking may vary the requirement for the number of line checks, however the minimum frequency for line checks shall not be less than one in every 365 day period.

6.4C Check to Line
The Check to Line (CTL) is an assessment of a pilot's ability on first joining the company, or completing conversion to another aircraft, to safely and competently operate the company's aircraft in accordance with Company manuals and aircraft FCOM. This assessment is conducted following the Line Flying Under Supervision portion of the Induction program or command upgrade.
For Command CTL, the Check Captain must ensure that the captain under check is competent to operate with a line First Officer, before proceeding to the second stage of the assessment.
The CTL at the completion of the Line Training is to assess the candidate to a satisfactory standard to be released to line operations. The candidate must demonstrate:
Human factors and non-technical skills, including threat and error management
compliance with operating priority policy,
knowledge of airport operating criteria,
adequate knowledge of the aircraft,
flight planning, and fuel calculations
aircraft loading,
standard operating procedures, and
instrument approach (provided such a request with ATC does not interfere with ATC sequencing and unnecessary flight time or delay the aircraft).
Check Captains must be satisfied that Captains under check can appropriately lead and manage operations whilst supervising other crew members with wide ranging levels of experience, using appropriate non-technical skills.

6.8.1 Introduction
Line training is conducted for Captains and First Officers following the Boeing 737 Type Rating or company induction if type rated, to develop operational skills, consolidate standard operating procedures and route endorsements where necessary.
Flight crew operating as PIC must carry out a line training flight into a narrow runway that is a company destination prior to operations from and into narrow runways as PIC. Specific narrow runway line training is not required into or out of aerodromes that are only designated as Company alternate aerodromes.
The following forms, are to be used for line training, and are to be completed by Training/Check Captains in accordance with Training and Checking Manual 5.9.5.
RO.152 Training Log
RO.154 Achievement Record
RO.155 Line Training Comments Record
Line Training is segmented into four phases, with each phase taking approximately 15 sectors. At the completion of Line Training, a command candidate must have no less than 50 hours of aeronautical experience (ICUS or previous Command Time) on Type. The Achievement Record form (RO.154) must have each unit and element of competency completed to a minimum standard and signed by the Training / Checking Captain. A section on the last page of the RO.154 form has provisions for a signature for 'Recommendation for Check to Line' to be entered by the Training / Check Captain.
NOTE
The number of sectors required, and the applicability of phases may be varied by the Manager of Training and Checking or the Boeing 737 Flight Standards Manager when giving consideration to the experience on type of the candidate. Refer to Chapter 2.13.1.

R0.154 Achievement Record
R0.155 Line Training Comments Record
Line Training Forms
These forms are used by the Training / Check Captains conducting the training to record the candidate's progress and to act as a reference syllabus for the training to be covered. A code is used to indicate the achievement standard attained by the candidate in a particular item / element of competency.
The letters used to denote the standard in the achievement record have the following significance.
Achievement Standard / Codes
The Achievement Record (R0.154) contains a list of items to be covered during the course of the line training. All individual items per element are required to be covered
Command of flight In accordance with FCOM / PPM
Command potential (FO only) In accordance with FCOM / PPM
Pilot Monitoring In accordance with FCOM / PPM / NTS

and must contain a 'Standard' code / 'Training Captain' signature / 'Date', to indicate completion. Some items must be satisfactorily completed a minimum number of times before the appropriate 'standard' code can be entered. The candidate is also required to sign the Achievement Record. The candidate's signature certifying completion is only required at the completion of all the training specified.
To ensure the elements per unit are completed in a timely fashion and coincide with the final day of training (prior to Check to Line), each Training Captain is responsible for monitoring the candidate's progress, and notifying the Manager Training and Checking if it is evident that additional training will be required to complete certain elements. This notification should be made at the earliest opportunity.
The Line Training Comments Record (R0.155) is to be completed on a daily basis to provide additional detail of the candidate's progress. Constructive use of the 'comments' section is invaluable to the Training Captains that follow. Comments must be meaningful and highlight areas of weakness, or items requiring attention. Comments should provide useful information to the next trainer. Detailed comments target deficiencies and foster improved methods of instruction, benefiting both the candidate and Training Captain.
6.8.6 Flight Crew Records
Upon receipt of all documents Flight Crew Records must:
Insert candidate's training file into staff file records.
6.8.7 Satisfactory Training
Achievement Standard
The assessment of the standard achieved is inserted on the Achievement Record form (R0.154). The Achievement Record lists each of the elements per unit, that must be achieved, and an Achievement Standard Code that the Training Captain judges the level of competency achieved. The assessment is to be made objectively by observing specific and measurable actions by the pilot. These specific and measurable items are listed above in section 6.9.4. The object of including the Achievement Standard and the Standards Table is to indicate to students, Training and Check Captains, all the actions required to meet the required standard so that there is no doubt as to what constitutes an acceptable level of competency.
Technique and Judgement
Assessment should be based on the technique used by the candidate and not just the ability to perform the task within the specified numerical tolerances. Technique involves smooth and accurate control application in adjusting power, attitude, trim and balance in a timely and coordinated fashion whilst following correct procedures. Additionally, sound judgement and decision making should be displayed. It may be that on some occasions flight conditions (e.g. turbulence) are such that even though the pilot's technique is sound the aeroplane may deviate outside specified tolerances for

short periods. In such cases the assessment of technique should be the determining factor.
Airmanship
Simply defined, airmanship is the ability to fly safely. Essential aspects of airmanship must be demonstrated by the pilot, to achieve the required standard of competence in each element.
When all training elements are complete, and scoring has met the minimum standard or higher, a Check to Line recommendation is to be made by the Training Captain. The Training Captain conducting the last line training flight is to certify this recommendation on the bottom of R0.154.
For training to be considered satisfactory and for the Check to Line recommendation to me made there must be:
an “S” against every item, and
a Training Captains initials against every item.
6.8.8 Unsatisfactory Training
Failure to meet the required standard will result in a fail assessment.
Candidates who fail to meet the required standard are to be referred to the Manager Training and Checking who will undertake the following action:
assess degree of failure,
discuss with Check Captain and candidate,
recommend either:
– further training and re-assessment, or
