The Pivotal Education App All your Pivotal Curriculum resources in the palm of your hand! The App is available on all Apple and Android devices. Simply search ‘Pivotal Education’ in your App store.

Step 1: Reflect Congratulations, you’re now a Pivotal Curriculum Instructor! You will receive a training evaluation one day post-training which will allow you to provide honest and anonymous feedback on the course. This is very useful to us so we can continually improve our services. You will also receive your digital badge via email! These are great for showcasing your professional development and can be shared on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. There’s more for you to collect as you roll out the curriculum. The three main things I have taken away from the course are:

1. _______________________________________________________________________________

2. _______________________________________________________________________________

3. _______________________________________________________________________________

Step 2: Where are we now? Now that you are back in your setting and before you begin training your staff, it’s a good idea to ascertain where your organisation is now in regards to behaviour management. This can help you focus on goals for the project and give you a benchmark to compare against in the future. You can measure attitudes towards behaviour through your staff and student surveys. You could also arrange a meeting with the SLT or run focus groups with your staff and students.

Staff and Student Behaviour Management Surveys

We advise running these as soon as you can after attending level 1 training. This is so the results represent staff and student attitudes and perceptions towards behaviour management prior to the curriculum being embedded. This means they provide a ‘baseline’ of data, which can be compared against each subsequent survey to help you assess the changes as the units are rolled out. You should have received the URLs from Pivotal Education a few days post-training. If you haven’t, please email [email protected]

Phone Call

We know that embarking on this journey may feel daunting to begin with. Therefore, we offer phone calls to all our instructors with either the office team or your mentor. Is there anything you would like to discuss with our in-house staff members? Do you have any pressing questions? Some ideas: behaviour within your setting; data collection; delivering training. We will prompt you via email to book these phone calls with us. Arranged date and time of Phone call: _______________________________ Key points from the Phone call:

Step 3: What do we want to change? Piece together everything you have learned on the course, the results from your staff and student surveys, your phone call with Pivotal Education and any other discussions or meetings you have had with staff members. Identify some key areas you believed would be worthwhile to focus on. Take these ideas into a meeting with your SLT and decide on the key areas of focus. The SLT should be involved in the implementation of the curriculum, they can help get all staff members on board and working towards the same goals. Remember - there are no set rules on what you should consider when assessing behaviour and identifying areas for change. Some settings measure detentions, internal exclusions and the number of times a senior member of staff is called to a classroom for support. Other settings measure lessons start times or behaviour around the site. The most important thing at this stage is that the goals are relevant to YOUR setting and that all adults are consistent in their approach to the change. Identifying your focus

What are you going to change?

What metrics will you measure the

Value

What impact will these changes have for everyone within your setting’s environment?

Risks Is there anything that may hold you back from making these changes? How will you tackle them? E.g. A possible risk is the SLT not being aware of the benefits the Pivotal Curriculum could have. This could be resolved by holding monthly meetings with the SLT to track progress.

Risk Resolution

Step 4: Who is going to be involved?

The success of the Pivotal Curriculum within your organisation relies on how invested all stakeholders are in the project. Consider everybody involved in behaviour management within your setting. Possible stakeholders include the SLT, parents, classroom teachers, lunchtime supervisors and staff, governors and you! How are they going to be involved in the project? Is there anything that could prevent them successfully implementing the Pivotal Curriculum? E.g. Parents – Some parents may believe that behaviour management within the school is the sole responsibility of the teachers - Send a letter home introducing the Pivotal Curriculum and upcoming changes in regards to behaviour management within the school. Emphasise shared responsibility.

Who Things that could affect their

involvement Ideas on how to get them involved in

the Pivotal Curriculum

Step 5: Training plan By now you have goals and focuses for the upcoming project, you have a baseline of data from your staff and student surveys, you are clear on who is going to be involved and any possible risks. Now it’s time to schedule your training sessions. Although there are 7 units in total of the Pivotal Curriculum (5 for level 1 and then an extra 1 for level 2 and level 3 each) we don’t expect you to be able to run all of these for all staff within the first year. In fact, the first 3 units cover in depth training to embed and sustain an effective culture within your organization and should be delivered chronologically. Units 4 to 7 provide you with a more focused view at specific areas you might want to address. So it might be that you decide that certain units (4 – 7) have a priority over others eg. Mental Health (Unit 6) over Safety (Unit 5) because all your staff are already trained in safeguarding.

Training Sessions

Remember – these do not have to be full day sessions. They can be Twilight sessions or they can be split into bite-sized chunks. The units can be delivered to all staff in one go, or small groups of staff members can be trained gradually. Remember, deliver Units 1 to 3 in chronological order and then you can chose how you would like to best deliver units 4 to 7

Step 7: Monitoring and Reporting

We advise that all Pivotal Curriculum instructors re-run their staff and student surveys 6 months and 12 months into their first year as a Pivotal Curriculum instructor and then every 12 months during years 2 and 3. Why? So that the impact the Pivotal Curriculum is having within the school can be monitored. Don’t worry – we will send you gentle reminders when it’s time to re-run these. It’s good practice to keep the SLT up to date with the key figures and comments from the survey so they can see the great progress you are making!

As well as the surveys, how else are you tracking whether there have been improvements? How do you collect behavioural data within your organisation?

6 month run of Staff and Student surveys

We would suggest you run the staff and student surveys every 6 months so you can effectively monitor the progress and impact you are achieving.

Survey Reports

You will automatically receive a report of the responses you have collected. If you would like these sooner, please contact [email protected]

Take some time to reflect on the key findings from your staff and student surveys. Do these differ from the first

time you conducted these surveys?

Progress Snapshot

Once you have re-run your staff and student surveys half way through the year, Pivotal Education can create a progress snapshot for you to showcase any improvements so far. The booker of your training will also receive a copy of this. Why not put this up in the staff room for everyone to see before the final push?

During the first year of the Pivotal Curriculum, you will have now compared the results of the first and second runs of your staff and student surveys and noted any improvements. You have picked out your favorite comments from your training session feedback surveys. You have looked at internal behaviour data. Now it’s time to email [email protected] with:

Statistics you would like to include from your survey results

Key behavioural data outside of the surveys e.g. detentions, exclusions

Testimonials from your training sessions

Anything else that shows the impact the Pivotal Curriculum is having within your setting

Step 8: Measuring your impact After 12 months of running the Pivotal curriculum it is important you measure the impact the Pivotal Curriculum has had within your setting throughout the previous year. At this stage in your journey, we would advise you to run your surveys again. Once this has been completed, we can create your Impact Assessment Report (coming up in Step 9!). It will be worth running the staff and student surveys every 6 months to be able to track the impact you are having

Reflection

Take some time to reflect on the key findings from your staff and student surveys. This time, look back at Step 3

of this book where you set out the key areas you chose to focus on. Do the results of these surveys show that an

impact has been made in these areas?

Key findings from Staff Survey:

Key findings from Student Survey:

Step 9: Showcase your achievements so far You’ve been training and measuring your impact all year, it’s time to showcase all your great work and congratulate everybody that has been involved! Your Impact Assessment Report consolidates all the data you have been collecting throughout the year and summarises it all into a succinct and colourful infographic. See Appendix 1 for an example of how yours could look.

Impact Assessment Report

To create your Impact Assessment Report, Pivotal Education will need the following information sent to [email protected]:

Open your survey reports – which key pieces of data would you like to emphasise?

Internal behaviour data - this should not just be on exclusion and attendance but should look at lesson

removals, specific type of behaviour incident, time out of learning etc.

Quotes or testimonials from staff – these could be from your surveys, training evaluations, or ask a

member of staff for their input

Quotes or testimonials from students

Staff Involvement

Show your appreciation to staff members that have assisted you in successfully embedding the Pivotal Curriculum

within your organisation. Emphasise the impact the program has had throughout the year in a staff meeting or

even assembly.

Pivotal Awards

A Pivotal plaque is a great way to showcase your setting’s dedication to Behaviour Management. Place this somewhere easily accessible for all to see.

Plaque criteria:

You will need to have embraced some of the Pivotal Pillars for Behaviour:

1. Calm, Consistent Adults 2. First attention for best conduct 3. Relentless Routines 4. Scripted Intervention 5. Restorative Approaches

You will have begun to make significant changes in the culture and ethos towards behaviour management and have a clear plan or vision for how improved consistency amongst all adults working in the organisation will be achieved. You will be able to provide evidence of the positive impact the curriculum is having on not only the learners but the adults also. To see the full criteria, as well as how you can progress to Bronze, Silver, Gold levels please visit: www.pivotaleducation.com/instructor-home

Step 10: Continuing Improvement The Pivotal Curriculum is designed to be run over a number of years to fully embed the practice. Schools and colleges who work well to deliver and embed the units of the curriculum find they are noticing the greatest impact and sustainable change. You will be sent a feedback survey so you can reflect on the level you are completing of the Pivotal Curriculum. We would really appreciate it if you could complete this, it will really help us improve the Curriculum for future cohorts. Please bring this Change Tool with you to your Level 2 and Level 3 course.
