To me, sport is the ‘hidden social worker’ in thecommunity. It’s also a great education and motivator.

Sports Traider is a youth-focused charityoffering young people, the kit and supportthey need to discover and fulfil theirsporting ambition and potential, whatevertheir background, ability or disability.

Sports Traider has established the firstchain of charity retail shops in the UK thatspecialise in sports kit and equipment. Theaim is to make clothing and sportequipment affordable to all, and at thesame time generate a sustainable source offunding to help disadvantaged youngpeople participate in sport.

We channel all the money we raise backinto grass-roots sport within thecommunity area from which it wasdonated. We encourage kids to try newsports and help talented sportingyoungsters excel. For example, byorganising community sport coachingsessions, access to sporting facilities, helping with club fees or transportation, getting talented but disadvantagedathletes to training and events. We firmlybelieve that community sport is anessential part of society and should beavailable for all, and never an inaccessibleluxury.

Not all kids have soccer mums and dads. Some families don’t have the time, themoney or sometimes – sadly – thecommitment to support their children totake part in sport. Take a teenager we knowin Bedford. Let’s call him Joe. His motherdied a few years ago, and his father can’tcope.

He’s a talented athlete, selected to train atnational level, but he often turned up totraining with ripped clothes and brokenequipment – if he turned up at all. For Joeto make training and attend fixtures on aregular basis, he needed support as well asmoney, and kids like Joe just can’t manageit without assistance.

That’s where we came in. Sports Traiderhelped Joe and hundreds of kids like him toenjoy sport, get the kit they needed andreceive the support to excel; young peoplelike the ones in your community. Webelieve this will create a virtuous circletransforming community sport: thechildren who get opportunities andcoaching now are likely to become thecoaches and enthusiasts of the future. Forus, sporting competition should be abouttalent, not about access to opportunity. That’s why our goal is about creating alevel playing field for all.

‘Lance’s background in the sports brandingindustry means that he has first-handexperience of the wastage that sportscompanies dispose of every year.

This culminated in him establishingBritain’s first sports charity shop, the firstopened in Bedford, closely followed byothers in deprived areas of the country.

Lance’s tireless pursuit of funding andpublicity for his charity has given him theopportunity and privilege of working withand meeting many influential andgenerous people in the world of commerce, sport and entertainment. Without the helpand support of these folk the charity wouldnot be as successful as it is today. But it isthe generous support of community groupsand the general public that gives thecharity its purpose and meaning. For this,Lance is truly grateful.’

Lance has spent untold hours of his personal time to ensure the SportsTraider brand has been taken to many towns up & down the country. Hehas lectured to businesses, schools, colleges, and WI groups to explain thebenefits of recycling unwanted sports equipment. Whenever I called himwith any problem he had the answer and went the extra mile to provide itfor me. Many people I have dealt with in the past just want to set thewheels in motion, tick their box, and walk away. Lance was differentinsofar as he stayed with us for three years, and I know if I called him uptoday he would help me again.

So far hundreds of children have benefitedvia our sporting outcomes, with freesummer coaching, alternative curriculum, structured after school coaching, and NEET(16-24 year olds not in educationemployment or training) initiatives.

The shops have become social hubs andthey are a focal point for engagingex-offenders back into the local community

as well as creating many volunteeropportunities for disabled anddisadvantaged people.

The support structure that surrounds eachshop has helped improve skills, secure jobsfor long term unemployed, and improvedmental and physical health and wellbeingin volunteers.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE INYOUR COMMUNITY

Sports Traider Charity provides a series ofvolunteering opportunities for people in thecommunity, which we firmly believebenefits the volunteers as much as thepeople they work to support. Volunteers, managed by part time, paid team leaders, give their time working in our outlets assales staff; they work in warehousing, transport and distribution; withfundraising, governance and finance, marketing and publicity; and with endusers e.g. coaching in a number of differentsports. All of the opportunities we providehelp people at different points in their lives.Volunteering helps improve skills, confidence and self-esteem, reducesloneliness and isolation, improves mentaland physical health and wellbeing.Friendships are forged, with many of ourvolunteers realising new opportunities to

move on to education, employment and/ortraining.

Where a retail outlet is trading successfullythe profits are pumped back into the localcommunity. The store acts as a catalyst insupport of local sports clubs and thevoluntary sector; a place where we can helpbuild community capacity e.g. throughyouth diversionary schemes reducingcrime and antisocial behaviour; offeringalternatives to the gang culture; helpingsingle parents increase participation levels;providing opportunity for NEET youngpeople; offering disabled people greaterchances to participate by providingspecialist equipment. The more funds wecan secure to cover costs, the greaterassistance we can give to those in need.
