Father Joseph Costa, O.C.R.D.

(Continued on next page)

2

Father Joseph Costa was born October 18, 1822, in Pettinengo, Province of Biella, about thirty miles northeast of Turin, Italy. His father’s name was Antonio Costa, and his mother’s, Angela Maria Facio. His father was engaged in land-industries, and was also employed in running a tailoring establishment. There were four brothers in the family, of whom Joseph was the youngest and the only one in the ministry. The others followed other professions. The family records go as far back as six hundred years from the present time. Some of the members along the line were priests. Father Costa received the first rudiments of letters and music in his native town. Subsequently, he entered a college called “Bachette,” and began his studies of Latin under Rev. Professor W. Scaglia. Later on, he pursued his studies in classics in the city of Biella, and after an interval of two years of rest, he began his course of philosophy in the College Melerio Rosmini in the city of Domodossoia under Professor Parma, continuing for two years. Having passed his examination in philosophy and being a member of the Order of Charity, he applied himself, under able professors, to the study of Divinity in the Rosminan Institute at Stresa on the borders of Lago Maggiore. In 1851, as a member of the order, he was sent by the General, the Rev. Antonio Rosmini, to the English Missions belonging to the same order. In this, his new country, he reviewed his theology under Professor Caccia and prepared for the reception of Holy Orders. On February 18, 1853, he was examined and ordained Priest in the Church of Oscott College, by the Rt. Rev. Bernard Ullathorne, Bishop of Birmingham. As a priest, he labored for eleven years in Great Britain, either doing parish work or preaching at missions or teaching in college. In 1864, at the request of Dr. Yunker, Bishop of Alton, Illinois, he was sent by the General of his order to work in that bishop’s diocese. In the United States, he primarily worked in various parts of Illinois—Springfield, Jacksonville, El Paso, Lincoln—and finally, in 1877, he was sent to Galesburg by Dr. John L. Spalding, first Bishop of Peoria, for the social purpose of establishing Parochial Schools. From that date forward, his labors were devoted to the wants and improvements in Galesburg for the Catholic population. Father Costa worked earnestly and faithfully for the up-building of the church to which he belonged. In the Spring of 1878, the erection of St. Joseph’s Academy was commenced, and in the Autumn of 1879, it was opened for use, with about ten teachers and four hundred pupils. Stevens and Parry, of Galesburg, were the builders.

On June 5, 1879 Father Costa expressed to Father General his desire to have a relic of Father Founder, ‘something used by him, anything at all’. ‘I have seen wonderful things’ from the use of relics of people “in the odour of sanctity” even though not yet canonized (for example Madame Barat, foundress of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart)1. Father Costa would receive great news of the gift from Father Lanzoni for the City of

Galesburg. This would be the entire body of a little martyr, Saint Crescens, taken from the Roman catacombs. The relic would arrive in America at the beginning of September 1887, ‘seals intact’, and would be exposed for the veneration of the faithful in the Church of Corpus Christi, where, from that time, the City had been placed under his protection and still is.

The cost of the building, including heating apparatus and excluding furniture was $16,858.13. The convent contiguous to the Academy was erected partly by Jacob Westfall, of Peoria. Failing to complete the contract, the building was finished under the direction of Father Costa. The work was commenced in 1880 and finished in 1881 at a cost of $11,388.52. The ground upon which Corpus Christi Church stands cost $4,885. The contract of the building was given to Matthias Schnell, of Rock Island. It cost, including heater, seats, bell, etc., $38,611.43. Corpus Christi dwelling cost $5,500, including heating apparatus. St. Mary’s Primary, on the corner of Fourth and Seminary streets, cost $2,500, without the furniture. The lot on which Corpus Christi Lyceum stands was purchased for five thousand dollars. The building and furniture cost about $42,000. It was commenced in 1891 and furnished in 1894. This edifice is private property of the Order of Charity in this country. At the end of 1894 the ‘Corpus Christi Lyceum’ was finished and all was ready (including central heating and electricity) for the opening of the new school. But the beginning of teaching would be postponed for a year for various reasons, not least economic ones. When they finally began with 25 pupils this was the list of the teaching staff:

President: Father Ernest HawleyAdministrator and Teacher of Religion: Father Joseph CostaTeacher of History and Music: Father Giuseppe TonelloTeacher of Mathematics and Mechanics: Father Ernest HawleyTeacher of English and Natural Sciences: Brother John Phelan, an Irishman 25 years old, who arrived at the end of July to complete the staff (and who would become a priest only in 1908).

n Fr. Costa was one of eight children.

n His siblings: Gasparo, Giovan Battista, Pietro, Giuseppe, Cattarina, Maria, Marianna, Cristina.

n In 1878 Father Costa finally had an assistant, his nephew, Don Luigi Selva, the son of his sister Maria, who Propaganda Fidei had sent to the Bishop and whom the Bishop had passed on to his uncle as his assistant. He would be with him till 1887. Later he would move on to take over the parish of St Patrick until 1893, and then would be transferred elsewhere.

In 1908, Father Costa would erect the great hospital of St Mary, calling on the Franciscan Sisters, whom he had known in his brief service to the Mission at Bloomington, to manage it. He bought in the north of the city a large piece of land for a cemetery, and he formed a society to look after it. He got clubs and charitable associations running for the solving of specific problems (the Society of Abstainers, the Knights of St Columbus, the Catholic Order of Foresters). Father Costa relinquished the office of parish priest of Corpus Christi on October 12, 1912, but continued to contribute his pastoral experience until he died, “full of good works”, on February 2, 1917. He was 93 years and nearly 4 months old, having spent 71 of these in religion and 53 years in America. He did not leave a cent of debt. He obtained from his people everything he required, he was respected and loved for his moral stature and his gentlemanly character. He was austere with himself, but compassionate towards the poor whom he always dealt with as a father. He was American with the Americans, whom he guided in the faith, but also in the love of their country. On July 7, 1927 he was granted United States Citizenship by a solemn academic act. He was buried in the Cemetery of Galesburg as he desired. He lies now in the midst of the graves of many brethren who came after him to work in the vineyard of the Lord which he had strenuously tilled.

On the evening of 2 October, between eight and nine o’clock, a disagreeable person

came to the house under the pretext of settling the accounts for a plot in the cemetery;

but in fact he came to kill me. Seeing that he was trying to pick a quarrel I opened

the door so that he might leave peacefully. But he seized me by the neck and struck me with an

iron with such force as to leave me for dead, and took to his heels. My nephew, who was in the

adjacent room, came out immediately, but he was too late to lay hold on the assassin. The doctor

diagnosed a serious wound, discovering a cranial fracture of some length. I began to move to say

Mass, but the result was that my brain would not function and I could scarcely walk. Deo gratias!

As far as my mental state was concerned, it goes without saying that I was resigned to the will of

God, and that, as far as I could, I prepared myself for the next life…’

The story of Father Costa was on display in the Diocese of Peoria Office, Spring 2015.

From Rachel Welch, Costa Catholic School, Class of 2006

A lot has happened since I left Costa, but my background has served me well. After graduating from GHS, I earned a B.A. in chemistry from Lawrence University in Wisconsin. I continued to play my clarinet with the Lawrence University Symphonic Band all 4 years and played my sax with the pep band for basketball games. Fast forward to the present, where I am just finishing my first year of graduate school at the University of California at Davis. I am working towards a PhD in chemistry, and my research is on solar-catalyzed water-splitting for hydrogen fuel cells. I will be finished with classes after this term, and my focus for the next 3-4 years will be on my duties as a teaching assistant and a researcher. This past winter I discovered a local community band that plays not only for summer band concerts but throughout the year. I have been playing with them since January, and just recently I joined a jazz band component of the ensemble. My work may likely take me around and across the country a few more times as I attend conferences and pick up a post-doctoral position, but ultimately I aim to settle down in a college town teaching chemistry at a university where I can help steer undergraduates like myself toward successful scientific careers. Cheers,Rachel

At the beginning of the 2014-15 school year, came an assignment that I had

never had before. It would be my assigned responsibility every morning

and every afternoon to be part of the drop-off and pick-up procedures

(AKA Door Duty) for preschool — 1st grade students. (Other students use

other entrances.) It may not seem like much of an assignment, but what it

proved to teach me was incredible! In May on the last day of my ‘door duty’,

I reflected on my many lessons.

At the start of the year students were literally wrapped around a leg

of a parent holding on for support but by the end of the year they were

skipping inside without even looking back. What a contrast. In just a few

months, a child learns that their parents aren’t the only people that will

provide support in their lives. Daily, students passed by me and in that brief

encounter they were able to share all kinds of ideas. Notable sayings, “My

baby sister was born this morning”, “Sometimes...my mom and dad say bad

words...”, “Can you help me?”

As I was reminded of lessons learned over the year, I was also reminded

of their importance. Lessons like: Sometimes when you run, you fall and get

hurt. And, winter in Illinois is cold and windy and in fifteen minutes you can

almost turn into an ice cube. The moral to the “door-duty experience”: All

families have their own story, and it makes them unique. The innocence of

a child is close to God. Everyday is precious, and even the smallest of things

will help us grow. Hugs and smiles are great ways to start and end the day.

And, at Costa, we really do make the difference in the life of a child.
