will have a very good friend at the Diocese as I begin my new position as Assistant Superintendent. IHS is in very capable hands with new President Mary Maloney. I will miss working with Principal Joe Carmen, the faculty & staff, Chairman of the Board Tony Rizzo, all members of the SAB and of course the students, but I am confident that Mary and Joe along with the ongoing support of the entire IHS community will do an outstanding job carrying on the Mission and taking Immaculate to the next level. I look forward to hearing about the students and the schools continued success! As you read and enjoy photos of how we successfully lived the Mission of IHS, I hope you like the new look of Traditions! The future of IHS is very bright. This year we raised nearly a million dollars. We have the largest incoming class in a decade. Our faculty, administration and students are strong and poised for continued success. It is truly a great day to be a Mustang!

Three days a week, three hours a day for three months...

that was the agreement when I accepted the position of Interim President of Immaculate

Anyone who knows Immaculate wouldn’t have to ask why I ended up staying, because they would know that once you get to know the Immaculate community, you quickly feel a part of this very special family and it is difficult to leave. As the saying goes “Once a Mustang, Always a Mustang”. There is something unique and special about the IHS community, the students, faculty & staff, board members, parents, alumni, volunteers, friends and donors… all of the people who all love and support this very special place called Immaculate High School. It’s people such as yourself who make it so much more than a high school. It is a community where students are supported, encouraged and develop their God given talents and gifts so they can reach their full potential. We have so many reasons to be proud. Our test scores are the highest in the Diocese, our teams win state championships every year, the Fine Arts program is awarded top honors at the Halo and Connecticut Music awards but when all those trophies and medals are collecting dust in a cabinet, what truly matters are the ways all of our lives have been blessed and enriched by being a part of the Immaculate Family. Immaculate will always have a special place in my heart and IHS

dear Immaculate communIty,

antHony rIzzoIHS Advisory Board Chairman

The Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano. He has already made a tremendous impact on the students at Immaculate. We are in the process of transforming the Library into a “Learning Commons” that will help with the 21st Century plan of educating our students. Also, we are in the process of completing the design of the front façade of the building, working with our budgets and our scheduled phasing for it. In the near future, we look forward to starting this project to make everybody aware from the outside what we already know is on the inside. Immaculate High School has a strong alumni base. Through the years, the alumni commitment and strength have grown to the point that they have truly proven to be the fabric of Immaculate High School. In closing, I would like to thank you for all the support that you have given and continue to give to Immaculate High School. I look forward to working closely with our new President and once again, would like to wish Kathleen Casey all the best in her new position. Please remember...What we do at Immaculate High School is all about the kids...Once a Mustang, always a Mustang!

Sincerely,

This is my second year as Chairman of the Advisory Board and as I write this letter, I realize it is a bittersweet time at Immaculate. There are

so many exciting things happening here but at the same time, we are saying goodbye to our President and dear friend, Kathleen Casey. As most of you know, Kathleen will be leaving her post after six years to accept the Assistant Superintendent position at the Diocese of Bridgeport. We cannot thank her enough for her time, energy, attention to detail and her assis- tance in helping to restore the pride at Immaculate High School. We wish her well in her new endeavor! There are many things to look forward to and I am confident that Kathleen’s successor is up to the challenge of her new position. With that being said, I am happy to welcome Mary Maloney as the new President of Immaculate High School. Mary comes to us from St. Rose School in Newtown, CT where she was a teacher for four years and a principal for ten years. She brings her own level of energy and expertise to her new position and will certainly do Immaculate proud as she leads us through the 21st Century. I am proud there are many accomplishments that continue to take place at Immaculate. Regarding spiritual life, there is nothing more important for our children than developing and nurturing their spiritual lives. We believe at Immaculate that we are truly demonstrating this through the efforts of our spiritual leader and daily activities for our students. We have also welcomed a new Bishop to the Diocese of Bridgeport,

There is nothing more important for our children than developing and nurturing their spiritual lives.“

dear frIends,

It has been a privilege and honor to be invited to join the Immaculate High School community. As a newly inducted “freshman” Mustang, I look forward

to becoming actively involved with pursuing the strong initiatives begun by President Kathleen Casey and partnering with Principal Joe Carmen to provide the highest quality education to incite every student to exceed beyond their own expectations. It is obvious that IHS is a special place achieving an essential mission. It is leading and succeeding. The dedicated teachers and staff, the challenging student opportunities, the community service outreach programs, the faith formation programs, the talented athletes, artists, and scholars are some of the many attributes that contribute to the framework of the finest college preparatory school in the Danbury area. We are approaching our 50th Anniversary as a school. The rich traditions, student achievements, alumni accomplishments, the years of support of local business, friends, alumni and parents as well as the continuing ongoing enhancements in technology and programs, will be celebrated. As a result of increased enrollment, international student programs, enhanced sports and fine arts programs, capital improvements are being considered next year. I thank you for your support and future commitments to making our student dreams become a reality.

With sincere appreciation,

The dedicated teachers and staff , the challenging student opportunities, the community service outreach programs, the faith formation programs, the talented athletes, artists, and scholars are some of the many attributes that contribute to the framework of the finest college preparatory school in the

Danbury area.

provIdIng a 21st century educatIontHe Immaculate way

by Joe carmenprIncIpal of Immaculate HIgH scHool

In our constantly changing world, we are faced with changes on an almost daily basis. Some are great, some are minute yet all of them

require a shift in the current paradigm of how we view the world. One of our greatest challenges in education is preparing today’s Immaculate students for careers that have yet to be created. Department of Labor statistics show that 5 of the top 10 in demand jobs were not created a decade ago. Colleges and employers are increasingly looking for individuals with the 21st century skills of collaboration, communication, and resiliency in addition to having a strong, well-rounded educational foundation. We must prepare our students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, to accept and embrace change as a fabric of their life, and view it as an opportunity for great things to happen. This is what we strive to provide to our students – not just many superficial bits of knowledge and information, but a deep understanding and appreciation of what is most important. We constantly work to develop the well-rounded student as adept in a Math class as

they are leading a group of younger students on a retreat. For this reason, courses in the Sciences, Math, Humanities and Arts have been added. Emphasis has been placed in the classroom on reflection, exploration, conversation and not just mere memorization of facts. Teachers have been encouraged to continue the deepening of their own professional knowledge not only in their subject areas, but to discover new ways of communicating that knowledge and created enthusiastic lifelong learners. As we look to the future we are taking daily steps to strengthen our Catholic identity. We will continue to build a curriculum that will educate and develop young minds who will make a difference in their communities many years into the future... and we will enhance the quality of our care and support for each Immaculate student. I thank you for the many ways in which you have supported Immaculate and for your many gifts, gifts that enable us to provide education in “the Immaculate Way.”

City Councilman Tom Saadi, an IHS alum (class of 1988), was promoted on July 12th to the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Reserve

Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Saadi, who serves as the Democratic Minority Leader on the Danbury City Council and as a Connecticut Assistant Attorney General, received his Officer’s Commission as a First Lieutenant in Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 2005 and was promoted to Captain in 2007. He currently serves with the 4th Legal Operations Detachment based at Fort Totten, NY and is assigned to a specialized legal assistance team in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate at

West Point, NY. Prior to assignment at West Point, Saadi served in several leadership positions with the 4th Legal Operations Detachment and conducted pre-deployment training sessions and presenting lectures

to hundreds of military personnel throughout the United States regarding Middle Eastern cultures and

religions. Saadi, who is of Lebanese and Italian descent, lived in the Middle East for several years and traveled extensively throughout the region prior to joining the Army Reserves. Tom gives back to his alma mater by serving on the Immaculate School Advisory Board’s Development Committee, volunteering at Career Day and attending many alumni events. Reflecting on his years at Immaculate Saadi stated “I did not realize at the time, but Immaculate not only provided me with an education but helped instill in me a strong sense of self-worth, social consciousness and gave me a group of friends who are like family to me to this day. Along with my family, it is that which IHS taught and gave that has made me the person I am today. I am honored to have been promoted to Major and look forward to continuing to serve my country with my fellow brothers and sisters in arms.”

A few months into my freshman year, the high school that I was attending announced that they

would be closing. Immaculate was close to maximum enrollment, but Mr. Gerwein made room for me. Thank goodness he did! When I think of my experience at Immaculate, I think of the opportunities that were a direct result of my years here. My experience participating in chorus and the spring musicals at Immaculate led me to seek out the music program at the University of Scranton where I received my undergraduate degree in Biology. It was there that I was chosen to represent the school at the Pennsylvania All State Intercollegiate Chorus, and to travel with the University Jazz Band to play inside The White House. While I was a student at Immaculate, I received a tremendous education, particularly in the sciences, from such outstanding teachers as Mr. David Couch and Mr. Kevin Dunleavy. The study skills and knowledge base acquired at Immaculate made for a smooth transition to college level work. Much of my first semester was review. When it came time to choose a high school for my daughter Kim, there was absolutely no question. Immaculate High School was the only choice. Kim’s experience at Immaculate has been extremely positive in every regard: academically, socially and spiritually. I am extremely proud of who she has become and would give Immaculate High School the highest recommendation.”socially and spiritually. I am extremely proud of who she

I hadn’t planned on coming to Immaculate, because my twin brother had decided that he was going to

Danbury High School and we wanted to stick together. Immaculate went out of their way to try to make an IHS education possible for me and my brother, and for everyone who works hard and applies themselves. My brother Daniel and I are very thankful that Immaculate did that for us, and grateful for all of the donors who contribute to scholarships and financial aid. The academics at Immaculate were challenging, and the teachers were so engaging that I ended up enjoying subject material that I never dreamed I would like. They really knew how to grab my attention and pique my interest. The word “family” comes to mind when thinking about my experience in athletics at Immaculate. I still keep in touch with my fellow football teammates, and being the manager of the 2012 state championship basketball team is a memory I will never forget! I have now been given the opportunity to help coach football at my alma mater starting this fall, and I enjoy being a counselor at Mustang Basketball Camp. There are many opportunities for alumni to come back to Immaculate and continue to be a part of what is happening today. I am so glad that I made the decision to attend Immaculate and am grateful to have had the opportunity!

My brother, sister, father and mother all passed away between 1990 and 2010. It wasn’t until my mother passed away that the full impact of my

whole family being gone really hit me. I thought about how their time here on earth would be remembered. What difference did their lives make? I decided to contribute to the Immaculate High School Alumni Scholarship Fund on behalf of my parents,

in my sister’s memory. Lee Cervera ‘84, was a great athlete. She could block any shot in field hockey, sink any basket in basketball and was awesome out on the softball field. I felt that there were some deserving students that would benefit from an opportunity to attend Immaculate, and I know in some way the money given in Lee’s memory helped to make that happen. ”that there were some deserving students that would benefit
