*Call to Worship

Rev. Pat Hammond

(based on Psalm 130)

Out of the depths I cry to you. Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?

But with you there is forgiveness, that we might serve you with reverence.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in God’s word I put my hope.

Israel, put your hope in the Lord and in God’s unfailing love.

Out of the depths I cry to you.

Lord, hear my voice.

*Opening Hymn #694 “Great God of Every Blessing” AURELIA

*Prayer of Confession O God of compassion, if you kept a record of our sins, who could stand?

We come before you with our brokenness and our wounds for all to

see. We bring our anger, our bitterness, our unwholesome talk, and our

deceitfulness. We try to do good, but sometimes fail. We choose to do

evil, and sometimes succeed. Keep your promise to forgive us when we

confess to you completely. Without you, we have no hope.

SERVING TODAY

ADULT EDUCATION

Today and March 19 - Creating the World through Tenderness and Holiness with Dr. Richard Swanson, Professor, Religion, Augustana University We only create the world when the world falls apart. That's the only time we have. The world does fall apart--in every family, on every continent, in every century. Sometimes the world is blown to bits, not just by alien forces or strange new threats, but by weather, diseases and geo-political conflicts. Then we emerge bleary-eyed and wonder what to do next. While we wonder, we tell stories. Defiant stories. Tender stories. Stories that dare to be hopeful. The violence continues, of course. The world falls apart again, of course. Yet, somehow the stories go on. And the world lives. We will explore two Creation Stories that made it into the Bible: Genesis 1 and Genesis 2. As part of our shared exploration, we will consider excerpts from the play “When the World Was Wild and Waste,” performed at Augustana in the fall of 2016.

Mar 26 April 2, 9 - A Study of Psalms: Confession, Suffering and Praise with Rev. Nathan Esser, Senior Pastor at FPC.

Presbyterian Women Offer Adams Scholarship

The Adams Scholarship at FPC originated in 1966 to honor Dr. and Mrs. Clarence Adams. Dr. Adams was senior pastor at First Presbyterian from 1939 -1966. Presbyterian Women created the scholarship in 1966 and have continued to support it through an annual fundraising event. Memorials, bequests, and individual contributions are also welcomed as an ongoing opportunity to support our future Christian leaders.

PW supports this scholarship to encourage men and women to prepare for roles in Chris-tian service (ministry, mission work, church music, Christian education, etc.). Initial consideration is given to those from our church, and thereafter to outside applicants.

Scholarship forms are available in our church office or on our church website: http://fpcsiouxfalls.org/reswomen.html. Completed applications are due May 1, 2017. If you have any questions, please contact Jackie Hove ([email protected]). —Adams Scholarship Committee - Jackie Hove, Julia Lufkins, and Becky Hillestad

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH VISION STATEMENT

First Presbyterian Church shares a vision to be present in the Sioux Falls area as the visible face of Christ. In this vision, the

words of our mission statement take on clear direction and added dimension. We connect, serve, and grow with God and others

within our congregation so that we may in turn connect, serve, and grow with God and others beyond ourselves, knowing that

even as we strive to bear the face of Christ in our relationships with our neighbors, we will find the face of Christ in the very

neighbors whom we serve.

As we equip ourselves to engage with people beyond our congregation, our church family will:

† experience unconditional love;

† celebrate God’s grace;

† grow in God's Word;

† mature in faith;

† cultivate spiritual gifts;

† affirm each other’s successes;

† support each other in difficult times; and

† experience the transforming power of the Christian faith.

To enable us to accomplish our shared mission, all of our members are called to engage individually and corporately in the

ministry of our church as they:

† participate regularly in worship services;

† pray for the church and for God's world;

† give faithful and regular financial support to First Presbyterian Church;

† participate in ministries inside First Presbyterian Church that encourage sustained connection and growth; and

† serve regularly in ministries outside our church family.
