Overview TheTraditionalGamesChampionshipswereestablishedtoincreaseparticipationandawarenessofNorthernandDeneGamesataterritoriallevel.TheChampionshipsbuildontheprogramsthattheAboriginalSportCircleoftheNorthwestTerritories(ASCNWT)hasbeenrunninginschoolsandcommunitiesacrosstheNorth.TheobjectivesoftheNWTTraditionalGamesChampionshipsareto:
1. IncreasethenumberofNWTresidentsparticipatingintraditionalgames.2. Supportathleteswithaninterestintraditionalgamesandwhowishto
pursuethesegamesatahigherlevel.3. InvolveallNWTcommunitiesintraditionalgamesevents.4. Developandmaintaintraditionalaboriginalcultureaswellassocial
componentsofthetraditionalgames.5. ShowcasethetalentsofNWTresidentsintraditionalactivities.
TheTraditionalGamesChampionshipscurrentlyinclude8Eventsthatcanbebrokendowninto4NorthernGamesand4DeneGamesEvents.Thefollowingdocumentwilloutlinetheprocedures,eligibility,rules,andregulationsregardingparticipationintheTraditionalGamesChampionships.
Teams & Age Categories AllSchoolsAcrosstheNWTwillbeinvitedtosendparticipantstotheTGCasfollows:a) EachSchoolwillincludefourmaleandfourfemaleplusamaleandfemale
coaches/chaperonesregardlessofcommunitysize.Chaperonesmustbe21yearsofageorolder.
b) Participantsmustbebetweentheagesof10and12yearsasofDecember31st2019.
c) Schoolsareencouragedtoselectalternates(oneboyandonegirl)fortheirteam.Incaseofasituationwhereanathletecannotparticipate,thealternatewillbeused.AlternatestravelwillnotbepaidforbyASCNWT.Ifthecommunitychoosestobringextraathletes,theymustcoverthecost.
d) Schoolcoaches/chaperoneswillberesponsibleforthedirectsupervisionoftheirparticipants.Coaches/Chaperonesmustoccupythesameaccommodationastheathletes.
e) Schoolteamsmustparticipateequallyinallsportsofferedatthehostsite.

f) Eachschoolwilldeterminewhichparticipantswillrepresenttheirschool.Athletesmaychoosenottoparticipateincertaineventsduetotheirownindigenousculturallaws(ie:womenplayingHandgames)
g) IntheeventthattheschoolchoosesnottosendateamtoTGC,thecommunityisencouragedtosendateam.
h) Iftheschool/communitydoesnothaveenoughathletestomakeateam,theycanpairupwithanothercommunitytocompletetheirteam.
Host Community/School The2019TGCwillbeheldinYellowknifeatWilliamMacDonaldMiddleSchoola) TheTGChostschoolwillprovideallmeals(breakfast,lunch,anddinner.Please
notethisdoesNOTincludeSaturdaydinnerandSundaybreakfast)forallathletes,coaches/chaperones,andofficials.
b) Athletesandcoaches/chaperonesaccommodationswillbeinclassroomswithinthehostschool.Pleasenoteyourschoolmaybesharingaclassroomwithotherschools.
c) Allparticipantsarerequiredtobringtheirownsleepingrequirements(i.e.pillow,sleepingbag,foamy,etc.)
d) Showerswillbeavailableatthehostschoolatalltimes,orattheCityofYellowknifeFieldhouseeachmorning(timestobeprovided).RideseachmorningwillbeavailabletothosewantingtoshowerattheFieldhouse.Shuttleswillstopat7:55ameachmorningtoavoidlatearrivalsforcompetition.Pleaseplanaccordingly.
e) Roomsmustbekeptcleanandtidy.Regularroomcheckswillbeconducted.Excessivedamagewillbebilledtotheschoolatfault.

Discipline Disciplinesituationswillbehandledasfollows:a) AnysituationwhereanathletehasbrokentheTGCCodeofConductmustbe
broughtforwardtoarepresentativeofTheAboriginalSportCircleoftheNorthwestTerritories.
b) AdisciplinarycommitteewillthenbebroughttogetherofASCNWTemployeestodiscusstheincident.
c) Therepresentativebringingforwardtheincidentmaynotsitonthedisciplinarycommittee.
d) ASCNWTstaffwillberesponsiblefordealingwithanyconsequencesthataredealt.

Wrist Hang History TheWristHangisanInuitgameofresistancetopain.TheInuiteldersintroducedresistancetopaingamestoteachyounghunterstodealwithcoldweatherconditions.IntheseextremeArcticconditions,freezingyourface,ears,handsandfeetwerecommonwhilehuntingonthelandorontheocean.
General Rules WristHangwillbemeasuredintotaldistanceinmetersthatanathleteisableholdontoawoodendowelusingtheonehandgripbeforetheirlowerbodytouchestheground,ortheylosetheirgrip/form.

Officialswilldemonstrateandreviewtheproperformandexplaintherulestothegrouppriortocommencingthecompetition.Oncethecompetitionbegins,itisuptotheathletesandcoachestoremembertherulesandexpectationsforthisevent.OneHandGripBothMaleandFemaleathleteswillbeexpectedtodemonstratetheproperformandetiquetteassociatedwiththeonehandgripfortheWristHang.
a. Athletessitstraightup,cross-leggedontheground.b. AthletesmustidentifytotheOfficialswhichhandwillbetheirgriphand.c. Athleteswillthengripthedowel,attheinstructionsoftheofficials,and
placetheirnon-grippinghandaroundthewristoftheirgrippinghand.d. Onthesignalfromtheofficials,theathletewillbeliftedwiththedowel
andcarriedasfarastheycanmaintainproperform.Officialswillmeasurefromthestartinglinetowheretheathlete:
- firstmakescontactwiththeground(nofeetdragging);or,- losesproperformintheupperbody(chinrestingondowel,armsrelax,head
beginstofallbeneaththeheightofthedowel)

Arm Pull History TheArmPullisanInuitgameofstrengthandendurance.Huntersneededtohavestrongupperbodystrengthforcarryingtheanimalstheyhadharvested.Animalslikethesealandcariboucouldweighupto100lbs!Theyalsoneededthestrengthtopullsealsoutofthesealholeandpullawhaleontheedgeoftheicefloworontothebeach.Harvestingcaribouinthefallmeantcarryingthemeatcarcassforlongdistancesbacktotheircamps.
General Rules SetupInpairs,athletesfaceeachothersittingonthefloor.Shortsleevesmustbewornandallwatches,bandsandotherobjectsmustberemoved.
a. Fortherightarmpull,theleftlegisstraightandtherightlegisbentovertheopponent’sstraightenedleg.
b. Competitorslockrightarmsatthebentelbow,withthelefthandholdingtheopponent’srightankle.Positionsarereversedfortheleftarmpull.
c. Acompetitormaynotgrabtheothercompetitor’sarmtogettheirarminplace.

d. Competitor’sshouldersareparallelandsquaretoeachother.e. Theleftarmsetupisthereverseoftheabove.
CompetitionAthletespullwiththeirrightarmsfirst.
a. Onsignalfromtheofficial,competitorspullslowlyandsteadilyattheelbowwhilebracingtheoppositehandontheopponent’sankle.
b. Contactbetweenthekneeandelbowisnotallowed.c. Thepullingmotionmustbeinsidetheelbows,notinanoutward
direction.d. Theobjectiveistopulltheopponentaslongasyoucanwithoutbreaking
yourhold.Thecompetitionconsistsofthebestofthree(3)“pulls”..Thesecond“pull”iswiththeotherarmandthethird“pull”,ifnecessary,shallbedeterminedbyaflipofacoin.Thewinnerofthefirstgamewillcallheadsortailsforthetie-breakcoinflip.
Competition Format AttheTraditionalGamesChampionships,participantswillcompeteinarandomizedbracketsystemagainstothermembersintheirgroup.Thebracketsystemusedwillbeadoubleeliminationformat.Oncethetop4athletesfromeachgroupareidentified,theywillberandomlyplacedintoaTOP8singleeliminationbrackettoidentifytheoverallwinneroftheevent.

One Foot High Kick History TheOne-FootHighKickisanInuitgameofagilitythatdevelopsanindividual’sstrength,quicknessandbodycontrol.Huntershadtobequiet,fast,andagiletohavesuccessfulhuntstoprovidefortheirfamilies.Forexample,sneakinguponanimalsrequiredthehunterstobequickontheirfeetmakingaslittlenoiseaspossible.TheseNorthernGameswerealsoplayedbyalltodevelopskillstodealwiththedifferenttypesoflandconditionstheInuitpeoplehadtoendureontheirtravels.TheOne-FootHighKickisoneofthemostexcitingNorthernGamesevents.Duringcompetition,participantswouldchallengeeachothertoseewhocouldlandthequietestwhilelandingontheirkickingfoottoshowcasetheirtechnicalskills.
General Rules Thecompetitormaystartwithawalk,runningorstandingapproach.Onthetake-offbothfeetmustbenomorethanshoulderwidthapart.Thetargetmustbeclearlystruckbyonefoot.Thelandingmustbeonthesamefootwithwhichthetargetwaskicked.Thecompetitormustmaintainbalanceandcontrolonthelanding.Thismaybeshownbyhopping3timesorholdingyourbalancefor3ormoreseconds.

- Eachcompetitorhasthree(3)attemptsateachheight.- Acompetitorischargedwithoneattemptwhen:

- TheHeadOfficialshallruleonanydisputedattempts.- Atthecompletionofattemptsateachheight:
o Thetargetshallberaised4inches(10cm)forallgroups.o Whenthereare4competitors(oratthediscretionoftheHeadOfficial)
leftineachgroup,group1and2willcombinetodecidetheoverallwinner.Theheightshallberaised2inches(5cm)untilawinnerhasbeendeclared.

Hand Games History Handgameswereplayedmostlyforpleasureandcelebrationwhenfamiliescametogetheronthetrailormetatannualmeetingsites.Handgameswereoftenplayedattheconclusionofsuccessfulhuntsfollowingthesharingofthekillandfeasting.Aftertheworkwasdone,itwastimetoplay.Othertimes,Handgameswereplayedasawaytowinresources,suchascampingsupplies,dogteams,andevenwives.Todayitistypicallyplayedforamoneyprize.ThevarioushandsignalsinHandgamesareverycomplexandeachofthesesignalshavemorevariations,dependingontheregionyouareplayingin,requiringparticipantstopaycarefulattentiontodetail.Handgamesisagameofreadingandunderstandingbodylanguage,knowinghowwellyoucanreadyouropponents.Backinatimewheremedicinepowerwasstrong,peoplehadtohaveastrongmindtoprotectthemselves,buttoalsothrowofftheconcentrationoftheiropponents.Dancingandmockingtheopposingteamwhileplayingisabigpartofthegametoday.Anotherwaytogivestrengthistohaveyourdrummerssurroundyouwhenyouaretheonlyplayerleftfromyourteam.Onesinglepersoncanbringtheirentireteambackfrombeingdefeated,oronepersoncanbeatanentireteamwithonecall.
General Rules Teamstaketurnstohideandguess.Eachplayeronthehidingteamwilltakethetokenandwithbothhandshidden,placethetokeninonehandortheother.Presentingthehands,withoutrevealingthetokenfortheotherteamtosee,the

playerattemptstodeceivetheplayerfromtheoppositeteam(knownasthe“shooter”)withelaborategesturesofthehands,arms,headandupperbody.Thismovementtakesplacewithallplayersononeteamatthesametime.Theoppositeplayer(shooter),bya(hand)signal,guessesthehandcontainingthetoken.Thesecondteamthenrepeatsthemotionsofhidingatokenforthefirstteamtoguess.Teamsmayswitchtheirplayers(shooter)oppositeothersduringthecourseofthegameistheychoose.Officialsmustbeabletoseeallcompetitors’handsclearly.ParticipantswithlonghairshouldhaveittiedbackwhenplayinghandgamessotheofficialsviewisnotobstructedAttheTraditionalGamesChampionships,teamswillbeplacedintoarandomizeddoubleeliminationbracketsystem.ThecompetitionwillbeginonDay1,andcontinueuntilthetop4teamsareidentified.Teamswillonlycompeteusing8sticksuntilthesemi-finals.OnDay2,whenthetop4teamscompeteinthefinals,10stickswillbeused.Fourhandsignalswillbeencouragedduringthehandgamescompetitiontosimplifyitforthebeginners;right,left,insideandoutsidehandsignals.Theofficialswillteachtheathletesthesesignalsbeforetheybegintheirmatch.

Whenonegameends,thenextgamewillcommencewithin5minutestoensurethatthecompetitionrunsatanefficientpace.Ifateamfailstoshowupintimeforthestartoftheirgame,theywillbeforcedtoforfeit.Teamsareresponsibleforkeepinganeyeonthecompetitionandschedule,andareresponsibleforensuringthatallteammembersarepresentforthestartoftheirnextgame.

Snow Snake History TheSnowSnakegameoriginatesfromthrowingaspearalongthesurfaceofthesnowwhilecaribouhunting.Thisgamewasusedasatoolforharvestingcaribouduringatimewhentherewerenoguns.Thesnowsnakeskillwasusedtohuntcaribouonfrozenlakes.Thehunterswouldslidethesnowsnakeontheicefromafartoplungeitintothebodyofasleepingcariboulyingdownontheiceorsnow.Denehunterswouldpracticetheirthrowingtechniqueswiththespear-orasitiscalledtoday–thesnowsnake.Traditionally,thespearhadahookatthetip,locatedonthetopsideofthespearwhilethebottompartofthespearwasshavedandflattenedout.Thisallowedthesharppiecetostayonthetopendandpreventthestickfromrotating.Thesharppiecewouldpuncturethecaribouandleaveabloodtrailforthehunters.
General Rules Thecompetitormaybestandingormaychoosetoruntothethrowline.Usingonehand,theteamplayerutilizesanunderhanddelivery(belowthehip)andthrowsthe

spearalongthesurfaceofthesnowsnaketrack.Theobjectistomakethespearslideoverthesnowasfaraspossible.Eachplayerhasthree(3)attempts.Onepracticethrowperplayerisallowedbeforethecompetitionbegins.Allthree(3)attemptswilloccuroneaftertheother(i.e.player1throwsthreetimesinarow,player2throwsthreetimesinarow,etc.)Thedistancethespeartravelsfromthethrowinglinetothetipofthespear,withthelongestdistancebeingthewinneroratthepointthatthespearexitsthesnowsnaketrack.Ifspearexitsthetrack,thenthatiswherethedistanceismeasured.Thespearmayleaveandre-enterthetrackduringitsslide;ifthesnakeshouldreenterthetrackthenthesnakewillbemeasuredwhereeveritlands.

Pole Push History Camplifeplacedgreatdemandsonpeople,everyoneneedingtobestrongandabletoworkforlongperiodsoftimewithouttiring.Duringthesummer,Denepeoplewereoftenonthemovecarryingwiththemcampequipmentandsupplies.Canoesneededtobeloadedandunloadedandcampssetupandtakendown.Travelingbycanoeinvolvedmanyportages,fromveryshorttoverylong,allrequiringthestrengthandendurancetogetthecanoes,equipmentandsuppliesovertothenextbodyofwater.Therewasnotimeofyearthatpeoplecouldlettheirstrengthandendurancediminish.Awintergamethatcanbeplayedinallseasons,PolePushwasplayedtoincreaseandmaintainstrengthandendurance.Whileitwasprimarilyagameplayedbymen,womenwerewelcometoplayaswell,showingrecognitionthatthestrengthofallpeopleareimportanttothewholegroup.
General Rules Eachteamoffour(4)players*graspsoppositeendsofthepole,withthecentermarkofthepolepositionedoverthecenterpointofthemarkedcircle.

PlayerSelection*Polepushonlyrequires4outofthe8playersfromeachteam.Teamsmustselecttwomaleandtwofemaleathletesfromtheirteam.Theteamcanswitchoutplayersforeach‘push’buttheremustalwaysbetwomaleandtwofemaleathletes.Onthesignal,eachteampushesforwardonthepoleattemptingtopushtheotherteamoutofthemarkedring.Thepoleistobeheldnohigherthantheshoulderandnolowerthanthehip.Bothteamsarenotallowedtocrossthecentrelineduringthecompetition.Ifaplayerisgettingclosetothecentreline,theymayletgoofthepoleandrepositionedthemselvesinamoreadequateposition.Competition Format Thecompetitionconsistsofabestofthree(3)“pushes”.AttheTraditionalGamesChampionships,teamswillbeplacedintoarandomizeddoubleeliminationbracketsystem.Thecompetitionwillcontinueuntilthewinningteamisidentified.

Stick Pull History Inthespring,withriversre-openingandwaterbeginningtoflow,Denefamilieswouldusegapscarvedintheicebythecurrenttofishwiththeirbarehands.Thegreatestchallengewasgraspingthefishandthrowingthemontotheiceandsnow.StickPullwascreatedtopracticethattechnique.Italsohelpedtopullfishfromnetsmoreproficiently.Throughoutthewinter,eitherinsideoroutside,playingStickPullhelpedwiththeindividual’soverallstrength,gripstrength,andpullingtechnique.Thepullingtechniqueisimportantbecauseitisusedforgrippingslipperyfishandpullingthemoutofthewater.Thetechniquemustbehardenoughtoholdthefish,butnotsohardastosqueezeitoutofone’sgrip.Theactionalsohastobequickandsmoothtobringsuccess.Stickpullprovidedachallengingandfunwaytodevelopandmaintainaskillthatcontributedtofamilysurvival.

Thecompetitionconsistsofabestofthree(3)“pulls”.Thefirst“pull”istherighthands,thesecond“pull”withthelefthandsandthethird“pull”,ifnecessary,isdeterminedbytheflipofacoin.Thewinnerofthefirstpullcallsthecointoss.Thewinnerofa“pull”isdeclaredwhenthestickispulledfromthehandoftheopponentorifoneoftheplayerspullsthesticktothesideoftheirbody,behindtheirhip,andholdsinfor8secondswhiletheiropponentisstillgrippingontoit,theyaredeclaredthewinner.AttheTraditionalGamesChampionships,participantswillcompeteinarandomizedbracketsystemagainstothermembersintheirgroup.Thebracketsystemusedwillbeadoubleeliminationformat.Oncethetop4athletesfromeachgroupareidentified,theywillberandomlyplacedintoaTOP8singleeliminationbrackettoidentifytheoverallwinneroftheevent.

Scoring TheTGCisscoredcollectively,meaningthatpointsearnedaredonesoasateam,notindividually.Teampointsarecalculatedbycombiningallindividualscorestorepresentacumulativeteamtotal,whicharethenrankedfrom1stto7thplace.Theteamwhoplaces1stinaneventwillreceive7points,theteamwhoplaces2ndwillreceive6points,theteamthatplacesthirdwillreceive5points,andsoon.Teamsthatdonotplaceinthetop7willnotreceiveanypointsforthatevent.Cumulative/Collectivescoresaretalliedinthefollowingevents:
