IntroductionThings that we should know

about the Academic Costume Everybody knows that the education, was very influenced by the religion. In

the Middle Ages, the teachers were the priests. Because of that, the student´s

costume is black and similar to the religious clothes(Cassock).

The first photo of Women´s Academic costume emerged in Porto (1923).We can see in that photo,three girls, students of the Arts University, wearing black skirt and jacket.

The costume has a special and important symbology: represents equalize between all the students ( the rich and the poor).

The students of university like to put prints in their cloaks. They use prints of their country, city, course

andschool.

Coimbra’s Academic Costumes

For Men:Black boots or shoes and black socks.

Black trousers.Black waistcoat.

Cassock White shirt.Black tie.

Black jacket.

For Woman:Black boots or shoes

Black tightsBlack skirt and jacket.

Black waistcoat (optional)White shirt.Black tie.

Students are forbidden of wearing gloves, scarfs, long boots and umbrella…They can’t use any

accessories (like ear-rings, piercings…).
