T4SD FORUM 2017 3

The Trade for Sustainable Development Forum brings together business people, researchers, standards organizations and international trade officials to discuss trends in sustainable value chains and voluntary sustainability standards.

Organized by the International Trade Centre (ITC), this year’s event explores the theme of partnerships:

• Why are some models more successful in achieving sustainability objectives? • What are common elements of success when standards organizations, policy makers and private companies work well together? • What can we expect from successful collaboration?• What issues should we consider when engaging in new partnerships?

Sustainable, Together

In today’s world, no one can ‘go it alone’. With a complex sustainability landscape, businesses, NGOs, governments and producers realize that partnering with each other is key to achieving sustainability outcomes in global value chains.

ITC’s Trade for Sustainable Programme (T4SD) is built on partnership principles. Whether through its project with the multi-company Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform – the web-based Farm Sustainability Assessment platform – or the multi-stakeholder Chocothon initiative, its partnerships create market opportunities and facilitate systemic change. The public sector is also engaging in new partnerships, such as through sustainable public procurement or consumer information programmes.

Shared understanding of partnership models can promote approaches that really work. Neutral brokers enhance transparency, or facilitate action where collaboration is not always easy.

Out of the Box: Innovative Partnerships for Inclusive Trade

How to create global partnerships for ‘good trade’? Truly effective collaboration is like a black box: examples are scarce, outcomes are uncertain and barriers have not yet been broken down. Sustainability is however high on today’s agenda, and the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs) offer a platform for future partnerships among the multitude of actors in international trade as a vehicle for sustainable and inclusive economic development. The Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the International Trade Centre (ITC) bring together leaders on sustainability issues around one table to propose partnership actions for sustainable and inclusive trade.

T4SD FORUM 2017 9

MINI HACKATHONPartnerships for sustainable development

In its 4th edition of the T4SD Forum, ITC has placed innovation at the centre of all discussions, identifying and exploring best lessons of partnerships: what works or does not work, how innovative approaches have transformed the way companies, NGOs, policy-makers are collaborating and developing new partnerships.

The Mini-Hackathon is a first of its kind interactive and dynamic session where 4 mentors will drive extensive brainstorming around several themes to address the challenge of creating transparent supply chains. Consumers, governments, and

companies are demanding details about the systems and sources that deliver the goods. Transparency in supply chains drives impact, improves resiliency in the face of disruptions and encourages innovation as new needs are identified in different regions. This requires a strong technology platform, alignment on data structures, access and benefits to all players. These in turn build strong relationships between partners and in financial performance – ensuring the long term economic viability of social and environmentally sustainable supply chains.

How: Using technology for information flow and access from producers to consumers

Main challenges: access and level playing field- benefits to all (links to #3)

Mentor: Dan Gyinaye Poku, Hovver

• Equitable access & opportunity to the technology (pre-competitive approach).

• Barriers to access to technology for supply chain actors in developing countries.

• Who decides what technology is available and implemented? • Ensuring maximum confidentiality and neutrality in the

process of information flow.

Companies share data to streamline processes, gain or maintain business relations and to achieve sustainability commitments.

How: Transparency in supply chains using common definitions of sustainability – collaboration between supply chain partners and enabling trust

Main challenges: trust, legal and ethical considerations

Mentor: Leontien Hasselman-Plugge, SIM Supply Chain Information Management

• Data privacy: Ownership or trustworthiness of data? • Data management: Master supply chain definitions• Data confidentiality: Data beyond the first tier

The necessary step to achieve positive impacts.

How: Transparency to drive inclusive supply chains

Main challenges: systemic (tenure, illiteracy), lack of access to inputs and infrastructure and relevant data

Mentor: Gabriela Alvarez, Colcocoa

• How can transparency and information work to support smallholders?

• What are the keys to empower producers to achieve positive impacts?

• How do young people and ‘rural-millennials’ understand transparency and use of information?

How: Transparency on sustainability market data to promote achievement of sustainability commitments among companies, identify gaps and opportunities.

Main challenges: requires a strong technology platform (linked to #1), aligned data structures (#2)

Mentor: Julia Lernoud, FiBL

• Multiple certification (how to collect the data? how to handle it? Potential approaches for when not all data is available)

• Lack of common reporting systems – #2 indicators, consistency, data gaps, etc.

• Significant gaps in supply chain data - Retail sales and international trade statistics do not match or not even available.

• Data management (quality checks)

Participants to the T4SD Forum will be kindly asked to join one of the 4 groups, and brainstorm about innovative models and solutions related to the challenge and its impacts on

partnerships. After 45 minutes of brainstorming, mentors will report back the findings to the plenary and online voting be made to identify the best models and ideas shared by the participants.
