HEAD COACH

After leading the Golden Eagle cross country and track and field teams to some quality performances in 2014-15, Tina Fernandes returns for her third season as Cal State L.A.’s head coach for women’s cross country, women’s indoor track and field and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Fernandes led the cross country team to an eighth-place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and a 20th-place finish in the NCAA Division II West Region. She then led the men’s track and field team to a fifth-place finish in the CCAA in the spring, which was an improvement by one position from the previous year and the women’s team to an eighth-place finish. The year was highlighted by a second straight All-American award in the men’s 100 meters by Gregory Veals, who was also named the CCAA Male Track Athlete of the Year for a third straight season after capturing conference championships in the 100 and 200 meters. In her first year with the program, Fernandes guided the cross country team to a fifth-place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, which was an improvement by one spot

from 2012 to start the year. She then led the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams to sixth-place finishes in the conference despite several key injuries and small rosters. The women’s team also improved one position from its 2012 finish. The year was highlighted by an All-American award in the men’s 100 meters for Veals, who was also named the CCAA Male Track Athlete of the Year. In Fernandes’ first two years, the Golden Eagles have picked up 13 All-CCAA awards, five individual CCAA championships and 19 All-West Region awards in cross country, women’s indoor track and field and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Cal State L.A. has had a total of nine national qualifiers in men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Fernandes joined Cal State L.A. after spending 14 years as the women’s sprint assistant coach at USC. Fernandes was also the Olympic coach representing Puerto Rico at the 2012 London Games and she was the coach and team leader for Puerto Rico at the 2008 Beijing Games. During her career at USC working with legendary coach Ron Allice, Fernandes coached 67 College Division I All-Americans, 11 individual NCAA champions, 56 Pacific-12 Conference champions and 179 All-Conference student-athletes. She also coached USC record-holders in the 100 meters, 200, 400, 4x100 and 4x200. Two of her student-athletes also set Pacific-12 Conference records. Under her guidance, the USC sprint team was considered one of the best in the country and she was named the West Region Sprints Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in 2005 and 2007. She was also recognized by USC with one of 12 Remarkable Women Awards in 2011. Those awards honored accomplishments and contributions to campus life by faculty, staff or students. Fernandes was also chosen by the U.S. Olympic Committee for its Mentoring Women in Sports program in 2006. Among the runners she coached at USC was Angela Williams, who won an unprecedented four consecutive NCAA Division I 100-meter titles and also captured the prestigious Honda/Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female collegiate athlete in 2002. USC’s 2013 4x400 relay team of Coco Ndipagbor, Vanessa Jones, Jenna Puterbaugh and Ashley Liverpool won the Pac-12 championship and Fernandes led USC’s 2013 4x100 relay team to a seventh-place national finish and another All-America award. The Trojans also had 4x100 relay teams earn All-America recognition in 2012 and 2011. The 2011 team won the Pac-10 championship and posted the fourth-fastest time in the program’s history. Sprinter Jessica Davis won the conference title in the 200 meters and set a new record in that event for USC freshmen. Aareon Payne and Davis both earned All-America honors in the 200. She had a pair of runners, Jessica Onyepunuka in the 100 and Carol Rodriguez in the 400, earn All-America honors in 2008 and that same pair won 2008 West Regional titles while helping USC to a third-place finish. In 2007, Rodriguez and Onyepunuka went 1-2 in both the 100 and 200 at the conference championships and the NCAA West Regional. Both earned All-America honors and teamed up with Shalina Clarke and Candice Davis to place third in nationals in the 4x100 relay. In 2006, Rodriguez was third at nationals in the 100 and fourth in the 200 while the 4x100 relay team of Virginia Powell, Davis, Onyepunuka and Rodriguez finished third in the nation in the 4x100 and set a new school record of 42.96. Powell won three straight Pac-10 championships in the 100 (2004-06) and Rodriguez made it four straight for USC in 2007. In 2003, Miya Edmonson won the NCAA West Region 200 title. The 2002 season was a memorable one because Williams won her fourth consecutive 100-meter title, Natasha Mayers became the first USC female runner to win the 200 title and was second to Williams in the 100. The 4x100 team finished third in the nation and five USC sprinters made the final of the Pac-10 100. In 2001, Williams won her third 100 title and Kinshasa Davis took third in the 200 at nationals while the 4x100 team was second. In 2000, the 4x100 relay team went undefeated on the season and won the NCAA title with a then-school record time of 43.14. Williams won her second 100 title and Davis was second in the 200. Before joining USC, Fernandes was a head girls cross country and track and field coach for the Compton Unified School District from 1993-97 and developed eight league champions. A fine sprinter herself in college, Fernandes competed for Long Beach City College and Fresno State. She earned her Master’s degree in Education and a teaching credential in Physical Education. She is married to Sean Fernandes and the couple has two children: Twin Fernandes and T’Icis Fernandes.

A total of 23 Cal State L.A. track and field athletes, representing 10 nations, have qualified for the Olympics in 52 total events, capturing 15 medals (six gold, eight silver, one bronze).

Jesse Owens Track in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex is home to the Cal State L.A. soccer and track and field teams. With permanent bleacher seating for 5,000 spectators, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, including the University’s commencement ceremony each June.

In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was selected as one of six sites to construct a world-class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982.

The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment.

The track was officially dedicated on May 22, 1983, during the L.A. Regional Championships of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games.
