About Me

Mrs. Kortum► Professional Experience:

• Bachelor of Arts, University of California, Santa Barbara

• Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, California State Teach, CSU Fullerton

• 2nd Grade• 4th Grade

Goals for the Year

1. Have every student reach or exceed Common Core State and District standards.

2. Provide a fun-filled learning environment where children thrive.

3. Increase each child’s academic success in all subject areas.

4. Develop student’s sense of responsibility.

Expectations►Get a good night's rest and eat a healthy breakfast.

►Students come to school by 7:50 and are with the teacher at 8:00 PREPARED TO LEARN.

►Make illness the only excuse for absences.

►Absent work will be given on the day the student returns. It must be returned by the given due date.

►Complete classwork and homework assignments on time.

►Read 20 minutes every day in addition to regularly assigned homework.

►Memorize math facts to automaticity (study nightly).

Behavior Expectations► Please remind your student to follow school and

classroom rules. ► Rick Morris Behavior Clip Chart:

► Red: Outstanding- Demonstrates exemplary behavior all day.

► Orange: Great Day- Going above and beyond what is expected.

► Yellow: Good Day- Going a little beyond what is expected.

► Green: Ready to Learn- Doing what they are supposed to do.

► Blue: Think About It- A reminder to redirect behavior.

► Purple: Teacher’s Choice- Discussion with teacher and a missed recess.

► Pink: Parent Contact- A phone call home, email, or notification on daily behavior calendar.

Incident Logs► Incident Logs are used for OUTSIDE minor playground

offenses.► Examples: running before, during, or after school, pushing, playing after bell, using

bathroom after the bell …

► Parent signature REQUIRED► Grades 1-6

► Incident Logs will warrant the following consequences (per trimester):► 1st: Warning► 2nd: Loss of a recess and citizenship grade on the report card

lowered one level► 3rd: Office referral for 1 lunch detention► 4th: Parent/Student/Teacher Conference with an Administrator

Curriculum & Grading ► All grades are a combination of class work, tests, quizzes, class

participation, homework, and/or teacher observation.

► The school district adopted a Standards Based Grading Report

Card, resulting in students receiving the grades of 1, 2, 3, and 4.

► The second-grade curriculum is based on Common Core State

Standards for Language Arts, Writing and Math, and state

standards for Science and Social Studies.

Grading ScaleGrade/Number Meaning

4- Excelling

Students at the excelling level of performance are consistently performing at grade level, can demonstrate independence, and can extend the grade level standards, when applicable and expected at this point of the school year.

3- AchievingStudents at the achieving level of performance demonstrate an adequate understanding of and ability to apply skills needed to meet grade level standards at this point of the school year.

2- ProgressingStudents at the progressing level of performance are partially meeting the grade level standards expected at this point of the school year.

1- BeginningStudents at the Beginning/Standard Not Met level are not yet meeting grade level standards expected at this point of the school year.

Classwork

► It is important that each student completes his/her classwork. If classwork is not finished in the time allotted, the student may have to complete it at the during recess or at home. To ensure that students always do their best, they may be asked to do an assignment over.

Homework►

► Epic!/Book reading 20 minutes daily.► XtraMath(Math Facts) Daily for 10 minutes► Prodigy daily for 10 minutes.► Memorize addition, subtraction, and multiplication

facts!

Absences►Please make sure your child is in school unless ill. ATTENDANCE

COUNTS! Please try to schedule appointments after school. If you are

taking your child out of school, please let me know ASAP. Work missed will

need to be completed.

►Missed tests will be given the next day the student returns or when time

permits.

►TARDIES do count against perfect attendance!

Birthdays ☺

► Birthdays’ will be celebrated in class with a birthday song and dance. ► Parents are asked not to bring any treats to school.

► Cupcakes, cake, candy, gift bags, and other items are NOT ALLOWED.

► Birthday invitations can only be given out before/after school off campus. No invitations will be passed out in the classroom.

Remind Code

Cell Phones & Other Electronics

o Off and away while on campus.o Outside gates before & after school.

o Students use office phone to contact family members if they have an emergency.

o Parents contact the office to reach your child.

Dress Code

o Leggings cannot be see through.o Modest tank tops and sleeveless shirts are allowed with a

minimum of 2-inch shoulder straps (No tube tops or halter tops that show undergarments).

o No low-cut tops or bare midriffs.o Shirts need to cover lower back and stomach.o Shorts and skirts must be 4 inches inseam.

o Dress Code Citations:1) Warning/Change of clothes 2) 30 min after school

detention 3) 1 hour after school detention 4) 2 hour after school detention and parent/student conference.
